TomShoeParticipantSomehow, I don’t understand why people hate Duke so much. Is it because they win a lot?
All Kentucky does is form superteams and win championships, and no one hates them. Please clarify.0 - Posted on: Sun, 04/15/2012 - 4:56pm #659835

ChewyParticipantAre you joking? The hour Kentucky named Calipari their coach people had already started the cheating rumors. Plus each time UK lost in march, prior to this year, EVERY tv analyst was quick to jump off the bandwagon and bash them for being talented, but selfish and would go on and on about how "teams" beat them because their players were all "me" and no "we".

UNCbasketballbumParticipantI guess it’s dumb for me to write about hating Duke since I’m a UNC fan and have hated Duke forever, but I guess I’ll takea shot. Goofy white guys? Arrogance? Coach K looking like a rat? JJ Reddick? Chris Collins acting like a moron whenever he hit a shot? Anything here?

akhan786ParticipantUsually when you decide you hate a program, or told you’re supposed to do so, (ie UNC fans are told to hate Duke from a young age and vice versa), you begin to notice things from the rival program that you seem to hate. Even the pettiest of things can get your blood boiling.
UNCbball says he doesn’t like Duke’s goofy white guys, while I say UNC probably had the goofiest white basketball player of all time in Tyler Hansborough.
UNCbball says Duke fans have arrogance, while I say as a Duke fan living in North Carolina that UNC fans are some of the most egotistic and elitist people in the world.
UNCbball says Coach K looks like a rat and apparently that ticks him off, I say I hate Ol’Roy’s southern drawl and his what I consider unclassiness and immaturity that he repeatedly shows off in the media.
If Reddick played at UNC not many in the country would hate him, however if Hansborough played for Duke he’d probably the most hated college athlete of all time.
UNCbball brings up Chris Collins’s antics but I can bring up the numerous times that UNC players have acted like complete douches on the court when they celebrate. Especially John Henson who has a penchant of doing unclassy dunks with 10 seconds remaining when the game is already out of hand.
To put it into perspective all of these reasons for hating eachother’s programs are rather stupid. The real reason is that two of the most successful programs in college basketball history are only 8 miles down the road from eachother. And are constantly jockeying for position to be named the best in the ACC and in the country.

mikeyvthedonParticipantIf I cared to try I might WizKid. I don’t like Duke and think that UNCBasketball person gave some incredibly valid reasons. Everyone has reasons for disliking schools or liking them, it is in the eye of the beholder. For as many people that dislike Duke, there are more that love them.
Also, seeing that Kentucky seems to be churning out draft picks, going Elite 8, Final 4 than Champion in the 3 years since this has been happening, one might mistake this for everyone liking them. Still, I agree that a lot of people dislike UK and think the other shoe is going to fall for John Calipari one day. He may just be an awesome recruiter, but I wonder this about any good recruiter.
Still, I could care less who people like or dislike in college basketball, as long as everyone agrees that the Oregon Ducks are awesome (with a pass to Washington people, Oregon State and most of California).

I dont really follow Oregon basketball, but their court is pretty interesting. Oregon football on the other hand is f*cking awesome! Dennis Dixon was my boy. Would have won the heisman had he not gotten injured.

UNCbasketballbumParticipantHahaha, thanks MikeyV for that vote of confidence. As for Oregon Ducks, I don’t follow Duck basketball, but I don’t think anybody can hate on Duck football, from the stadium, to those unis, to their facilities, Eugene is where it’s at for the pigskin.

