JoeWolf1I was reading nbadraft.net’s list of Top 10 point guards of this draft and I was shocked to see Malik Wayans coming it at #5.
He is an extremely inefficent player who not only doesn’t have great shot selection, but doesn’t even have college 3 point range. He is a strudy 6’2” in shoes, but only has a 6’2” wingspan, as was measured in the Deron Williams skills academy and despite having a few big games this season, stunk it up against any ranked opponents.
Against top 25 teams this season Wayans averaged.
10 ppg 4.3 apg 3.3 TO per game on 30% FG and 38% from 3 point.
I know this is a weak class for point guards, but how is he different from Scottie Reynolds, Sherron Collins, or Corey Fisher? At least those guys were more big game players.
Can anyone tell me why Malik Wayans is a better prospect than Scott Machado,Tu Holloway, Tyshawn Taylor, or even Dee Bost for that matter. I currently have Wayans as undrafted.
I’m not trying to be a hater, but what seperates him? It’s not shot selection, its not athletic ability, it’s not big game production, it’s not taking care of the ball. What is it?

RUDEBOY_ParticipantTo me Wayns is a better passer, playmaker and better off the dribble than Scottie Reynolds,Cory Fisher or Sherron Collins..Those guys were great college players, but were shooting guards in point guard bodies and werent great finishers….I remember getting a of negatives from guys on this site, when i said Reynolds wouldnt get drafted…Becuz if you’ve followed the draft as often as me,you’ll listen to what GMs are saying this time of year, instead of what scouts are saying..
When Wayns 1st announced his intentions to leave school i saw some writers that wrote he would not get drafted..But i wouldnt be surprised if he goes late 1st round..I dont think he’s better than Machado,Bost or Holloway…But i would take him ahead of Tyshawn Taylor, who scouts arent too crazy about..But the media and fans love his game….

JoeWolf1He just seems like that classic case of a good college player whose game doesn’t really translate. I would be shocked if he went in the 1st round, that seems way to high for him. I could see him going in the 50-60 range, but it just seemed like there were a lot of guys better than him to see him ranked at #5 on the site.

RUDEBOY_ParticipantTrue, but sometimes owners & presidents that know very little about the sport sometimes make picks in drafts when they’re no gm..And they’re not as informed as gms..They see that they need a point guard and pick someone they’re familar with..Strange but true….

RUDEBOY_ParticipantWayns will make nice 3rd guard on a team…

JoeWolf1Yeah, you make a good point too. He has the McDonalds All-American tag too, that will get you some level of hype no matter how your game looks at the NBA level.
Rumors can be all over the place this time of year. I remember a couple years ago it was thought Jon Brockman had a 1st round promise. That speculation alone vaulted him into the first round of a couple mock drafts 3 years ago.

JNixonParticipantHe’s a jet with the ball, he plays tough defense, he plays aggressive and looks to score. But he doesnt do so efficiently and he cant shoot. A team might like him as a 3rd guard, but that is real subjective and there are a good bit of short scoring guards out there who turn the ball over and play wild, ball-dominant basketball that arent in the NBA.

Da1potParticipantI remember being very impressed with him in the MCDAA game a few years ago, but that was the high point of his stock as a prospect IMO. He’s really not a point guard at all, and will struggle playing the position for a variety of reasons. Yeah hes a pretty good one on one player, but he is obsessed with that portion of the game, and he takes very poor shots and doesnt make necessary passes. In my eyes, he is a homeless man’s Ty Lawson. He tries to play the same way, but he doesnt do anything as well as Lawson does at all, and he doesnt have the same athletic tools that Lawson posseses either (besides having an advantage in height of course), in terms of speed, quickness, leaping ability, body control and even strength, too. I also haven’t been impressed with his overall basketball i.q. The fact that he’s an elite free throw shooter (89%) shows me that he struggles to make shots unless he is stationary, and that he also has a very poor shot selection if his fg% is 40% compared to his excellent free throw shooting.
He doesn’t do anything at an NBA level besides shoot free throws, so why is he an NBA player?
