BenchWarmerParticipantKinda offtopic: What is your “go-to” move? Also your strengths as a player? (So we can see your playstyle)
I am a passfirst, defensive minded pointguard. 5’6 but really athletic (don’t I have to be). I look to get my team involved and score mine when I can. I find cracks in the D and attack either finish or dish off.
Why I bring this up is because I was playing a pickup game with a few friends of mine (2on2) games to 11 win by two, everything is one point. The three other guys are all within the 5’11-6’4 range, but I manage to use this to my advantage. My team is down 11-10, we need a basket, so I go to the move without even thinking about it. I beat my man off the dribble attack the basket notice my buddy who is 6’4 coming for weakside help, my man slips down onto my teammate (standard rotation D). I am taking it to the basket then I stop, fake, he jumps, pivot, basket. We end up losing.
That move is the move I goto quite a bit without even thinking. I know that when when a big guy sees a guy that is 5’6 inshoes attacking he wants to block him, so 9/10 he jumps when you fake it. So that’s where my move comes in, makes my height disadvantage an advantage.
What’s your move?

HaleParticipantMy go-to move is the one Rondo does where it looks like he’s going for a layup then he’ll quick pivot and spin the other way for the wide open shot.

MalcolmxParticipantIn and out dribble then crossover. If the guy doesn’t bite for it, I do something called a tap dribble.I just want a dude to shift a little so I can get in the lane.

JoeWolf1Fade away on the low block while posting, quick dribble and step back while facing up.

Beard13ParticipantAll my moves are all basic. I’d say a step back shot. I don’t try to over-complicate the game

SubZeroParticipantMine’s probably jab right, one dribble to the left and pullup. That or a hesitation cross
0 - Posted on: Fri, 03/01/2013 - 9:17am #751754

Mad MaxParticipantI like using the super kick, sleeper hold, dropkick….
0 - Posted on: Fri, 03/01/2013 - 9:17am #751755

IndianaBasketballParticipantI have a couple…
From a standstill position… Jab/ball fake right (a couple of times to set it up) and then quick ball fake left, then explode back going right. I stole this move from Chris Thomas (Pike High School and Notre Dame) after he did it to me. You can either use this move to pull up for the J or just go to the rim. You can use this move to set up a bunch of other moves.
Another move I love to do, I stole from Jason Gardner (North Central High School and Arizona). You drive hard going baseline and you stop and take it around your back, but as soon as you catch it, you take it through your legs and explode going forward again.
Other than that, I’m all about step backs. I step back driving to the left better than going to the right though. Never been too comfortable stepping back after driving right for some reason.
0- Posted on: Fri, 03/01/2013 - 9:34am #751758

HaleParticipantAre you right-handed? I am and I have the same issue with step-backs, it’s much more comfortable doing it while going left.
0- Posted on: Fri, 03/01/2013 - 9:45am #751761

IndianaBasketballParticipantYep, I’m right handed. I do almost everything better going left for some reason. It took me forever to get comfortable even jumping off of my right foot. I couldn’t dunk off of my right foot until like senior year. I’d either jump off of my left foot or two feet.
0- Posted on: Fri, 03/01/2013 - 9:49am #751764

HaleParticipantThat’s 100% how I am, minus the dunking off the right foot part.

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantSame here, I find it very difficult to step back to the right although I’m right handed.
If I dribble to the right, I’m driving. If I dribble to the left, I’m either pulling up or stepping back.
0- Posted on: Fri, 03/01/2013 - 10:44am #751776

IndianaBasketballParticipantI can step into my shot and pull up going right, but I can’t step back… It just doesn’t feel right.
IF I drive right, I’m either shooting off of the one or two dribble pull up, stopping short of the rim and shooting like a one handed runner/floater or I’m going all of the way to the rim.

Chilbert arenasParticipantUp and under, old man game all day, play smart not hard
Also I love driving on the right baseline and finishing with a left hand reverse, Í’m right handed but finish with better english with my left and I can still hang in the air long enough0 - Posted on: Fri, 03/01/2013 - 9:59am #751766
Stevenmy entire game is based off of moves which can either really help or hurt a team. teammates dont mind when i do it though cause normally i get them open for easy llooks even if i do over dribble. anyways, a couple of you already said some of my moves. such as the in and out then cross over, that one probably works the most. then i use the rondo show the ball, pivot spin layup.
but the 2 others i like to use is the steve smith act like your about the bring the ball back out then explode the original way you were going.
and the other is the d wade move where you get your man covering you tight and drive to the hoop hard, and then cross back inbetween your legs, the defender will go flying.0 - Posted on: Fri, 03/01/2013 - 10:14am #751768

David Stern a.k.a. da muthaf@cking leader of da kryptsParticipantProbably a crossover to the left and then a step back jumper. I’m a 5’11 150 pound white kid who is supposed to be in his peak athletically yet has a 25 inch vertical. Add to that a fear of jumping around under the rim because of the 1789542 ankle injuries I’ve had and a jumpshot becomes my only option. I just pu$$y out going to the rim whenever there are any people in front of it.

