KHAM83ParticipantMKG is a high energy player who never gives up. Every championship caliber team needs a player like him, but in no way shape or form should he be drafted in the top half of the lottery, let alone by the Bobcats at #2. It’s easy for those who do not like his potential to discuss his weaknesses, but I will make my point by discussing his strengths! Biggest strength everyone keeps talking about is that he is a winner. Won in highschool and in college, and will bring a winning mentality to his team, which Bobcats needs. What you have to understand is that MKG played with top prospects in highschool and college. He had no excuse not to win. And being a winner in college is so overrated! Lets look at a few past "winners" and their impacts in the NBA:
2011- Uconn: Kemba Walker, carried his team to the titled, and biggest trait is being a winner. Yet Bobcats had the worst season ever. Not his fault, but with him being a "winner" people are claiming that the Bobcats need MKG because he’s a winner :-/
2006/07-Florida: Noah/Hartford/Brewer, again winners. Yet no one is a winner in the league. Noah is close, but his impact is more felt bc of his position. I liken MKG to Brewer and expect him to have such an impact.
2005- UNC: Felton/May/Mccants, again labeled winners, yet only one is still in the league.
2004-Uconn: Okafor/Gordon: Winners again.
2003-Syracuse: Carmello Anthony: Probably the biggest label of winner of them all. Did nothing but win in highschool and in college, yet he cannot carry his team.
Another strength of MKG, he’s a gym rat! OK, you’re a gym rat and yet you cannot shoot the ball to save you life? If this is true, then he’ll never improve on his shooting. How do you stay in the gym day in and day out and do not improve on this skill? Other winners coming out of college were Bird, Magic, etc but these gym rats had very few weaknesses if any at all.
Only lotto team that should even consider MKG are the Warriors who has a need for a sf and only needs him to do what he does good, play defense and hustle hard. Years from now he will not be top 10 player from this draft. Only other lotto team that should consider him are the Hornets at 10 if he were to slip.
Barnes is easily the better prospect of the two.

sheltwon3ParticipantI agree with everything you say bout MKG being great for Hornets because you need to add a perimeter scorer to help Davis out. He could work but it would depend on the rest of the team.
Also saying Melo can not carry a team. No one player can carry a team. Lebron left Cleveland because of this. Melo was stuck in the west which is why he never went deep in the playoffs because there were really stacked teams. Lebron would have never made the finals in Cleveland if they played in the West. Knicks need more time to gel and the two teams that sent them home were Boston and Miami. Miami won it all this year and Boston is one of the team that could make it to the Finals in the East. I think with a full season to gel, the Knicks should get a high seed and can show some post season magic if they stay healthy.

GoJOSH HUESTISParticipantOnly way the Hornets get MKG is if they trade into the top 5. The kid would never ever drop to 10, i can tell the future on this one:). And before someone mentions it, this kid is a good amount better than Gereld Wallace at the same age

cavairo7ParticipantI think its funny how we all think we’re draft experts and before any of these guys even play in the league we’re saying this guy is overrated, underrated, etc. Long ago I was guilty of this as well and to an extent I still have opinion about players I feel will be better than others and vice versa but the reality is that none of us know how these guys careers will go. Freakish injurys, bad player development, drugs/money, etc. may affect many of these guys so while I support speculation, lets not kid ourselves into thinking we KNOW how these guys will turn out as NBA prospects.

KHAM83ParticipantSo we do not know the future is what your saying? Wow, you just pointed out something we do not know! Theres a reaason we arent betting money here, this is for fun and bragging rights. We all love to say years down the line "I told you this guy sucks" and "I told you so and so was a sleeper!" We do this for fun man. Chillax. If MKG is indeed a bust, Ill probably repost in this topic years from now saying I told you so. and get a lot of negatives for posting in such an old topic :-/
If hes a star, Ill completly forget that I labled him a future bust.

TyroberParticipantIt’s not that MKG is labeled a winner and anywhere he goes he will make that team a winner, but he has a winning attitude. He would be a great locker room guy and would help everyone become better. He is not a franchiser saver or changer, but he would be a good #2 option and a great #3 option

GoJOSH HUESTISParticipantFirst off Jordan was also considered a gym rat yet he couldnt shoot and his jumper got better, Kobe Bryant Gym rat ….jumper got better. Like Stteven A Smith says "you’re only giving half truth’s" You fail to mention that Most H.S and college gym rats don’t need jumpers to dominate there fore they don’t work on them. You need it once you get into the NBA hence players work on it more and get better. As far as MKG his one weakness is his jumper. What else does he have a clear weakness in his game? Hanldes? No because he is more than capable of handling the ball well enough to go past guys and play the sf position
rebounding-good
defenese-good
basketball iq-good
potential-good especially since he is younger than anyone in the draft
Workethic/leadership-good
offense-good only averaged 5 less points that T.Rob,one point less than Beal, three less than Rivers…all considered scorers who are all at least a year older
Overrated…….nope

UNCbasketballbumParticipantI agree on your assessment that MKG is probably a little overrated. I don’t think he’ll be a bust though because of his energy and defense. Even if he never really develops a consistent jumper, he wil always be a high energy, defensive player, something all teams should covet.

lalailaParticipanttalking about MKG, yes his scoring makes us anxious but he is the real deal…if you are looking at 6’7 233 guy who can’t shoot and is only great defender yes he is no top5 but you have to look at him knowing he is THE YOUNGEST player is the draft he is still skinny but already strong and big he will easily just maturing will become maybe even 6’8 and well above 240 w/o losing any athleticism his transition play his elavation could be nearly unstoppable and you have to know he has great work ethic i mean GREAT..plus i believe guy is going to be Marion like rebounder he outrebounded TJones who avg 9rebounds per game his fr year, MKG would be close do a double double in nearly any other college team…also his passing skills are very underrated if you have watched UK games, actually maxsports has ranked this guy top10 playmaker in hs back in a day..im like 90% guaranteed he will reach his ceiling sooner or later..he might be the youngest but at the same time the most sure thing in the whole draft..
remember no one absolutely no one thought DRose can be the best SCORER in that draft because of his 14ppg because of his jumpshot they said it’s between OJ Beasley Gordon or even Bayless..Rose was also quiet humble hard worker he got his jumpshot he got confidence and now he is a superstar..i don’t want MKG to be 25ppg like Rose but it’s just one of ALOT examples showing jump sht is by far the easiest skill to develop if you are a gym rat..

chocboywndrParticipantLook if you are an MKG fan you have to believe he will get much better offensively, because you know that if he doesn’t he will become no more than a bit part player. His motor and intangibles will not change the fact that he cannot be a liability on the wing. It will not be enough be a defensive stopper unless he can puts points on board in halfcourt offence.

AstroParticipantIt’s a lot easier to get a jumper than quality dribble-move ballhandling.
I watched Barnes all year long, and during the NCAAs after Marshall went down his weakness in this area became quite conspicuous.