SpacegrassParticipantUk is straight even though the previous teams Cal has had at UK in 2009-2010 seemed to be a bit immature and selfish yet very talented. The UK team in 2010-2011 was just not quite talented enough yet great kids and the 2011-2012 team was the perfect blend of talent and team unity. I don’t dislike UK’s players or even Cal , I can’t stand their fans. At least 50% of their fans are pissed off rednecks who generally know nothing about basketball outside Lexington.
As for Dook , they just have a slew of guys who constantly are dry humping each other at the bench everytime someone takes a charge which also creates a tendency to be posterized quite a bit. Dook is suppose to be so good and some of their guys are , I respect the hell out of Grant Hill , Elton Brand , and even Nolan Smith as players. But , too many of their guys that are suppose to be big time college players and they play like over the hill scrappers from a rec league team. You have some great Dookies that move on to great careers in the league. Then you have Zoubek , Burgess , Paulus , McBob , and others who are considered 5 star prospects or better yet they never do anything close to their hype. On top of that they recruit mostly upper class private school kids who honestly are a bunch of sheltered bitches. I can speak from experience hanging out on a handful of occasions at least with members of their 2002 recruiting class. I had girl I kicked with that had propensity for athletes , Reddick was an excellent college player and has found his niche in the league but , the dude is a complete douche nothing more needs to be said. Shav Randolph as boring as watching paint dry and extremely soft , could get punked down by 5’7 guys. Shelden Williams , I felt bad for him because he was just a socially awkward goon that I didn’t understand why he was like that considering he was a big time recruit. Only guy that was very cool and will likely be very succesful without basketball was Lee Melchionni guy was a just a good dude that didn’t seem full of himself , retarded , or overly sheltered. Maybe that was because he wasn’t as highly regarde of a recruit.
I also hate some of my fellow UNC fans and many of them but , as for our players not many have pissed me off. The only ones the last 10 years or so were Kris Lang mainly because I can’t stand people with cultural identity crisis plus he seemed like a whiner , Drew II because he was way too Hollywood and very overrated and honestly I don’t think he loves the game nor is he willing to put in the work. He is just lucky his old man is who he is and thats 90% of the reason he is where he is.
There really aren’t any other players from other teams I can’t really stand because they are all just kids and I was far from perfect as a kid but , certain fans of schools can make you want to stab them in the eye with a soldering iron.

GlenTaylorSucksParticipantIt’s honestly hilarious/kind of sad to watch the rivalry between the Badgers and the Gophers. I grew up in Minny and attended UW. Just from what I’ve noticed, from the Minnesota end of things, it seems like it’s really just jealousy- UW’s the better academic school, does more with less talent…etc. From the WI end, it bothers me how arrogant people from WI can be about their teams. Of all my time at UW, this year was by far the worst student section in terms of a ridiculous sense of entitlement and straight-up arrogance. Not just with the Badgers- Packers fans were absolutely insufferable this year.
I dunno, hating a school on principle is just stupid. That said, as for Duke, there’s a reason outside of just sports that people have such a negative view of them. Just from what I know about the campus, there are apparently lots of uppity douchebags that go there- just look at the lacrosse team a few years back, for one example. I think that perception extends to the basketball team, even though a vast majority of them don’t deserve it. Lots of Duke guys have been absolute class acts. It takes one JJ Redick (a grade A asshole) to spoil the bunch though.

