The Toronto Raptors know exactly what they want out of the 2012 NBA draft:

    An established, athletic wing man.

And that’s why the Raptors have already made it known to rival teams that their lottery pick on June 28 — No. 8 overall — is available to a trade partner that can provide the elite small forward they seek, according to sources close to the situation.

With a slew of league execs having converged on Chicago this week for the NBA’s annual pre-draft camp, sources told ESPN.com that the Raptors have at least two known trade targets: Memphis swingman Rudy Gay and Philadelphia’s Andre Iguodala

The Raptors, sources said, are prepared to part with their lottery pick in this month’s draft at least partly because they have a lottery pick on the way. Lithuanian star Jonas Valanciunas, selected No. 5 overall by Toronto in the 2011 draft, is poised to join the Raptors next season after the young 7-footer quickly established himself as one of the most exciting big men in Europe.

Yet it remains to be seen whether Toronto can manufacture the other assets needed to go with the No. 8 to tempt Memphis or Philly or any other team that surfaces with a top swingman available. Veteran point guard Jose Calderon (who possesses an expiring contract in 2012-13) and young big man Ed Davis are among the players that the Raptors would conceivably be willing to put into a trade package.

As ESPN.com reported Sunday, Toronto also plans to be a determined suitor in free agency for Phoenix Suns point guard Steve Nash, hoping to bring Canada’s former Olympic basketball captain and newly installed general manager of the senior national team back to home soil.

But if the Raptors decide, in the end, not to make a draft-night deal and keep the pick, they’re expected to focus on the top guards that could be available at No. 8. Sources say that Toronto is intrigued by Syracuse’s Dion Walters, UConn’s Jeremy Lamb and Weber State’s Damian Lillard.

Very Interesting and it does make sense if a team is looking to move up. The article says they have interest in Iggy and I have interest in acquiring a high draft pick (lol). Iggy for the 8th pick wouldn’t be bad but I think some sort of contract will be required to make it happen, unless the raptors are well under the cap. Thoughts on other possible trades?

Iggy is probably near or at his peak and I feel that 8th pick is a bit low for him and will Philly want to trade maybe their best player especially as they have Brand expiring next summer so he can be moved on if needed perhaps. Plus they are in the same division so could that stop the trade perhaps.

If Ed Davis was included then the trades look a bit more tempting but Toronto could always make a run at say Crash Wallace if they want an established SF via FA.

Good for Toronto for at least attempting to become a much improved team and possibly lure Nash to Toronto. As the article alluded to, I’m sure that Toronto would have to give up Ed Davis, Calderon, and perhaps some future picks in addition to the 8th pick to reel in an Iguodala or Gay type talent.

     Hey Toronto,

Could I interest you in both Charilie V and Austin Daye for that pick?  Two not-so-athletic SF’s.

    Take them!

They are apperently targeting Rudy Gay and Iggy… i personally want Gay more (even though his contract is worse/not good at all)

    I would do –

Jose (really good contract since its an expiring 10m, 8th, Ed davis (replace randolph)

    for

    Rudy Gay

this i think is a fair trade since Gay’s contract is horrible and i would even ask for their late first round pick becase i believe with this trade, the raptors will be giving a bit of cap space to the griz as well.

I know they have bad contracts and all, but is the 8th pick really worth Iggy or Gay?

As a Sixers fan I don’t immediately accept this trade on behalf of Rod Thorn, but the 8th pick and Davis is an interesting idea.  Raptors fans, can Davis play centre?

Tor trading for the very player they passed over to take Hoffa. Oh the Irony.

This is a giant mistake IMO. Don’t get me wrong, Gay and Iggy would be outstanding acquisitions but I would prefer to see the Raps tank one more season and play all their young fellas tons of minutes. Davis, Jonas, Johnson, Derozan and Bayless and whoever they pick at the 7 spot.

Getting Iggy or Gay and adding them to the projected starting lineup of Jonas, Bargs, Derozan and Calderon doesn’t feel like a particularly strong playoff team… which means Tor moves its way into Houstons purgatory.

Ed Davis may be the odd man out next season in Toronto with Bargs, Amir Johnson, and Jonas V. looking to get some substantial minutes. In Philadelphia, he could play a little bit of the center and if the price of keeping Hawes is too much, then Davis is going to get a lot of minutes as a back-up and will cost a fraction of what Hawes would.

