ShekiruBoomParticipanthey so my entire life i played as a slasher with great finishing ability like I would get and 1s regularly and make some crazy layups. but i stopped playing for a couple of weeks and now when i play i can’t finish anything. not the gimmes but the ones that require some contact and some distorstion. And now that i’m not confident in finishing at the end of my drives, my entire game is completely thrown off and i am now just useless. I have no clue how to regain this ability its not like I can practice getting hit in the air and distorting my body by myself. plz any tips to help a very frustrated player

Scottoant93Participantmy best advice is to play as much pick as possible, and constantly attack the rim.
you can do drills where you can have a friend foul you while you attack the rim, that could work.
I say just keep going through the motion and it will come back to you on its own, your just shaking off the rust on your game from that playing that much, just keep being confident and don’t doubt yourself. God Luck man!

JunkYardDogParticipantor re invent your game… start spreading the D by shooting at a high percentage and being a 3pts threat.
only need shooting mechanics and repetition.

paint intruderParticipantYou could have a friend standing under the basket and hitting you with these big soft pads. Derrick Rose uses them as well.

omphalosParticipantI’ve had the exact same problem; after a season where I won the MVP in our rec league attacking the rim as a scoring PG, I took some time off to let my body recover because I had some nagging injuries, and when I came back the game-time handle and finish was just missing. However, you just need to play through it and know it’ll get better with time. I’m sure a lot of them are just missing? You’ll get the expertness back, just try not to think about it.

inukawaii8Participantto finish around the rim, you need to have good back and abs power… maybe you just lost the muscle power.. just play more.. and your ability should come back to ya..

Andrew1984ParticipantThere are three considerations that come to mind:
1. When your conditioning is lacking, it takes all of your energy just to get to the rim, and you don’t have the energy you need to focus on finishing the shot once you’re at the rim.
2. A lot of players miss finishes because they’re out of control and off balance. Speed and athleticism do not matter if you’re out of control. High school and middle school basketball is are games of technique and skill, not necessarily speed and athleticism.
3. Think about angles. When you’re shooting around by yourself, shoot a ton of shots within four or five feet of the hoop. Bank them in high off the glass. A lot of times, players miss finishes because they’ve taken a poor angle and haven’t given themselves a chance to make the shot.

Bmore_DCParticipanthonestly just practicing your layups over and over again…go hard at the rim…switch it up with a power dribble or hop-step…youll get your groove back by playing but just go at the rim with no fear

aamir543ParticipantI am glad that you’re not missing open layups, so you’re not that off, but finishing with contact is hard, so don’t be too harsh on yourself.
I see that some guys have really good moves and get to rim well, but they can’t finish. The reason I noticed is because they aren’t explosive enough, and hang in the air (but aren’t that high) and blow the layup. The key is to recover yourself in midair, and try to get a decent shot off. But you probably don’t need me to tell you this, cause you know what it takes to finish at the rim. Just work on your jumping and speed, and if nothing works, try a midrange stepback. Not a conested fadeaway, just a stepback and nice short shot inside the lane. And if you beat your man off the dribble and have him behind you as you drive the lane, than you can put up a floater, and if you have a man running the baseline, than you could drive down the lane to the last minute and then dump it off at the last minute.

JoeWolf1Familiarize yourself with shots from different angles around the rim. When you are warming up or shooting around take some time doing the Mikan drill or just shooting one handed shots around the rim, using the glass, going under the rim, all sorts of stuff. This will jog your muscle memory so when you are in a game situation and you don’t have time to think about it, your body will be more famliar with different types of lay ups.

IndianaBasketballParticipantA lot of it is timing and rhythm, but it sounds like you lack strength and balance. I mean, you’ve only not played for two weeks though, so it’s probably strength and balance. Do some core strengthening excerices. Doing some pushups, pull-ups, dips, etc will increase upperbody strength.
Just keep it simple though. This isn’t NBA 2K lol. If you’re struggling finishing through contact, then pumpfake or hop step… Gather yourself and then go up strong.
Or even better, you could open your game up and get better at other things on offense.