akhan786ParticipantTo be honest most of the reasons listed here for hating Duke are kind of petty and soley opinon based. I don’t even buy the whole "cause they win a lot" either because I’m not too sure we’re even top 5 all time in wins in College Bball.
The knock on Coach K for only recruiting private school kids is untrue but I understand where you are coming from. But then again that is how all of Duke athletics HAVE to recruit which is recruiting a certain type of person to go along with the player.
Duke University is a top 10 school in America, so obviously they’re going to shy away from players with either bad grades our shady histories. You don’t see Duke getting the Demarcus Cousins of the world because most of these guys can’t qualify academically at Duke. It’s a bit annoying that we are handicapped by this and don’t even at least get a chance to recruit every player in the top 10 (not that we are consistently pulling in the ones we do recruit which is why we could get any help we could get).
I think one major knock on Duke fans from my perspective is that they are a very spoiled fan base. This is probably true for a bunch of the bluebloods but since it is my favorite team I notice it more with Duke fans. If we don’t win the NCAA title all of a sudden the sky is falling down while they don’t really understand that it is almost complete luck to win a championship unless you have overwhelming talent.
I’m sure there are more non petty reasons to dislike Duke, but I don’t know how old some of you posters are on here but Duke used to be loved back in the late 80’s as much as Butler was loved today when they went on their string of post season success.
How would you guys feel if all of a sudden Butler started pulling in big time recruits from our other favorite teams and then starting winning a national championship or two? And can you think of the slobberfest from ESPN and the mainstream media they and Brad Stevens would get if that happend?
I’d be pissed I can tell you that. And that’s kind of how the national Duke hate started and then every misstep that a certain player or Coach K did was amplified by a thousand by all the Duke haters.
I can definitely understand the flowering of Duke hate from UNC fans and this is mostly stemming from Coach K upstaging Dean Smith who was essentially God in North Carolina. I mean here’s this small time coach who’s name no one can pronounce all of a sudden starts winning a couple games against the holy Dean Smith? Who the f does he think he is? And then he not only goes and ties him for amount of National Championships within a couple years but then he has the audacity to go and repeat and get one more ship than Dean? How dare did he and right under Dean’s nose 8 miles down the road.
At the same time this guy is doing it at the university that most North Carolinians scoffed at because they were too "northern" and diverse (and many couldn’t get in). They believed that UNC was truly the best university in the world and they had the best everything. The best school, the best teachers, the best campus, the best athletics, and DEFINITELY the best basketball team.
This is how the Duke rivalry with UNC REALLY started. They had a couple of heated moments before but when Duke started upstaging UNC nationally that’s when the wine and cheese crowd really got incensed and the largely UNC biased media in North Carolina took hold of the ‘Duke Sucks’ media narrative.
Everyone here knows how the media works. If you repeat something over and over again falsehood eventually changes perception and becomes reality. In this case it was shaping Duke into this evil empire.
These last couple of generations grew up with knowing that you are SUPPOSED to hate Duke.
Added to that ‘Duke Sucks’ has a certain ring to it no?

akhan786ParticipantLol FireKahn you’ve never been to Chapel Hill have you? It is like uppity douchebag heaven.
Almost every rich kid in the state dreams of going to UNC.
All respect to UNC though. They’ve educated many of my family members and imo is one of the best public universities in the country.

mikeyvthedonParticipantAs much as we have gotten a legion of people in love with our player picked jersey patterns (Uncle Phil has our back) and our b@lls to the wall style of play, people still hate on the Ducks. One school that has started to dislike us mightily is USC. Now, I give props to the condom nation (see what I did there? lol), they are an incredibly prestigious football program and tend to reload every year. Still, I find their latest hate tactics a tad hypocritical.
My younger brother also went to U of O and now lives in Los Angeles. He walks to work and proudly wears his Duck gear at times. Once this football season, he was literally chased down the street by a guy in a suit who was waiting for the bus for work. He was apparently working as a psycho that day, shouting that Oregon would never win a championship and how superior his school is. You have to run after a person to say this? In a suit?
Now, this one takes the cake. My brother works at a store that sells athletic apparel in a nice part of LA (do not want to spell the store name out, but I think you can guess what brand it is). A couple weeks ago, they were allowed to dress in college gear, school of their choice. My brother of course was Ducked out.
Well, Keyshawn Johnson (the writer of such classics as "Just Give Me The Damn Ball" and former #1 draft pick of the New York Jets) starts following my brother around and harassing him. He throws the "Oregon will never win a championship" line out there as well (Which may be true, but we have done pretty well the past few years). He also talked about getting our "hand caught in the cookie jar" with the Willie Lyles thing. Funny, because is his team not just getting off a suspension due to paying Reggie Bush 10 times what Willie Lyles received?
Luckily, while this 39 year old retired 3 time Pro Bowl and USC alumnus was badgering my brother (who was stating his case, as he had every right to do, seeing as Keyshawn instigated the whole thing), someone stepped out on my brothers side. One of Magic Johnson’s brothers (I think he has 9, so I do not know exactly who) sided with my brother in the altercation. So, I say props to Magic’s bro and Keyshawn is a schmoe.
