fliptonnParticipantA lot of times worse players play better defense because the guy on offense recognizes the mis-match and thinks he can do anything with the ball. So he tries to force shots thinking anything he gets off against the guy guarding him is gonna be a good shot. When in reality if the guy on offense just plays his normal game then he’ll be just be more efficient than usual on a worse defender.

FastAndFuriousParticipantLocking up?
How do you deel about this topic?
Have you ever been locked up in a basketball game?
Or has someone who isn’t as good as you ever played solid D on you?
Sometimes I feel wack if someone who isn’t as good as me or maybe equal to me plays solid defense on me for a couple possesions.
But I’ve seen numerous occasions where in pick up games, NBA players get locked up by a unknown guy, or high major, mid major D1 guys get locked up or has solid D on them by D2 guys or even lesser.
Is it a big deal? Or do you think people really don’t care?

Raef LaFrentzParticipantIt happens. Some guys can defend certain guys very well.
It’s the great players who are able to adapt to their defender and exploit him (ala Kobe, MJ, etc.).

Wavy BagelsParticipantThere’s this one guy. He possesses a football player’s body, but plays ball as well. Everytime we play on opposing teams, he’s always guarding me. Telling you it is hard to get an offensive flow against the guy is an understatement. His stocky frame and his defensive effort shuts me down offensively. I find myself just getting the easy points and contributing elsewhere (assists, rebounds, defense, etc.).

FastAndFuriousParticipantBut sometimes it’s not that way, I’ve seen pro’s playing serious in pro am games, and still get shut down by a regular dude, no matter what tricks they pull out their bag, or they score 30 but took 45 shots.
Razorsharpe funny I was playing in a rec league game about 3 weeks ago and had this guard checking me he was 5’10 and 195 and I just had a hard time finding a groove against him, I had 25 points, but it was tough man, I stand 6’1 178 so I’m not that little but he was massive and strong lol

TallmanNYCParticipantI used to play pretty regularly against this wannabe pro guy at my gym. He was 6′ 6" in shoes a fit 205 lbs I would guess and fancied himself as a Two Guard at the next level. He looked the part, could dunk easily and had a nice looking jumper (he wasn’t super accurate, but it looked good). Anyway, I’m about the same size and weight as him, but am most decidedly not athletic enough to do anything but play low level college ball and I was a number of years out of college at that point. But I have vey good defensive footwork. So I would check him and he would get so frustrated. I know we were both thinking the same thing, that if he couldn’t light up a guy like me then he has no business trying to go pro. But I didn’t lock him up, I just contained him and made him take tough shots which he couldn’t hit all that often.

fliptonnParticipanttrue, its not always that way. i just know that when i play and theres someone whos clearly not as good as me guarding me, sometimes i try to do too much. and also when people see that someone 5-6 in shorter or just less athletic guarding me, theres a lot more help defense.

FastAndFuriousParticipantTallManNYC, true in some cases if a guy who cant kill a regular person then he has no buisiness thinkin about pro, but that’s not always the case, I’m teling you I wont name names, but I’ve seen guys who hoop just for fun, lock pro’s up, and I mean really give them a run for their money, sometimes that’s not always the case, I’ve seen guys who played at high D1 schools(Pitt,Oregon, etc) get locked by D2 players, or contained by em or even highschoolers.
dlipto: I have the same problem lol And I do think sometimes a guy who’s known tries to destroy a lesser known opponent and try to do too much lol I’ve done it and I’ve seen it done before, dudes be tryna cross the lesser known guys legs off.
