cinowanParticipantNot better than Jordan, Magic or Kareem but I think he has an argument against the others in the discussion.
-He had less help than Bird and has more titles. Duncan is a top five defender of all time and likely the best ever at his position, whereas Bird was merely average.
-He’s mentally tougher than Wilt (by all accounts). A better team player with more titles. Duncan also played against stronger competition.
-Had MUCH less help than Shaq. Wasn’t as dominant in his prime, but again, a better team player, with less help winning the same number of championships. Longevity. Much better defensively.
-Russell played in a weaker era and was always on stacked teams. Duncan is light years ahead on offense.
He won one practically on his own. (2003)
He’s the greatest ever at his position.Criminally underrated. Get mad.

GrandmamaParticipantI’d have to put Shaq over Duncan. I agree with the rest though…

TomShoeParticipantI’d agree that he has a real case for top 5 all time. If he wore a Lakers or Celtics jersey he’d be top 5 for sure.
He’s always been criminally underrated and called "boring." The guy DRAG RACES for peat’s sake!

Hindsight is 20/20, so maybe he’ll get his due one day.

F_Si think they are referring to his style of play when they say boring… which is true

bloodits about damn time that we consider the best pf ever a top 5 player..MJ,Kareem,Magic,Duncan and Russel/Wilt(depends on what do you like more titles or stats) i think its time that one of those 2(Russell/Wilt) gets dropped out of top 5 of all time.. And I know there isnt Bird but i just dont know if its right to put Bird over Russell/Wilt and also at the end of the day its all personal opinion, basketball isnt like 100meters sprint where the fastest equals the greatest…there will never be official list of top 5 or 10 because every one of these guys were or are greatest in somebodies eyes..

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantIf their recent rankings were any indication, I’m pretty sure ESPN’s staff would have him behind Shawn Kemp.
If you look at NBA generations by the decade they entered the league, Duncan is a top three player in his generation. I think you can debate him, Shaq, and Kobe but it is elite company. He is certainly in the team picture for top twelve.

IndianaBasketballParticipantI think a lot of people forget Bird came to a poor Celtics team before McHale and Parish, and had the biggest turnaround in NBA history. I wouldn’t rank Duncan ahead of him. Duncan came to a team with David Robinson.
Bird wasn’t a rim protector obviously, but a very underrated defender.

Wavy BagelsParticipantIf he won at least 2 DPOY’s and Olympic Gold in his career, he’d most surely be in Top 5 discussion.

King CaluchaParticipantI like Duncan a lot. Probably top 10.. but I stopped reading the main argument when he said Bird was merely average at defense. Sorry…

ItsVictorOladipoParticipantI think people forget how well he has aged too. The Spurs rest him a fair bit because they’re a strong team and can afford to but his per 36 minute averages this past season at the age of 35 are on par with his late 20s. Per 36 minutes he averaged 19.7 PPG, 11.5 RPG and 1.9 BPG, as good as any bigs in this league not named Dwight Howard and Kevin Love.
