2quick4uParticipantso who would be your all time MVP and you all time 1st TEAM if we only take into consideration 1 regular season, the best of each player? of course you have to say wich season and if you want, you can argue why…
here are mine,
.all MVP:
michael jordan(1990-1991): 31.6pts-6rb-5.5ast in 37min.pg
beyond stats, to me MJ is the definition of basketball, and the greatest player ever, and this was the season when he took the reign of the game from magic and bird. that season he had the perfect balance between athleticism, skills and maturity and the team had a good record(61-21).
.all 1st TEAM:
PG: magic johnson(1986-1987): 23.9pts-6.3rb-12.2ast in 36.3min.
greatest point guard ever, he changed the game and redefined the position, there has never been other player like him. oscar robertson averaged a triple double the 61-62 season but he did it in 44.3min, magic almost averaged triple double in 4 season but he played less than 37min. pg…team record(65-17).
SG: michel jordan(1990-1991)
SF: lebron james(2008-2009): 28.4pts-7.6rb-7.ast in 37.7 min.
the toughest call of all, really tough to pick him over bird in any of his mvp seasons or over e.baylor’s 61-62 season, but lebron made that horrible team win 66 games… incredible!!
PF: charles barkley(1992-1993): 25.6pts-12.3rb-5.1ast in 37.6 min.
yeap, in know you might not agree, but i think this guy will never get enough credit for what he has done in basketball playing as a PF in modern basketbal at only 6’5 against 6’9-6’11 opponents…no words. team record(62-20)
C: will chamberlain(1961-1962): 50.4pts-25.7rb-2.4ast in 48.5 min.
guess there’s no choice here, even though he played 48.5 min. pg., and he played in an era where the average height of centers was 6’8 and also the pace of the game was a lot faster, still those are stats too impressive.plus he also had the 100 pts game..the funny thing is that he wasn’t the mvp of that season.. team record(49-31)

IndianaBasketballParticipantDamn… Wilt Chamberlain averaged 50 points and 26 rebounds, and his team was only 18 games over .500?

ItsVictorOladipoParticipantI dunno about putting Chamberlain at C for a season in which he didn’t even win MVP. Team success is such a large factor in the MVP process and winning 49 games just isn’t that impressive and keep in mind that he averaged 39.5 FGA per game that year (MJ in his highest scoring season averaged 27.8).
I mean if the thread wants to honor best individual statistical seasons for different positions Oscar Robertson and Rick Barry probably deserve a spot as well. And Jordan should probably be in for his 1989 season when he averaged 32.5 PPG, 8 RPG, 8 APG and 2.9 SPG.
For center I’d probably have Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for his 1972 season when he averaged 34.8 PPG, 16.6 RPG, 4.6 APG and played dominant defence for a 63-19 Milwaukee squad.
Charles Barkley at PF is a solid choice, PF would probably be the hardest position for me to choose. Between Barkley’s 1993 season and Malone’s 1997 season (27.4 PPG, 9.9 RPG, 4.5 APG for 64-18 Jazz team) and Duncan’s 2002 season (25.5 PPG, 12.7 RPG, 3.7 APG, 2.5 BPG, All-Defensive First Team and a career high 80 FT% for a Spurs team that won 58 games).

2quick4uParticipant–indianabasketball, that’s the great thing about basketball!!, individual stats don’t win rings and doesn’t mean to be the best.
–itsdwighthoward, this thread is not about individual stats, if it were i would have chosen other players like you say or even other season for MJ. this is about choosing the best season from the best players in each position, but of course we won’t agree in everything. others might select other players or other season from the same player. may be for someone else MJ’s best season was in 1988 when he averaged 35 and was also elected defensive player of the year, or the 1996 when the bulls had a 72-10 record. but that’s why i opened this thread, to know other opinions…
and talking about chamberlain, it’s true that the team record wasn’t great that year but still they finished 2nd in the eastern conference behind the celtics who had the best record with 60-20.
and like you say, he averaged 39’5 FGA but still he had a .506% wich is pretty good. go check bill russell’s FG% in his career and you’ll be surprised…