GronounoursParticipantI think the time has come to reveal the deadly, unstoppable, and yet very easy move my congregation created in the 16th century. It works each time, but cannot be learned by watching it; you have to be told how to do it.
I must warn you: I’m not allowed to do this. I’m telling you because my congregation kind of let me down; but that’s not the point. Get ready.
So you have to start dribbling with… what? Nooooo!!!! How did you find me? Please… no, not my arm!!!!!! Aarrrgh!!!!!! Please!!!!!! Not my MJ poster!!!! Take my mom, but not my MJ poster!!!! I was just joking, I wasn’t going to… ouch…. arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

NbanflguyParticipant30 foot 3’s. I am like a better shooter the farther away from the basket I get.
I also pump fake like 70% of the time which I guess is a move.0- Posted on: Fri, 03/01/2013 - 11:06am #751781
BenchWarmerParticipantI have the same problem with shooting. I find its because as I get further out I use more legs which creates more arc.

BenchWarmerParticipantI’m really a guru around the basket. In pickup games I always post up on guys 6’2-6’4 and routinely score. It sounds ridiculous since I’m 5’6 but my footwork amd elevation are both really good. Its really windy where I live so I always had to play close to the basket so the wind wouldn’t blow my shot away hah but its really helped because I can finish really well with both hands. I used to watch Hakeem then just go practice and have fun with fakes and counters on both sides of the basket. In games. I don’t backdown players but I really use fakes and counters on drives.
Spin move into a between the legs stepback is another move I use that’s effective.0 - Posted on: Fri, 03/01/2013 - 2:11pm #751802

King CaluchaParticipantI’m a 5’9” point forward LOL… I know it’s funny, but I don’t usually guard the ball handler… most times I guard someone taller and go for the rebound. I’m not athletic at all, but I play tough D. I also play soccer and I’m also a playmaker in that sport. Setting easy goals/baskets for my teammates is what I really enjoy.
I usually operate off screens and if the dish is not available, I go for the mid range pull up J or runner. Also, the other day I found out my step back J could be decent in 1-vs-1 situations (I wish I knew about this move when I was a teenager lol)

teropParticipantIn my younger days when I was a rail thin semi-athletic 6’1 pg I used that Iverson crossover and Penny hesitation all day everyday…after college and after tearing my achilles and picking up softball old man weight my game consist of taking opposing big men out the paint and shooting 3’s lol
0 - Posted on: Fri, 03/01/2013 - 7:18pm #751877
aamir543ParticipantWell, I consider myself of the Reggie Evans and Kendrick Perkins mold, lol. But there was a time a couple years ago when I played in rec leagues where the competition wasn’t very good, I was the go to guy then. My go to move was usually any thing to create space or get open. I didn’t have very good handles but I could shoot from anywhere, so I’d get the ball around the top of the key, take two dribbles, then two big giant steps, and by that time I’m either at the rim and ready for a layup, a scoop shot, or I’ve been forced into fallaway shot on the baseline. It sounds and even looks ugly but It works. I also like putting my head down and just bulldozing through the paint, that’s fun, as well as a nice post turnaround, that’s probably my favorite move.

Sewok15ParticipantI played every position from PG to Center. I am only 5’10 but I was a lockdown defender and great rebounder for my size. When we were in the county semifinals I blocked 2 shots off the backboard and the radio announcers said I played like I was 6’5. It is funny because growing up I played a lot more than everybody in my class so I was the best player and scorer and as the years went on I became more of a role player who did the little things because the other players on my team all became more efficient scorers than I was. I started varsity as a sophomore and junior but I actually came off the bench as a senior for the good of the team (and because I was ineligible because I didn’t know the first quarter grades would prevent me from missing the first 2 weeks of practice. . We went from having no seniors on my team when I was in 10th grade and going 4-18 to going 22-5 my senior year in 2005 and getting to the county title game and losing to the biggest school in the state of PA, Reading High alma mater of Donyell Marshall and Stu Jackson.
Offensively my go to move was a quick and simple behind the back dribble. I would usually do it right to left after giving a head and hesitation fake right. In 9th grade when I played JV I dropped a kid one time using the move…I proceeded to bank in a straight on jumper so it wasn’t the sweetest finish ever but I had the crowd oohhhing and ahhhhing. I could always handle the ball with the best of them but my shot is a bit wonky.

machu46ParticipantI’m a 5’10” PG. I’m fast, but I can’t jump very well, but I’ve always had great fundamentals. My old AAU coach said that I was fundamentally the best player he had ever seen (and he was a former college coach). Unfortunately, I never really had the right mentality when I was playing back in high school, and while I shot over 50% from 3 point range in my high school career, I never really put the rest of my game together so I ended up going to Syracuse as a student instead of playing college ball somewhere else. But, basically, I’m not really that quick, I’m skinny, and I don’t have that many moves, but I can throw passes exactly where I mean to almost every time, and as my 3 point percentage indicates, I’m a great shooter. I finally put it all together here and I’m honestly pretty positive that I could walk on to the team here at this point, but obviously I wouldn’t really play, and I just know that I’d be too frustrated by committing so much of my life to never really playing that I’d rather just focus on my grades and my career.
I have 3 go to moves really.
1. In and out into a crossover. If you sell this right, it can leave the defender wobbling all over the place.
2. A couple of crossovers into a hesitation and then a pullup 3. I have a really quick shot, so if I get the defender lowering his hands a little bit with my crossovers, I can get my shot off pretty easily.
3. Simple behind the back move. I do it where I have a little hop to the side as I go behind my back. I never really did it in high school, but here at Syracuse, I’ve made 4 or 5 people fall/caught them reaching in and beat them easily with this.0 - AuthorPosts
