Yes I know that both of these guys aren’t in the same draft class but in terms of pure defensive ability, IGNORE OFFENSE, just in terms of blocking, intimidating, denying, stealing and defensive rebounding, how would you stack or compare one relative to the other: Anthony Davis and Nerlens Noel? Would you guys be so kind as to also compare how their stats may look like at the NBA level?

Also when looking at some of the best shot blockers in the NBA, with one name coming to mind: javale mcgee, what is it that noel and davis have that will make them better players than mcgee? Because I doubt that either of them can equal the athleticism of javale, and both are shorter with shorter wingspans. They also have a similar frame and build that mcgee has which is scrawny, lanky build so I don’t see them pushing people around. And there is no way that they can finish like Mcgee. So I’m wondering what is it that bigs like anthony davis and nerlens noel have that guarantee they will be better players than Javale Mcgee.

One thing that will make them better than Mcgee is IQ. If Mcgee was a smart player he would probably be one of the best defensive bigs in the NBA with his length and athleticism but due to all his bonehead moves no one takes him seriously enough to consider him to be a good big. Davis and Noel don’t have the reputation of having low IQ that Mcgee has so as long they make smart plays on offensive and continue the defensive dominance they’ve shown at lower levels and translate it into the NBA they’ll both be considered top defensive bigs in NBA.

Davis. He’s a smarter defender than both McGee and Noel. One major difference b/t Davis and Noel is that Davis maintained defensive integrity better. Noel will go after shots with no regard for where his teammates are, as will McGee.

Defense is about more than making highlight reels.  Davis has shown the ability to read the opposing offense and help at the right time, with great effectiveness.  McGee is too often just going for the highlight block.  Plus, most of Davis’ blocks don’t just stay inbounds, but are rebounded by his team.  Davis is also even quicker than McGee is rotating and defending the pick and roll.  I don’t think their is much doubt that if McGee played for Kentucky, even he wouldn’t have been the #1 defensive team in the country.  And McGee isn’t that bad of a defender; he makes very poor decisions, but he does alter plenty of shots and is a good rebounder.

Maybe I’m crazy, but when I think of shot blocking in the NBA I usually think of the guy who had 80 more blocks than JaVale McGee…

Davis still moves like a 6’3" guard and reads the game like a PG. he is also always in the right position as far as defensive rotations are concerned. Noel may be a slightly better shot blocker, but he certainly doesn’t guard PNR like Davis. McGee, as mentioned, is a rock head who has freakish talent, but will probably never fulfill it.

Davis is scrawny but when you see him banging bodies he looks like he has some stength in that tiny frame. I’m not sure how much weight he can put on or if he needs to but I think he can push his man of the block better than either of the other two.
