    http://espn.go.com/nba/playoffs/2012/story/_/id/8039570/nba-playoffs-dirk-nowitzki-sizes-kevin-durant

"KD," Nowitzki says, "is way ahead of my curve."

"He’s arguably the best player in the league right now," Nowitzki told ESPN.com over the weekend. "I see a guy that really has no holes.

"He’s a 6-10 guy with a 7-4 wingspan who can shoot it from the parking lot. He’s posting up now. In transition he’s so long that, when he gets a pass from the 3-point line, it’s a layup or dunk with one step. He’s got the one- or two-dribble pull-up, which you need to be a great scorer, because you can’t just shoot 3s or go to the basket if you want to be a great scorer, ’cause sometimes you can’t get all the way to the bucket. He can go both ways, one or two dribbles and up.

"And he’s clutch, too. He’s hit big shot after big shot all season long. He made three game winners on us this year. I thought he’s always been clutch, but now it’s almost like you know he’s going to make them. He’s phenomenal."

"He’s way more of a 3-man than I ever was," Nowitzki continued. "He handles the ball way better on the break than I ever did. He’s got deeper range. And he’s doing all this at 23. He’s won the scoring title three times in a row, so that he means he won the first one at 21. I barely got through my rookie year. When I was 21, Gary Trent was still killing me in practice."

Sounds like Durant has Dirk’s endorsement as the best player in the league. "I see a guy that really has no holes."

Gary Trent!! Props to Dirk for mentioning him. He was called “Shaq of the MAC” in college.

I forget that KD is only 23…. that is flat out scary.

Lebron is still the best player in the L

BUT if KD gets this ring man, it’s going to be hard to not crown him as the best, but Lebron is still the most talented and gifted player in the NBA hands down.

Durant is scary good to now, but is far far from what he could be.  Lebron is probably the most physically gifted basketball to ever play the game.  At his size and skill level, Durant is not far behind.  If Durant adds about another 10-15 pounds of sold muscle and develops his postgame more, he could go down at the greatest to ever play the game.

Its like the new type of NBA player, vs. the old school. Look at Lebron, so many people now today focus on athleticism and Lebron is epitome of it. Then you look at Durant, he’s built like the old school players. Long, lanky, athletic but can shoot with the best of them. Lol we may be seeing KD as a ghost from the past back to inflict humiliation upon scouts that judge players completely on explosiveness and athleticism.

Besides that, I’m already willing to call Lebron 1a, and Kevind Durant 1b. KD said this once about Kobe and Lebron James. But both KD and Lebron are on another level in terms of how good they are now.

Durant really is amazing because not only is he clearly a top-2 player in the NBA today (many argue #1), but his age and size make his potential almost limitless.  Is it possible he could beat MJ’s 37ppg average at some point?  IMO it’s unlikely, but not impossible.  Is it possible that he could break Kareem’s 38k career point mark?  IMO this is very likely as Durant’s frame could allow him to stay productive well into his 30s, barring injury.

Durant will probably end his career as one of the greatest players ever, close to, but below MJ.  But he’s probably the only player in the NBA right now that has even a very outside shot of surpassing the greatest ever.  And if he does, can you imagine being a fan of the organization that chose Sam Bowie and Greg Oden over MJ and KD?

I see I got negged for my last comment, let’s be serious here, if your ready to crown Durant as the best, you are outta pocket, he’s not better than Lebron.

    Don’t forget Lebron’s numbers at age 20(27.2PPG, 7.4RPG,7.2APG) and 21(31.4PPG, 7.0RPG, 6.6APG) were better than Durants at 23(26.2PPG, 7.5RPG, 3.3APG)

And Lebron was in the NBA finals at age 22 with numbers like 27.3PPG, 6.3APG, 6.0RPG.

Lebron has 3 MVP’s to show and has 3 finals apperances as well, and is in contention to get a ring this year and is only 27.

Durant is good, but better than Bron? NO

Show some respect for Lebron, seriously.

In the “Kevin Durant upside” thread I thought that Durant could be a Jordan/Dirk hybrid.
I could see a peak season for him at 33 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.5 blocks.
His baseline accomplishments that I posted for him in that thread earlier today were 5 scoring titles, 3 championships,
and 3 MVP awards. Now obviously he could do better than that (who is gonna outscore Durant?), especially if the Thunder
can hold onto their young core. The Thunder look like a team that can win four or more titles. Durant should be the early favorite for
the MVP award, since I don’t think theg will give LeBron 4 MVP awards in 5 years with Rose and Dwight Howard coming back from injuries.
Kobe is showing his age, as is Wade. Durant’s toughest competiton for the MVP next year might be Chris Paul, Rajon Rondo, and his teammate Russell Westbrook.

I posted that Durant is on track to be a top 20 player on time, and could end up being one of the best 10 ever.

i think the battle vs. lebron and durant goes further than just stats. i think durant is on lebron’s level, and if he wins the series, i will have no choice but to crown him the best regardless of stats.

not only is he 23, but he is still getting better

I think this is a great post. Props to Dirk for giving respect to KD. I’m glad to see two young guys doing their thing in the league. It’s only going to make guys coming into the league and already in the league want to strive for greatness which will be great for the NBA. In terms of Lebron and KD, I remember Magic said the other night that this is Larry Bird and Magic 2.0 in terms of style of play. What do you guys think about that? Lebron like Magic is the better overall player but Durant like Bird is the better scorer and one could argue more skilled than Lebron. Lebron like Magic is flashy and commands the spotlight like Magic, where KD like Bird is laid back and doesn’t care for the glitz and glamour. He just wants to ball. Either way I’m a fan of both and you can’t go wrong with calling either one the best player in the league.

A LeBron vs Durant rivalry would be good for the NBA, but I really don’t see the comparison to Magic and Bird just yet… Not even in style of play.

Bird wasn’t a flashy 6′ 9" point guard, but I actually think it’s arguable he was a better or just as great overall player as Magic.

Neither player has reached the level of these two greats just yet in my opinion.
