tli232I might be overthinking this, but just bear with me on this one:
As we know, the Americans in China (notably Chandler, Martin, and JR Smith) cannot be back in the US until the end of February, which coincidentally will be around the time NBA championship contenders sign waived veterans for the veterans’ minimum. (think Troy Murphy, Mike Bibby, Corey Brewer).
I see a few interesting scenarios developing here:
1) Do these guys start "mysteriously playing poorly" and force their hand for the Chinese to release them? This way they can hopefully get back to the US before February.
2) Do they start pulling a Steve Francis and cry for their teams to release them? *I don’t wanna play for Vancouver :'( *
3) Will they negotiate with their Chinese teams to end their contract without litigation? I’m not sure even if any of these guys paid a few million dollars to their respective teams, they’d be let go. This is a matter of PRINCIPLE and the Chinese don’t like to back down.
4) Do they play just poorly enough so that their teams don’t make the playoffs so as to ensure they’re done their season before the NBA free agent signing deadline?
5) If these guys do somehow get signed by an NBA contender, will this be the best chance these three have at a championship? A contender having Wilson Chandler come off the bench to play good D on anybody at the 2,3, or 4 and space the floor all while being a high energy rebounder will be much tougher to beat in the playoffs. Imagine the Heat getting Wilson Chandler for FREE for the rest of the season. WOW.
What do you guys think is the most likely scenario? I’m not super up to date with the exact NBA contract situation for these players in China.

WinterSoldierParticipantThey could call in sick everyday or fake an injury so there forced to release them.

tli232The players falsely calling in sick is tortious misrepresentation leading to damages in American law and they’ll defs get charged with that here. However, this is China, I wouldn’t put it past them to put these players on trial criminally where they may get a Jail sentence.
Scary thought.

NashyMingParticipantJR Smith already overreacted to a minor injury after his debut and flew back to the US for body check (instead of using the body check provided by his Chinese team).
I am pretty sure JR Smith would be the first one back.

McDunkinThey should honor their contract. Why should the Chinese league pay for a mistake you made? Their agents made it clear that they wouldnt be able to leave if the lockout ended…or atleast they should have.

r377ParticipantI think they should honour their contract also. These chinese teams put confidence and put up the cash for these NBA players.
I personally think its great that with the lockout, alot of overseas NBA fans get to see some NBA stars in action….
