Honest question. I watched him maybe a half dozen times in college during his couple seasons there, but I never really focused in on his defense, I was too impressed by his passing and the other heels as a team. However, I did watch like the final 10 minutes of unc’s loss to unlv this past year,, and Marshall looked like he was stuck in wet cement vs their pg in straight up one on one situations with the guy going by him at will. Was that just an off game or is his defense really that much a liabilty?

I can live with a questionable shot and below average athleticism to a certain extent. But if he can’t stay in front of NBA guys, what makes him different then Marcus Williams from a few years back who was considered the best pg coming out and had an earily similar game to marshals minus some passing and everyone was shocked when he fell to about 20 and said he was a steal only to never make it.

Marshall isn’t a great defensive player, but I think he can be a decent team defender, and that’s where alot of point guards are going to these days. I think whoever drafts Marshall will need a defensive blueprine so he so his pluses, not his minuses.

I’ve stated on multiple occasions I don’t like Marshall as a prospect. His defense is one reason. His lack of athleticism and suspect shooting ability are my other concerns. He doesn’t have much upside at all and I don’t think his future is very bright in the NBA.  I’d much rather have Lillard, Teague, or Wroten if I were a GM looking for a PG in this draft.  All have much more upside.

Can he make life easier for his teammates lacking defence, lacking shooting ability, lacking the ability to create for himself, lacking athleticsm ??? I really think teams would just play off him, and dare him to do something like shoot. He isn’t like Rondo that has athleticism and defence to make up for what he supposedly lacks.

once again….you guys that say he cant shoot dont know what you are talking about.  he shot 38% from 3pt range as a freshman and 35% from 3pt range as a soph.  he is not a bad shooter or "cant shoot" by any stretch.  he is a better shooter than Jason Kidd was at the same stage…so his shooting is only going to improve.  so many people say Rondo cant shoot, but look at what he did the other night.  he is never going to be Ray Allen, but its confidence that keeps him from hitting more.  I think Rondo is really going to improve and I think Marshall has a more consistent jumper than Rondo.  He was really starting to take off in terms of his scoring right before the injury.

Defense is his primary concern, but he has the willingness and he should be able to play good team defense….sometimes you can make up for the foot speed with fundamentals and anticipation.  There will be times where the matchups will be too much for him, but Magic couldnt guard Isiah, or any other really quick PG’s.  Byron Scott and Michael Cooper usually had those assignments.

there is a lot that goes into being a good defender as a PG in the league.  the best and worst defenders are always viewable with the eye test.  some are good on ISO but bad on help and pick and roll.  some are excellent on help but bad on ISO.  some guys have the athleticism but are strictly gamblers on defense.  I often worried about Marshall’s ability to play defense in the league, but now I think it is highly possible.  There are a lot of PG’s in the league who are just moderate on defense, some are not good, some are good on good defensive teams, others would be better if they werent on such bad defensive team.  the point is, it just doenst go by footspeed.

He will make others better , just look at when he got hurt.  He made 3 guys who most consider all lotto picks look nowhere near as productive without him once he got hurt.  He is a good spot up shooter from deep though not off the dribble and while he lacks great on the ball defense footspeed wise.  He does have extremely quick hands , excellent size , and he understands the game in a way that others just don’t.  Maybe he is not a lottery pick , but if he falls to 17 and the Mavs get to pick him watch out , because that might be the best possible place for him to go to.  Learn from Jason Kidd , play with a guy like Dirk , and be coached by a guy like Carlisle.

I agree with Knicksboy on the defense part. As far as his shooting and scoring ability, it’s not great but it’s improved exponentially.

Lateral quickness is the only thing I worry about him struggling with at the NBA level, but he does have very good hands (quick & strong) so he’ll be ok. Plus he’s 200 lbs so it won’t be as easy to turn the corner on him. He will get beat off the dribble sometimes, but he’ll also stop guys as well as pick some pockets.
As far as shooting goes, I don’t think he’ll have a problem knocking down shots wheen left alone. Remember Mike Conley couldn’t shoot a lick coming out of OSU now look how many 3 balls he knocked down there playoffs.
He’ll be a good PG & floor general. I have no doubt he’ll impact games at the pro level.

He isn’t that bad of a defender like sum ppl say…. Sometimes he did get beat off the bounce he’s a pretty big pg tho..he’ll get quicker once he’s feel for the nba gets underway…he wil stick around cuz the man is skilled…

His set shot is accurate….def a more confident shooter than rondo
