samosasParticipantI got slammed by more than a few people I talked to for pointing out that Tom Crean hasn’t passed the sweet sixteen with someone on his bench named Dwyane Wade. Well, I think it’s safe to say that he didn’t prepare his team for the zone and his two best players looked like chumps tonight. Look for IU to struggle to make .500 next season.

DlesnieParticipantNot with Noah Vonleh, they’ll make the tournament at least. I can’t say on success past that but I’d be willing to bet they make the tourney.

JoeWolf1He may not have a history of winning deep into the tournament on a consistant basis, but don’t get too crazy with the hate. Indiana will be well over 500 next year. Crean has a long history of turning programs around, and that is exactly what he’s done in Indiana.
He’s bringing in the afformentioned Noah Vonleh ( the #8 player in the country ) 3 more 4 stars and 2 three star recruits. Not to mention the return of Yogi Ferrell and Will Sheehey and some other role players. No they won’t be a #1 seed, next year, but don’t get crazy Crean turned that program around and he’s not going to drop below a 500 team because he lost in the Sweet 16. They’ll win probably 22 or 23 games next year, in a very hard conference, and be back again with another good recruiting class in 2014. Crean hasn’t even been there long enough to have recruited his entire team!!! Don’t throw him under the bus going forward or negate what he does year in and year out, especially turning programs around.

samosasParticipantGranted, I haven’t seen any of Vonleh so I can’t attest to how good he’s going to be, but I just don’t see that Tom Crean is all that good of a coach. Good, yes, but he’s not upper echelon. In 14 years as a head coach he’s been past the Sweet Sixteen once. Take the name away and look at that alone and ask yourself “does a coach who has a winning percent slightly above 60, and has been past the sweet sixteen once in 14 years deserve 3 mil +/season?”

i’m jus so offendedParticipantHe makes no in game adjustments, makes way too many and stupid substitutions and makes weird match up decisions on defense. I would have put Oladipo on MCW. That zone is really dirty but it seemed like Indiana was surprised that that was the defense Cuse played.

samosasParticipantFinally someone that sees the light! Yogi Ferrell had sucked all season and in the second half of the most important game to date you don’t start him after half time? Wha? At that point you’re pot committed and you let him play for the continuity of the team. I think the hallmark of a coach who on the inside is about to crap his pants is when they make bizarre substitutions. Classic example of over thinking it. MCW scores 24 and you don’t play one of the best defenders on the wing in basketball on him? Get real. Crean got out-coached and Boeheim didn’t even try. Funny story about Boeheim, I went to school with this nephew. Kid said that every year Uncle Jim would give him a pair of shoes that didn’t fit that just so happened to be the same kind that the team wore. Dude’s a millionaire and he can’t even buy a kid a Christmas gift..smh. Kid was like 13 and he gave him a size 14 shoe.

IndianaBasketballParticipantTom Crean didn’t put his players in the best position to succeed last night. He was out-coached so bad, he’ll have nightmares about it until next year’s tournament. Very disappointing. The way IU played, they acted like they’d never seen a damn zone before. I can’t stand that pansy ass zone, but it’s effective towards a team who shows they can’t play against it. You can’t just dribble around doing dribble handoffs.
Crean rebuilt the program and now the top players in Indiana actually want to come, but he has to improve as a coach. He’s a great recruiter, but just a good coach.

samosasParticipant@IndianaBasketball What are realistic expectations for Indiana next year you think? I don’t think Indiana will ever fire him, much in the same vein as Bob Knight, but I have no reservations of saying that as a coach, I think Crean is a Kevin Stallings with better recruiting and a deep tourney run with him at the helm will be difficult (based on his one time getting past the sweet sixteen in 14 years as a head coach at D1 schools).

Recruiting is an interesting thing. Kentucky is getting 4 or 5 of the top guys every year now, UNC and Duke are still getting their guys, Michigan is back, and even Memphis is having some very good recruiting classes again.
Tom Crean better be careful or he will get squeezed out. He is not a good enough coach, for him to be a better than average recruiter instead of a GREAT recruiter like John Calipari.
If you were to compare John Calipari the Great (Recruiter) with some other above average recruiters and the NBA Draft, Coach Cal is getting 4 lottery picks while the other guys are getting four second round picks.
Tom Crean and IU also has to worry about Ohio State which seems to get high quality players every year, Michigan State which does the same, and also Butler who has a GREAT coach in a rising program that is going to the new Big East next year.
Louisville is recruiting from the same area too.
So Indiana isn’t guaranteed Final Four-type talent every year coming in. Sweet Sixteen type talent will probably be the rule rather than the exception. And I am not sure that Crean has the coaching chops to take that kind of talent to the Final Four.
