The slim hope the Nets had of Deron Williams signing a contract extension has been dashed completely.

Williams’ agent said his client will play out this season and become a free agent next summer.

Deron will not be signing the extension,” Jeff Schwartz told The Record this afternoon. “Based on the new rules it doesn’t make any sense for him to sign the extension. It has nothing to do with how much he likes New Jersey. Because of the rules, he’s going to play the season out and probably opt out of his deal.”

As The Record reported in today’s editions, sources with knowledge of the Nets thinking had been resigned to the fact that the chances of Williams’ signing an extension were slim.

According to the new rules, Williams can get a two-year extension from the Nets for roughly $39 million that would be tacked on to the two years, $31 million he has remaining on his deal. If Williams opts out after the season, he could get five years, and about $101 million from the Nets or four years and $73 million from another team.

Nets general manager Billy King spoke to Schwartz on Wednesday, the first day executives could contact agents. King expressed interest in Tyson Chandler and swingman Aaron Afflalo, and had conversations about Williams’ future.

“Jeff and I had spoken about Deron’s contract situation and I am very comfortable with their decision,” King said.

As The Record also reported today, Williams likely will be a Net for the entire season. The extend-and-trade option isn’t appealing to him, Schwartz confirmed. Through that avenue, Williams can only receive a one-year extension for about $18.7 million.

But the fact that Williams will opt out doesn’t mean he won’t re-sign with the Nets in July. They plan to do everything they can to make sure the All-Star point guard is with them when they open the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for the 2012-13 season.

Their hope is to acquire Dwight Howard in a trade from Orlando. In the meantime, the Nets also are targeting big men in free agency with Nene and Chandler topping their list.

They’re trying to build a roster that can compete for the playoffs now and become a championship contender when they are in Brooklyn.

Williams just returned to the New York area after playing in Turkey. It’s unclear when he will show up at the Nets’ practice facility. Players are permitted to go in for voluntary workouts beginning today.

I cant believe i was bashed last year  saying that the trade for Harris was stupid, i knew i was right, Not just giving up Harris, but Favors, and 2010 number 3 draft pic.  This is the worst management i have ever seen.

look at the past , when a player doesnt sign an extention, usually he wants to leave.

DWill clearly wants to be paid and rightfully so, but I don’t think him not signing an extension means that he wont be back in a NJ/Brooklyn uniform. He wants to win a chip and he knows the roster as its currently constituted will not cut it. The pressure is all on Billy King to upgrade asap.

He isnt looking for and upgrade team, he is looking for a team where he can have a chance to win a title. The Nets are near the bottom, almost anyone they sign could be an improvement

but it came after they missed out on signing Wade,Lebron,Bosh or Amare…then the Melo deal fell through….and they did shock people by getting Deron Williams but it was at a very costly price…

Harris was a decent Starting PG, Favors has a lot of potential and could have grown next to Lopez, The 3rd in this draft could have gotten them Enes Kanter,Brandon Knight or Kemba Walker…saving themselves from this whole scenario…I know they wanted to get 1 star as to lure another…But In retrospect they should have held onto their pick and Favors…Harris could always have been traded later…if Deron leaves after his deal is done in NJ, it will be the dumbest trade ever…

There must be something in the water…Becuz Chris Paul agent informed the Hornets on wednesday that his client wont sign an extension with them and he wants to be traded to Knicks…..But i dont think the Knicks have what the Hornets want…New Orleans should DO that Rondo for CP3 Trade RIGHT NOW….

I don’t see the celtics taking paul to let him go in 6 months to a rival NYK….

and there is absolutely nothing in the knicks roster that can interest boston if there is a 3 team trade.

The trade really wasn’t that bad. Favors has potential, but lets see him actually contribute for 30 minutes a night before we get so worked up about losing him. Williams is a huge upgrade from Harris. And all of those picks mentioned above have serious question marks.

But what the Nets were probably counting on was that in the new CBA home teams were going to have a huge advantage resigning their own players so that basically the home team using its "Larry Bird" rights could never even come close to being matched by another team. But the players would not stand for that deal so it got watered down in the agreed CBA. There is still a pretty big advantage, so Williams is going to have take a lot less if he leaves for another team. Some one will do the math eventually and I suspect it will be north of $20 million difference. Taking into account that the Barclay Brooklyn Center is going to be off the hook and the huge marketing potential of being the face of what will basically be a new franchise playing in a huge TV market and that is going to be hard to leave.

So if Williams resigns for another five years and this deal results in the Nets having an All-Star PG for 7 years of his prime, is this a bad trade? And since that is still a possibility, then you can’t say for sure this was a bad trade.

of course he is not going to sign at the moment, they don’t have enough talen there to make him want to sign.  this will all change if they land a couple of key players and build a winning team, then he will wanna sign…

It’s simple math; If he signs the extension he gets $70 million over the next 4 years from the Nets. If he hits free agency he can get 4 years $73 million from another team or 5 years 101 million from the Nets. I wouldn’t give up $3 million either.

i would sign the extention, the 3 million is small price to pay for security. What if he gets hurt, i would take a 5 percent pay cut knowing that my money would be guaranteed

I am sure he is probably going to end up staying with the Nets, but there is no point in signing an extension right now. I am 100% sure that if Howard was traded to the Nets then both he and Dwight would sign an extension together. By him not signing an extension then he puts pressure on the Nets to keep trying to improve. If he signed an extension right now then management would relax a little bit because they got their star locked up. Not signing an extension is the smarted move to make the Nets better imo

This isn’t shocking news. Why would he sign an extension? It would give the inclination that he is possibly fine with a rebuilding project, and I’m sure he would want to compete for a title sooner as opposed to being tied up for years while the teams slowly gets pieces. There was a 0% chance of him signing an extension before they brought in title contending worthy pieces to the team.

It’s not 3 million dollars, it’s an extra year and 31 million dollars.

Would you still sign the extention?