I think it’s going to boil down to what type of team the Raptors want to establish (defensive minded running the ball through Bargs and complimented by Iggy, Demar, and Jonas OR offensive minded run and gun offense with Rudy as the focal point). Regardless, if they cannot get Steve Nash and still make a trade involving Calderon, then they got to get the best FA PG left (Andre Miller sounds good)

I think Toronto Has to keep this pick and wait one more year before dealing. B.C foolishly pulled the trigger on the Turkoglu and Jermaine O’neil deals and I don’t think he would dare repeat the pattern of settling for mediocrity by trading quality assets for one guy responsible for what will be so many roles as the team’s go-to guy, leader, defensive tutor, playoff vet, intangibles guy etc… not unless he wants to punch his ticket out of T.O

Don’t be stupid Bryan Colangelo.  Don’t trade so many assets for a guy who is not even an allstar.

Michael Beasley? Hmmm.. The Wolves would like to get that SG they need so badly and the 8th pick might help them do that.

This is a mistake I predicted the raptors would make after I watched the end of year press conference with BC. You could hear the impatience in his voice, he was talking about how the rebuilding phase was done. I was like what are you talking about it has been like 2 years and you don’t have enough young top teir talent yet. You could tell he was going to make the same mistake again like he did with Turk and O’neal and try to get an established player or players to fill in the roster. I think it is a huge mistake. This is a deep draft  I think at 8 they can get a better player than Demar and still get back into late first with a trade and add another solid player. They will still have enough cap space to get some short term veteran help.

I think at 8 they could get Lamb or Ross which would be great on the wing to pair with Demar who is in a make or break year. They could trade Davis and 54th pick for best player available in the early 20’s maybe Wroten or Teague. Yes that is a ton of youth but all you ever hear is how hard it is to attract free agents here and the team could grow together like OKC with a good coach like Casey. The core could be something like Demar, Val(5th pick 2011), Lamb, Wroten, Bargs. Contracts and money wouldn’t become issue for years and next year they still have vet in point guard Calderon add Amir, James Johnson plus cap space to get some more veteran help.

BC is in his contract year and is going after a short tem solution with Nash and Gay.I think with a good draft the Raptors could become a very young athletic team that could be good for 10 years instead of 3-5 and then having to reload after the short term solutions BC is considering now.

Dang, I have that weber pg going to the raps in my MOC, because I got Portland taking marshal. Hmm, I guess I will have to see if their are any trades before the trade.

Raptors should just try and target Rudy Gay, not a big fan of Iggy’s game at this point in his career.

Gay is two years younger and has proven to be more clutch than Iggy..

ex. Gay over the Raptors, "Noo Not That Guy!"

The Raptors is doomed for the next a few years with BC trying to his old tricks of patching the team again.

He’s trying to rush the Raptors back into playoff and then the Raptors would likely lose in the 1st round and continue this cycle of barely making/barely missing playoffs.

BC has no vision in building a championship contender.  All he wants to do is to get a solid enough team to get to playoff and keep his lifeline with the Raptors.  Unfortunately, even if he’s fired, the Raptors would probably hire an even worse idiot as GM.

I definitely won’t trade the pick for a so called established SF.  If I am going to make a trade, I would trade Bargnani and Ed Davis for Josh Smith and #23 (Quincy Miller or Tony Wroten Jr.)…….much better long term future than whatever BC has in his mind.

Move Demar to the 3 and Draft Dion Waiters. I’m tired of watching the Raptors draft the wrong guys. In 2004 they had a chance to draft iggy, in 2006 they had a chance to draft Gay. Why go back in time? Dion Waiters is the right pick, he’s tough and he looks like a Dwayne Casey type of player. Rivers would of been the pick, but his defense is suspect.

If the Raptors did move DeRozan to SF then they would have some nice SG options at 8 in the draft with Lamb or Beal likely to still be on the board and they could always look to move up and maybe try and snatch MKG or Barnes as one of them could well still be on board at 5 or 6 so they could maybe dangle something at the Kings or Portland to get into a position to get who they want. Ed Davis and the 37th pick could be a starting point of any trade plus they have Calderon’s expiring deal to dangle.
