I just thought about this and, sorry Phoenix fans, but I don’t think that the Suns are going anywhere as of right now. Here are all the players that they have some control over for next season:

    -PG:Aaron Brooks (RFA)/ Sebastian Telfair

-SG: Probably their 13th pick of the draft (Waiters, Rivers or Ross)

-SF:Jared Dudley/ Josh Childress (will probably be amnestied cuz his contract is horrible )

    -PF:Channing Frye/Markieff Morris/ Hakim Warrick

    -C:Marcin Gortat/Robin Lopez (RFA)

Even though they have some cap room, I don’t see the Suns getting elite FA acquisitions this summer as they are not very attractive because they do not stand as a potential contender. The truth is that their team is weak, and the matter gets even worse if they don’t get to bring back Aaron Brooks. If they bring him back and sign him, they only valuable trade pieces that they’ll have will be him, Dudley, Morris and Gortat as well as their 13th pick (Frye’s contract is too big for him to have much value).

So I was asking myself, what do the Suns do next? Do they stay put and  hope a big free agent signs and at worse sacrifice next season to get a top draft pick? Do they use their money to buy more picks in this draft, especially in the first round (heard OKC and Golden State could be sellers)? Do they trade some of their pieces to get another first-round pick (heard Dallas was ready to trade their pick if the offer is nice enough)? Or do they ship their 13th pick + 1 or 2 pieces such as Gortat or Dudley to move up the draft board and try to get a guy like Drummond who could change the franchise?

What do you think the Suns will do and what do you, Suns fans, want your team to do?

The thing they should do for sure is keep Marcin Gortat. There are not many centers who can give you 16 and 10 with very good defense. Gortat is a very good p&r defender and he’s was one of the leaders in charges taken so he is for sure a valuable piece. I think they should draft Rivers and build a team around him, Gortat, Morris. Let’s Nash go, maybe they can get a young player for him through sign&trade.

Their future really depends on the Draft Pick. If the guy they draft turns into an all-star then they have a team of really good role players that spread the court, play defense, and finish around the rim. If the guy they draft become a role player, then they don’t really have much of an offense.

I’m a Phoenix native and I’ve seen this coming for years.  Teams that are fringe playoff teams typically are in the worse position of any team in the league because they don’t get the high picks and aren’t contenders. Suns need to restart. Trade Channing if possible.  Amnisty Childress. Let Nash go, he deserves better.  Keep Gortat and try to sign Goran Dragic, but don’t overpay him.  Sarver isn’t going to pay any big name FA anyway and doesn’t seem to want to contend so might as well try to build through the draft over a few years.

They need to luck out. Luckily this is a very deep draft and if they get a guy like Waiters or Rivers and they really pan out then theyre in good shape but the odds are certainly against them.

If a teams future hinges on its 13th pick, that team is in trouble. Getting Kobe at 13 was a once in a lifetime opportunity. With that being said, I do have Ross going to Phoenix and I think he could be a contributor, just not a go to guy.

They really should start over, keep Gortat because its hard to find a good center who plays offense and defense. With the #13 pick they should take Rivers, if he’s gone maybe Perry Jones because of his upside ( use him as a SF) or just trade the pick for a young PG,SG,SF in the league. Sign and trade Nash and let Hill go. Let them do bad and pick in the top 5 next year, keep our money and sign two big FA’s next year. Phoenix can also do a lop-sided trade this year. Luol Deng is on the block too it seems now, try for him?

    I would:

-Draft Dion Waiters with the 13th pick
-Somehow buy a late first-round pick and draft either Royce White or Jeff Taylor (Yes I know, a very un-Sarver like move)
    -Resign Aaron Brooks
    -Amnesty Josh Childress
-Bring back Michael Redd and Sebastian Telfair
-Do not bring back Robin Lopez

    PG: Brooks/Telfair
    SG: Waiters/Redd
    SF: Dudley/White or Taylor
    PF: Morris/Warrick
    C: Gortat/Frye

It will not make the playoffs, it will probably be a top-10 lottery team, but at least there is some scoring punch there (Brooks, Waiters and Gortat), at least some depth, and potential upside in the form of Brooks and Waiters and Morris.

Get a top-10, hopefully a top-5 pick and adress either the point guard or power forward position, and utilize the cap space that they already have.

If the Suns want more scoring, perhaps go after Michael Beasley and play him at either the three or four?

Either way I just hope the Suns FO can make this a successful off-season. If they can, their future will not be as bleak as it seems, but only if they can make the right moves for the future.

Gortat is great, one of the most underrated players in the NBA. Dudley is a very good role player who is awesome when he’s coming off the bench, Frye can stretch the floor, Morris has some potential. So other then a good center, they have two great role players, a nice prospect and the #13 pick, yeah we’re fucked for awhile.

Gortat is very underrated but he won’t be a 16-10 guy without Steve Nash, I think we all know that.

I’d move Gortat. The team’s going to be terrible either way and Gortat will never have higher value than coming off this season with Nash. See if you can get Reke, for example, for Gortat, or another young wing, and let the team suck, then rebuild.

the suns are looking at 28 million in cap space, possibly 34 if they amnesty Chilldress. if the suns get to sign lets say Beasley and Landry Fields on 3 year front loaded deals with the third year being a team option, then they can still put up a decent team on the floor. and even though a long shot, steve nash has mentioned that he’s open to signing in phoenix since he likes the place, fans and training staff a lot.

This might sound like a long shot, but do you think the Suns could find a way to get Jeremy Lin? It has already been established that Lin wants to be in New York, plus he is a restricted free agent. But if the money sounds good maybe they could. Then get a a Rivers or Waiters in the draft and like somebody mentioined go after Beasley or maybe Landry Fields(Lin’s buddy). That could be a great start to L.A.N. (Life After Nash)

@ pulseglazer "and let the team suck, then rebuild"

that should have been made this year, without nash…a way better pick and by trading him maybe an extra pick.

Now, you have to let him go, you "gain" a weaker pick, nothing in return, with cap that you won’t utilize on anybody.

Haha, Gortat leading scorer at 15,4 this year…5 years ago the 5th scorer of the team was at 14,7, our 6th men of the year at 18,1…

They won’t spend in the free agency, i see more a move like the infamous kurt thomas move.

Spend for spending, leads to nothing, see the 2010 free agency for the suns and nets, pistons in 09….atrocious.

Personally, i would try to bring beasley for the scoring and draft ross, legit players at their positions, keep losing but with some fresh legs and potential, waiting for the next big PF and PG via draft or free agency in the next 2 years.

Yes, it should have been last year, not this, so they could have gotten more for Nash, but still, better late than never.

Looks like it is looking more likely that Waiters, Rivers and Lamb will all be gone by the time the Suns pick at 13, and that they might have to "settle" for Terrence Ross.

Not that I don’t like Terrence Ross, but he just doesn’t have that breakdown ability, go-to scoring ability that Rivers and to a lesser exent Waiters have. He’s definitley super athletic though and hopefully if Phoenix picks Ross he can start going to the rim more.

I am sold on getting Beasley, he can definitley add scoring and I can see him putting up 2010/11 type numbers if he can come to a situation ike Phoenix, but would he play the 3 or the 4? I’d prefer him playing the 3 so that Morris could start at the 4 and give the Suns a "tallish" front court.

    PG: Brooks/Telfair
SG Rivers or Waiters or Lamb or Ross/Redd
    SF: Beasley/Dudley
    PF: Morris/Warrick
    C: Gortat/Frye
