slash787ParticipantIf you look at the OKC roster who is blocking him from playing time? Nick Collison, Daequan Cook, Thabo Sefolasha? Those are the players I see blocking him from player 20+ minutes per game.
I think he plays well in limited time this season and next season he gets some decent minutes and he will be getting 20+ minutes per game next season. He has the talent, the organization development, and a bunch of fringe guys ahead of him.
What I like most is his situation. He does not have to create his own offense like he had to in college. He can play off Durant, Harden, and Westbrook which based on this preseason he can do very well. I like that he doesn’t have the pressure to create anything on offense and that’s why I think he will be relevant fantasy wise. He will let the offense come to him off of Durant, Westbrook, and Harden’s production then turn those into easy dunks, shots, etc.
Based on what I have seen in the preseason he looks like he can play for a long time in this league.

ShekiruBoomParticipantits really hard to be a bust when you are a late first round pick

TyroberParticipantWho said he was a bust? I have only heard everyone talk about what a good situation he was in. I don’t think anyone thinks he will be a bust.

WolfRobParticipantWe don’t know if he is a bust or not yet, because he hasn’t played an official game yet.
(I do agree w/ everything you said though)

RUDEBOY_ParticipantI think he’s in a great situation….He’s not under pressure to carry a team..Like he would’ve been if he had been selected in the top 10..This is a guy that was mentioned as the possible overall pick 2 years ago…That lets you know what type of talent he was….
If he can continue to play well and improve his game…When his rookie deal is up,some team will think they’re getting a star player…And over pay him…..

Stevengoing up against kevin durant in practice is going to make him a great player in the future. #truth

Meditated StatesParticipantNow people are going to say he was not being called a bust, really? Barring injuring he is a top 5 player and the most talented player in that draft. Now we will hear situation is why. Yes it helps but his game screamed NBA from the start wich was ignored while he was being called soft.

jhbm24ParticipantWestbrook
Harden
Durant
PJ3
Ibaka
that looks almost as athletic as the nuggets but with BETTER players! I will always say this, Jones falling out of the lottery was the stupidest thing to happen in this years draft..

LipstickParticipantTotally disagree. It was the best thing for him. Want a kick in the butt and a motivator? Drop super low in the draft and notice how teams judged an inconsistent college career.
Really surprised Miami passed on him, but maybe it was to save some $ to lure in Lewis and Allen.

JoeWolf1He’ll never be considered a bust, even if he disappoints, because he was picked so late in the 1st round, but this is what is going to stop him from getting big minutes as a rookie.
1. As far as the 3 is concerned, he’s playing behind Kevin Durant who played 39 mpg last season. I don’t think the 3 is Perry’s best NBA position, but even if he plays every single minute at the position, when KD is out, that is only 9 mpg.
2. He’s not better than Nick Collison. Serge Ibaka plays about 27 mpg at the PF position and his main backup Nick Collison, who also logs some minutes at the C, plays around 20. That’s really just about a couple mpg left at the 4, and I do think that Perry will cut into Nick’s minutes because they’re very different players and OKC will opt for different looks, but Collison was the guy, giving Dirk fits in 2011 and icing OKC’s only finals victory in the last two mintues. He’s not going to be beat out by a rookie.
Again, he’s not a bust nor ever will be because of his late draft pick, but he’s not going to be a ROY candidate either because his team is so stacked. He looked good, the other night, getting easy buckets around the rim and not forcing deep shots because he made a couple early in the pre-season, but year 2 or 3 is probably when he is going to show whether he is a role player or something more.

slash787ParticipantThis guy had huge expectations going into the draft last season and he did fall to the late first round. Let’s say for example, he is awful and is out of the league in 3 years (which I don’t think will happen), what will people say about him? He WOULD have been a top 5 pick in the 2011 draft, he fell in the 2012 draft, and now he’s out of the league in 3 years? What a waste of talent and BUST. He has a perception as a player that is considered a potential bust and if he turns out to do nothing in the NBA he will be considered a bust. Perception is reality and the perception is this guy has a ton of talent and might not live up to it. What does that translate to? Bust.
As for you points regarding his minutes those are essentially the exact same points I made in my original post. When everything is said and done he will average between 15-19 MPG this season. In the 2013/14 season he will see that bumped up to 20+MPG easily.
I want to know what goes through the heads of a GM in basketball. How does Perry Jones get taken after Miles Plumlee it’s ridiculous. How does Jared Sullinger fall to the Celtics? I wish I could be in the same room as them to understand their logic.

HitsterParticipantPJ3 could well get into the PF rotation behind Ibaka and Collinson and with Collinson playing some C this could give him more minutes and he has the chance to maybe get a few minutes behind Durant at SF. Also if Coach Brooks ever goes smallball it could give him minutes perhaps. Coach Brooks IMO tends to run a tight roster sticking to his more proven guys which for contenders is often the case but it balances out as the likes of PJ3 will see more garbage minutes as the coach will pull his star guys out of won and lost games to save them.
As 28th pick, PJ3 cannot really be a bust, he was a low risk high upside pick.

slash787ParticipantHow many players can you recall were consensus top 5 picks by EVERYONE the previous season that were not drafted until the late first the following season not due to injury?

A.M.G.ParticipantA) I don’t think a player can be called a bust before he’s even played in a regular season NBA game.
B) Perry Jones was always going to be a project, so learning in practice on a team with a loaded frontcourt for a season or two might be the best thing for him. He has excellent potential, people want every rookie first rounder to come in and score double digits and be a starter their first year, totally ****ing unrealistic.
