BJennings91ParticipantMarcus Smart would be a terrible number uno pick IMO. A great teammate and floor-leader, but really can’t see him being a franchise talent PG, especially in this day n age.

Ghost01ParticipantI like the idea and appreciate the commentary, but some of it just off. Marcus Smart would be a bad 1st pick, he really has no D Rose in his game and is much closer to Evans. There’s also no way Trey Burke will be a CP3 calibur player.

treytalkssports.comParticipantWe can disagree on the analysis. This is a system. Hollinger released several explanations of this system, but i have adapted it quite a bit.
You can disagree with my analysis and scouting, and i appreciate the input about Burke and Smart. I disagree with you about them, but if it was an exact science, there would never be any value or bust picks.
I think Smart is a better point guard than Evans. He has the ability to drive left or right, pull-up, or shoot a floater. That is what reminds me of Rose (plus the elite athleticism, even if they are different athletically).
Why do you think Smart and Burke have lower potential than i have listed, and how good do you expect them to be?
0- Posted on: Sun, 02/17/2013 - 5:13pm #748589

Ghost01ParticipantI think Smart will be a decent NBA player. I just don’t see a star when I watch him play. I see a guy who will probably get drafted to a lottery team, put up solid numbers and really not make the team all that much better.
Burke is a nice college player but I just don’t see him being anymore than a bench/role player in the NBA. He is too small, and he has gotten shut down by some better defensive players/teams this year.

treytalkssports.comParticipantYou could be right about Smart, but my gut says he has bigger upside.
http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/player/gamelog/_/id/56670/trey-burke
I guess i really don’t see any big games that Burke got shut down. In fact, against the bigger competition it seems like he has played better.
I will be watching both players in their conference tourney and march madness. We will see if they show up big and help their team wins, or disappear.

treytalkssports.comParticipantI guess other than Noel, Muhammad, and McLemore, i think Smart and Burke have more potential than anyone.

Lebron’s HairlineParticipantWow these comparisons, the last tier had pretty reasonable ones but Noel to KG and Smart to DRose?

treytalkssports.comParticipant(you have the best name ever)
What do you think would be better comparisons?

Lebron’s HairlineParticipantHaha thanks I think smart favors more to James harden, Noel is a Larry sanders/Joakim Noah. I like the format and the ideas

treytalkssports.comParticipantThanks man. It is still a work in progress.
I thought about the Harden comparison and they do play similarly, but Smart is not nearly as efficient as Harden. That is why i didn’t list him as comparable to Harden. I don’t like to do comparisons with adjectives (ie Inefficient Harden).
I can see the Sanders/Noah comparison for Noel, but i think he is already that good (with an ACL). I think he has higher potential with his athleticism. He is not robotic with his post moves, and looks smooth with the few moves that he does have. He is raw offensively, but i see the raw tools to be good, which is why i compare his ceiling to Garnett, even though that is probably too high of comparison.

usfballerParticipantHe reminds me Jrue Holiday. Jrue was a better passer coming into the league, but Smart has more offense at this point.
If forced to compare Trey Burke’s potential, I think of Jameer Nelson when he was helping Dwight and Hedo to the Finals. Not CP3 level, but borderline all star.0 - Posted on: Sun, 02/17/2013 - 8:04pm #748656

he_gets_bucketsParticipantmy only problem is ben mclemore, he certainly has enough upside and potential to be at least a tier 3 franchise. and the paul george comparison is quite horrid no offence. apart from that its a very concise and accurate list, though marcus smart being that high could be debatable, though each is entitled to their own opinion

treytalkssports.comParticipantI thought about moving McLemore up a tier, but Franchise Tier three is for really high risk, high reward franchise players (Andre Drummond, Demarcus Cousins, Kwame Brown, etc.), who could be huge busts but could be dominate players. It is actually a compliment to McLemore not to have him in that tier, because that means i think that he will be an impact player and starter from day one, and might become an Allstar one day.
I still have doubts that McLemore could be a Franchise player. I can see him being an Allstar, but i don’t see him making an All-NBA team. That is why i put him in that tier.
Who would you compare McLemore to? He is not a great shooter like Allen, and he is not a great slasher like Wade. He is good at a lot of things, but not great at anything (other than athleticism). He is a good defender, and has potential to get better there. George has played shooting guard for the first two years of his career, and i thought his playing style was the most similar to McLemore.

ncballerI love the site and the idea, but man of this evaluation needs some tweeking. Burke does not have the upside of Chris Paul and does not have a floor of Ty Lawson. I would be shocked if he even reached Lawson’s level.
I do like the McAdoo comparisons although I think somewhere between Lee and Gibson is likely his upside.
Derrick Rose is a once in a decade type talent and Marcus Smart is not close to his level and will likely never be.

TurnipParticipantI’m going to keep posting this comment every time I see your draft tiers.
How is Smart different than Dominique Jones (other than that DoJo could finish when he was in college)?
0- Posted on: Mon, 02/18/2013 - 2:36pm #748791
treytalkssports.comParticipantI agree with Lebron’s Hairline (a statement i never thought i’d make). Smart is a better athlete, shot-creator, and defender (his most underrated ability) than Jones. I see your line of thought in your comparison, but i think even his floor is higher than Jones.
Just curious, which games have you seen Smart play in this year? Some games he has looked like a chucker, and if you saw those games then i can understand your doubts.

Lebron’s HairlineParticipantSmart is a true point and playmaker that takes good shots while Dominique jones was a chucker with no point skills at ll

TurnipParticipantA true point guard and playmaker (who is one of the worst turnover machines in college this year), who takes good shots (which he can’t hit to save his life).
