Watching Shante Battier play with the Heat this year, he really reminds me of the role Bruce Bowen played with the Spurs on their title teams.  He really knocks down the corner three and is a great defender, two things Bruce Bowen did on the Spurs title teams.  Bruce Bowen was probably a more scrappy and dirty player than Battier, but I see them playing similar roles for their repective teams.

Definitely the same type of role. I hated Bruce Bowen because he was so dirty, but it’s almost hard not to like everything about Battier.

Could he possibly be a replacement for Derek Fisher on the NBPA?

The guy’s so articulate he sounds like my English professor.

Yes, except Battier isn’t dirty and doesn’t foul like Bowen.

@JunkYardDog Rings do the talking. And so far Battier has 0. He possibly could catch up to Bowen in the coming years though if he stays with the Heat..

so far bowen played with robinson duncan ginobili parker for the same steady franchise for maybe 7 years …? whereas battier played for houston (always underachieving team) and memphis (2001 2006 : bad area…)

so if I follow your reasoning bill wennington (2 rings) is a better center than pat ewing cause he has more rings ? mark madsen (2 rings) is a better pf than karl malone ? All the players don’t play with the same cards in their hands…

RINGS DO NOT ALWAYS DO THE TALKING…

Battier has always had great understanding of the game and high offensive awareness (underrated). Bowen was a good defensive player benefiting from a great defensive team system but he was almost a non factor in offense (except his 3pt in the corner). Battier is more skilled and has better leadership ability. He’s a better overal player.

Bowen was better, Battier is certainly a great defender and a guy who has played a similar role for the past few seasons; however, Bowen was a multiple defensive first teamer.  Despite Battier’s defensive accomplishements, he is not at that level of play.

Battier has always been better offensively.  He can also cover 4’s better than Bowen ever could… but Bowen was nearly unmatched on the wing and still has Battier there.  He was just more intense and harassing.

Part of the reason why Bowen was a great defender was because he WAS "dirty". I think a lot of people confuse dirtiness with toughness and the tenacious D that Bowen played harrassed the opposing player so much that they called it "dirty" when it really was just annoying tough D.

Shane Battier is too nice imo and too calculated to ever be considered as a good as a defender as Bowen.

BUT if Shane decides he doesn’t want to run for President of the United States than I can see him being an NBA analyst much like Bowen is today.

agree with akhan… on almost everything (battier should become a very good NBA analyst)

difference is about "dirty attitude". But as I posted on another topic that’s a difficult notion to describe…

and you pointed something really interested :  "is"  is different from  "is considered".

Maybe bowen SEEMS to be a better defensive threat cause he was dirty, and plays defense from a more individual point of view. Whereas battier’s work is not so visible and more collective…
