News broke today that Larry Brown has interest in the SMU job and he is among the candidates being interview for the job. http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/ncb/story/_/id/7812766/larry-brown-candidates-interviewing-smu-mustangs-source-says

It’s hard to envision that if Larry Brown is truly interested in the SMU job, that they wouldn’t hire the hall of fame coach. Lets assume that he does get the job, what does this mean for SMU basketball?

SMU had a tough season in C-USA last year, going 4-12 in conference play, and heading to the Big East in 2013 probably won’t help much in terms of their record, but it may help in their recruiting, especially if they get Larry Brown. They only have 1 offer (to Super 60 recruit Tyler Roberson), so they have plenty more offers to hand out.

Again, this is assuming Larry Brown goes to SMU, it might be outside the realm of possibility to believe that top recruits would not want to go to a Big East school coached by a hall of famer, even if that team happened to be the lowly SMU Mustangs. There are seven uncommited recruits from the state of Texas in the 2013 ESPNU Super 60, including one right in SMU’s backyard of Dallas, Texas in Julius Randle.

I know this is all hypothetical and there is a big if in Larry Brown going to SMU, but do you think the combination of SMU going to the Big East and Larry Brown being the head coach of SMU will help them land some top recruits and become relevant on the national stage?

One of my good friends, Blaise Mbargorba, is going there next year to play basketball. Assuming most of you don’t know who Blaise is, hes a 7’0 ft super athletic center who has surprising range on his jump shot. he came over from cameroon his sophomore year and played a year at st. benedicts when the team was stacked and didnt get a lot of burn (was still learning the game). He spent the last two years at Peddie (a prep school in NJ) where I got to play with him for a year and he pretty much dominated. Labled a "best kept secret" by the NJ Herald he got offers from Georgetown, Vanderbilt, and SMU he decided to go where he felt most at home. With a really good coach the guy could be an animal so keep your eye out. But the point is, Blaise isnt the only guy, that team has a lot of potential and with the right guy in the drivers seat they could really go somewhere. Very interesting post, thanks for bringing it up, and keep your eyes open!

Hopefully he fills out because I read he’s listed only at 220 and the Big East is pretty physical. But hopefully that and some added experience will equate to some NBA looks, because athletic 7 footers are hard to find.

SMU is going to the Big East?  That is complete and total Bullshet!  That makes zero competitive OR geographical sense.

Why wouldn’t he want to go to SMU, if he is as good a coach as people think he might want to prove it by turning them into a real program. and if he doesn’t people will still say no one could do it. Win win.

By his senior year he’ll remind you of Festus Ezeli or maybe even Ekpe Udoh with the right coaching. But if Julius Randle goes there that whole team really has a bright future.
