Amare Stoudemire will be out two to three weeks with a ruptured popliteal cyst behind his left knee, the New York Knicks announced after Sunday afternoon’s practice at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y.

Stoudemire returned to New York City on Sunday morning to get a re-evaluation of his knee, where he suffered a bone bruise Oct. 10 during practice. An MRI then revealed the latest injury.

Stoudemire is no stranger to injuries. He’s had chronic knee problems, a partially detached retina in his right eye and lower back issues, which started in the 2011 NBA playoffs and continued toward the end of last season.

Stoudemire was said to be in top shape coming into the season, hardly missing a routine of two-a-days during the summer. Also, coach Mike Woodson has raved about Stoudemire’s conditioning level in training camp.

Now, the Knicks again will be without their starting power forward during a key stretch — this time starting Nov. 1 to tip off the season, which includes matchups against the Brooklyn Nets, Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers (twice).

The Knicks first face the Sixers on Monday night at the Carrier Dome, where Carmelo Anthony led the Orange to the 2003 NCAA championship.

    —————————————————————————————————

What kind of ramifications will this have on the Knicks start to the season? And even more importantly, what happenes if Amar’e continues to be plagued by these recurring knee problems?

Hopefully Melo starts at the 4 while Amare is out. Melo at the 4 and Amare as the sixth man is probably their best bet in the long run anyway. I’m sure neither will agree to this though because it would throw Amare under the bus.

Damn, these big men are going down in bunches, it started with Amare and Dwight’s back in the spring, Blake’s knee in the summer, Dirk’s knee right now, Bynum’s knee is in the middle of being shut down for three weeks, Kevin Love’s hand, and now Amare’s knee.

This isn’t a big deal nor is it surprising. He’s had a lot of issues with that knee in general regarding his cartilage. Based on reports he’s been pushing himself hard this off-season and he probably has endured a little more swelling than he’d hope, causing this injury.

This doesn’t require surgery… Just good old R.I.C.E. He’ll be fine in a couple of weeks.

        Two different injuries.

Based on the first reports, it was just a Baker’s Cyst. That requires RICE for a few weeks until the pain/swelling is gone. That wasn’t a big deal. It’s nothing more than a sac of fluid that gets ruptured.

However, now after some form of "re-injury" and a second opinion, now it IS a big deal. It’s obviously more than just a Baker’s Cyst. I honestly think there’s some wrong with his cartilage, which is what his Microfracture Surgery repaired. IF that’s the case, then yea… He has a serious problem and may be out longer than the 8 weeks.
