Since he locked up the No. 1 spot way early is his draft process the same that Tim Duncan was where The Spurs won the lottery and Duncan basically went to The Spurs and started learning their system. Lebron had the same situation in Cleveland. How much do you guys think knowing what team you are going to and being able to get in early and learn the system helps a player?

Depends on the team he goes to and how commited they are to ensure his transition to the league is smooth. And considering the Bobcats are locked at the No. 1 pick, I’m not so optimistic about the staff, unless that is, either they hire Jerry Sloan or Nate NcMillan and whoever they decide to have around them as the coaching staff.

He will basically get a month head start if he wanted too. Might help you get adjusted a little with already looking for a place to live and what not.

I mean, a tad. They have like, a month more of knowledge than anyone else (May 30 lottery, June 28 draft). Have a feeling that they still probably are on the same learning curve as everyone else. I mean, did Timmy go in and start working with the Spurs coaching staff as soon as they won the lotto? Pretty sure he and LeBron were just going through the process like everyone else.

Think the real learning for these guys starts in July, when they are officially signed, sealed and delivered. It may be a relief to know you are the first pick or what team you are going to, but I think having a month more to know the system does not give much of an advantage. At least not as much of an advantage as, you know, having the talent of someone who locks up the #1 pick in the draft.

@razor. The Bobcats are far from locked with the #1 pick. There is a 75% chance they will not get the pick.

He’s not going to experienced veteran teams like Miami or the Spurs…He’s going to Teams that are going to build their offense around him….

Coach Cal said he might be better off playing small forward his rookie year, until he gets stronger….But i wouldnt be surprised if by training camp, they say Davis grew inches over the summer..So a team might use him at center….But he has the talent to fit in anywhere..

SF at roughly 6’11? And he already possesses perimeter skills? That’s cray.

I am not sure if I understand what you guys are saying here, but if it is what I think it is and you are implying he gets some sort of head start after the lottery takes place…then you have to keep in mind that regardless of who wins….David Stern doesnt want that team to go around saying they are going to pick Davis.   They will be making politically correct statements….you know, the same ole hum drum…."there are some tremendous players in this draft, like MKG, Thomas Robinson, Andre Drummond, etc….certainly Davis is a guy we are looking at but we will be looking at any potential good fits…." blah blah blah…..

Everyone will know he is going to that team but I dont think he gets much of an advantage at all.  Its not like the NFL where you can sign before you are drafted.  If so, he could at least put his mind at ease and as Tyrober says, start making living arrangements.  Wherever he goes I dont think he will be totally thrown to the wolves…so he should just concentrate on getting his body ready.

I don’t know if I agree with that find videos of when Shaq was drafted they had his jersey at the lottery that night. Same for Lebron to. When Shaq, Duncan, and Lebron where drafted the teams came out that night and said that is who they were picking. I’m sure David Robinson and Patrick Ewing had the same talk as well if you can find old articles.

Yeah if there’s a consensus overall pick it’s pretty common for jerseys to be made in advance, remember the Blake Griffin suit jacket lining?

Of course they might not say outright they are going to take him, but I think the extra month would actually help a lot for a rookie. As has been said though, this only really applies if the team knows how they are going to use him and have a system in place to learn.

Hey guys….this is something that just started recently!  Omphalos….it actually started with Blake Griffin.  Mike Dunleavy was reprimanded when he was letting it be known that there was no doubt that the Clippers would be selecting Griffin with the #1 pick.   It was brought to light when the Wizards won the lottery and media was asking Flip Saunders if they were definitely going to take John Wall with the 1st pick.  Combine analysts were wondering why he was so dodgy with the subject.  Thats when it was revealed that Stern began "threatening" teams if they went around saying they were going to clearly take someone with a particular pick….especially the 1st overall because it takes the "suspense" away from the draft.  True story.

It was confirmed by commentators at the Combine this year that it is an official rule now that a team cannot confirm who they will select with their pick.  Like I said above….when Dunleavy said they were taking Griffin, he was reprimanded, but there was no rule in place….so it happened after that….likely last year or this year in terms of being an official rule.
