Game of the day: William and Mary 59 vs St Johns 74

WM played the Johnnies tough in the first half while shooting the lights out, but were overmatched by St. Johns athleticism late in the game. St. Johns pressure defense forced many turnovers and let to a lot of transition points. Harkless, Lindsey, and Achiuwa stood out for the Red Storm while Quinn McDowell played really well for the Tribe in only his first game back from a major knee injury. McDowell should have a great senior year after increasing his ppg, rpg, apg, 3pt%, and ft% over his first three. I could see him as a PIT invitee at the end of the year.

    • Quinn McDowell SF- 20pts, 8reb, 8/13fg, 4/8 3pt
    • God’sGift Achiuwa C- 17pts, 9reb, 6/10fg, 1blk
    • Nurideen Lindsey SG- 19pts, 4assists, 5stl
    • Maurice Harkless PF- 17pts, 8reb, 4assists, 2stl, 1blk

Eastern Kentucky 66 vs Mississippi St 76

Unfortunately, this game was not televised so I could not get a good look at the teams but I’m impressed on how EKU kept the game close throughout. Box scores can only say so much but it look like Renardo Sidney did not play so well. On the other hand it looked like Moultrie, Hood, and Bost led the Bulldogs to the win.

    ·          Renardo Sidney PF/C- 9pts, 3reb, 3to, 3stl

    ·         Rodney Hood SF- 12pts, 9reb, 4assists

    ·         Arnett Moultrie PF- 13pts, 10reb, 2blk

    ·         Dee Bost PG- 23pts, 6reb, 6assists, 5to, 4/8 3pt

    Valpo 64 vs Arizona 73

Another close game, Arizona pulled away behind a great effort from Jesse Perry and Kyle Fogg. Perry attacked the glass hard and was Arizona’s main scoring threat from inside while Fogg did his damage from the outside. The game changed for Arizona when Jordin Mayes hit back to back threes late in the second half. Highly touted freshman Nick Johnson played well but Josiah Turner really struggled. In the 1st half Turner was over penetrating which led to two contested misses and a charging foul.

    • Jesse Perry PF- 14pts, 10reb, 7/10fg
    • Kyle Fogg SG- 16pts, 4reb, 5/7fg
    • Nick Johnson SG- 14pts, 6assists, 3reb, 8/9ft
    • Josiah Turner PG- 7pts, 1assist, 1/7fg

Games on Wednesday to keep an eye on:

    Lehigh vs St. Johns

    Akron vs Miss St

Co-sign on Turner struggling. He seems to lack the elite quickness to blow by smaller PGs and isn’t strong enough around the rim to finish through contact. I know it’s only one game, but his D was also sloppy, he was giving up straight line drives a lot of the time.

Chol showed some nice defensive instincts, but I feel he’d be foul prone at the next level.

Nick Johnson intrigued me though, very athletic, unselfish player who could adapt to the PG spot at the next level. Not afraid to shoot it, and plays with a lot of confidence.

I have watched Arizona vs Seattle in exhibition play and vs valpo last night. And Josiah is definitely not ready to be a standout player. But I totally disagree with it being about his speed or how hard he attacks the rim. Those are actually the only 2 things that I think really standout about him right now. He basically has no jumpshot so he over penetrates into traffic and seems to lack confidence doing anything but driving. Until he gets a jumper, he’s gonna struggle. Nick Johnson looks legit though and is clearly the better frahman of the 2 through 2 games.
