NCarmean18ParticipantThe Fighting Illini defeated Lewis 79-47 in an exhibition game Saturday night at the Assembly Hall. Illinois was on fire to start the game, jumping out to a 26-4 lead in less than 12 minutes. The Illini made six of their first eight 3-point attempts during the early spree, with six different players connecting from long range. The UI’s defense was equally as impressive, holding Lewis to 1-of-13 shooting. The Flyers settled down, however, outscoring the hosts 16-9 over the final eight-plus minutes of the half as the Illini took a 35-20 lead into intermission.
Illinois quickly pushed the lead back above 20 by opening the second half with six unanswered points. The margin stayed in the 20s for nearly the rest of the game before settling at 32 points.
The Illini shot nearly 51 percent for the game (29-57), and were exactly 50 percent from 3-point range (9-18). Lewis, meanwhile, shot less than 30 percent (15-51) on the night and managed just 3-of-16 from behind the arc. Illinois outscored the Flyers 30-to-18 in the paint and held a commanding 42-to-23 edge on the glass. The Illini forced 18 Lewis turnovers and converted them into 29 points.
Coach John Groce utilized everyone on the roster, as all 13 Illini logged minutes. Eleven of the players reached the scoring column, with three in double figures. D.J. Richardson led the Illini with 12 points. Myke Henry and Sam McLaurin, meanwhile, added 11 each. Brandon Paul tallied nine points along with five assists. And Tyler Griffey grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Illinois returns to the court for its final exhibition game on Nov. 4, facing West Chester (Pa.) at 3 p.m. at the Assembly Hall.

ProudGrandpaParticipantI will say that I like John Groce and Brandon Paul is among the Big ten’s best and I think the Illini should make the tournament (where they will get upset in the first round as they always do)

kobyzParticipantBrandon Paul is strong on the radar of many scouts, very rounded combo guard…

NCarmean18ParticipantI just post these forum threads so that people can have the opportunity to see how certain draft prospects did for Illinois, such as Brandon Paul, as you said. I’m pretty excited for college basketball, so I thought I’d just share some footage from an exhibition game and what not. I’m sorry it’s not a power house team from the Big Ten like Indiana or Ohio State, but I am loyal to my Illini, and I love hearing what other people think of them. That’s why I post these threads. Not because I find it impressive that we can defeat these slack teams lol.
Now, on to your second response, I really like Groce as well. He did nice things during his tenure as the head coach for the Ohio Bobcats, and I think he will blossom into an even better coach with some talent from the Big Ten Conference.
Brandon Paul is my favorite Illini player, but he is VERY inconsistant. Due to the lack of experience at the point guard position, he is forced to play there, whenever he is a natural 2-guard. I think he can develop point guard skills under this new Illini coaching staff a lot better than the past staff, and he will develop into a scoring point guard, instead of an under-sized, scoring 2-guard.

ChewyParticipantCan he recruit Chicago? Weber couldn’t and the Illini were average at best. Weber got Chicago kids, but not the top game changing Chicago talent like Sherron Collins, D Rose, Jon Sheyer, Julian Wright ect.
It’s looking like more of them same from Groce (He’s got Nunn, but will probably lose Jabari).
Can you imagine a team of J Parker, P White, Okafor, Hamilton, S Taylor, Nunn? Now that’s a team that can compete nationally.

illinimanmarkParticipantI think Groce can recruit Chicago. I think it was a steal to come in and grab a senior like Nunn after only a few months on the job. I don’t think he has "lost" Jabari. Bruce lost Jabari.

SiggyParticipantI hope Brandon Paul did some brain training and took some krill oil this summer. That kid needed a brain transplant. He went from hero in the OSU game to the goat of the team in a span weeks. It’s like he got gassed in the head and thought that his heroic performance gave him the green light to take as many stupid shots and forced drives as he wanted. After the season, I was secretly hoping he’d make a mistake and declare just so he’d be off the team. His skills have stagnated and his decision making ability have regressed over his 3 yrs.
As for Groce recruiting Chicago, getting his foot in the door at Simeon with both Nunn and Jaylon Tate is a good start.
