So apparently Miles Plumlee put up a 41 inch vertical in the combine yesterday. That is kind of insane for a guy who is nearly 7-feet in shoes. So apparently with a running jump he can out jump Derick Rose, Westbrook, and Blake Griffin.

Yet this guy averaged less than 1 block per game.

How can this guy be that tall, that fast, and that good a jumper and just not produce on the court?

Anyway, did Miles just jump up in the draft? Personally, I just can’t wrap my head around him having that level of athleticism and fit that with the years of watching him and yelling at the TV for him to do something against the smaller, slower, weaker guy guarding him.

Miles no doubt has athletic ability , but basketball is more than athleticism and requires skill ala Paul Pierce to truely maximize your ability.  Miles has very little ball skill and while being very athletic vertically , he is average at best in the quickness/footspeed department to go along with short arms.  He will make an NBA team eventually at the end of a bench because he is 6’11 and has a 41" vertical.  If "Jorts" AKA Josh Harrelson can make the Knicks , Miles can make somebodies team.

I already knew him and Mason had big ups for their height.

I think he was already a borderline 2nd round pick but I dont know if it makes his stock any better. There are many impressive videos of he and Mason doing impressive dunks in summer play, but like ive said before..they both seem to forget about this athleticism outside of wide open shots and dunk contest

Also he will turn 25 during this next season , so he is most likely maxed out on potential.  What you see is what you get for the next 6-8 years.

Yeah, but 41 inches?!? Sure we knew he could jump and always could. But for a center a 35 inch vertical is considered really nice. Is a 6-11, 250 pound center going to put up the biggest hops at the combine?!? And it is a white guy?!? What is this world coming to?

If this guy was 19 and playing in Europe, he’d be going top five. This is the type of size and athelticism that got Darko taken with the number 2 pick. Thank god everyone knows what Miles can’t do so expectations will be realistic.

I had to rub my eyes when I saw he was in the Dunk contest.

Twitter. But I was wrong it wasn’t a combine. It was a group workout for the Timberwolves. Lots of prospects there but there was a lot of buzz about what Plumlee did.

He’s an athletic beast, always has been.  But sometimes it looks like he forgets what he’s doing on the court, he looked like a mid 2nd round pick at times and at other times it looked like he wasn’t a legit D1 player.

I wouldn’t pick him, but I think he’d be a good guy to give a shot on your summer league team.  He’s probably one of those guys who could be a double double (12/10) player in the D-League, but not be a guy good enough to get many minutes on an NBA team.

Just to caution everyone from getting too hype about Miles…

Coach K always said Miles was the BEST player in practice. He would always impress in preseason and that is why he started the first game of almost every season because how he performed in practice.

The problem is Miles could never put it together on the court when it mattered. I’m afraid he’ll impress a lot of scouts and they’ll pick him in the 2nd round only to realize he simply isn’t a basketball player.

Of course that problem is merely just a mental problem…and if he works that out he could potentially be a pretty serviceable big in the league.

Athleticism is worth nothing if you don’t know how to use it. Ask James White. Ask Gerald Green prior to last year with the Nets… In fact, Green did an interview where he said exactly that. He said when he first got in the league with Boston and later with Dallas, he had no clue how to play. He didn’t think when he was on the court. He realized being athletic is a huge advantage but only if you know how to use it effectively. Green said he pieced it together playing overseas. You still have to use your brain out there.

yeah theres no defensive 3 seconds in europe so it teaches you how to go to the hoop without commiting a foul

It is possible that is taken in the second round by the right team Miles could be a solid reserve.  He can just run the floor and finish and rebound, he could be a solid bench player.  His athleticism could translate better in the NBA than in college but no way this move him up that much.

I’m pretty sure putting up a 41 inch vertical has insured him at least a second round pick. I think that is just a lock. Remember, we live in a world where Kwame Brown commands a $10 million a year salary as a free agent. At least one team will want the rights to bring Plumlee in at league minimum for a year or two. If he can defend the low post and rebound, that is enough to stick in the league. And Plumlee was one of the better offensive rebounders in college last year at 3 per game when you consider he was only playing 20 minutes.

And if the problem is just mental, then I guess there is a chance he puts it all together. But really he (and to a certain extent his brother) do less with more physical ability than just about anyone in college.
