rileymcshea3ParticipantOK like many users on this website we are big fans of basketball.I am one of those and I play basketball.Im a Freshmen in Highscholl on the JV team and of course my ultimate goal is to make it to the NBA .I will work my hardest everyday and make every effort to achieve that goal of being a NBA player.
BUT the sad truth is I dont have a very good chance. The majority of us on here love sports (mainly basketball) and spend alot of time being involved with sports in all kinds of ways (EXAMPLE watching sports like ESPN or a regular game, or reading and talking about sports ,or playing sports ) and I am of those people
SO my secondary dream job is to be analyst or a annoucer for sports game. Charles Barkley seems to have the best job of entertaining and expressing his opinion on the amazing game of basketball.Another job is like being a analyst on ESPN like Chris Berman .Or being on PTI. Thats the kinda job I want so how would you get these jobs??? And how good do they get paid
PLEASE HELP

M-DYMESParticipantIf u want a position as coveted as a sport announcer here some things you will probably need to do.
1. A degree in media communications or broadcasting
2. Be as out going as possible. Build connections…no way are you getting this position without knowing some people with power.
3. Start doing podcasts or something to practice and get your name out.
4. Can you announce for your HS?
5. Try to get on a radio station as a sports analyst, or the paper as a sports columnist.
6. Work on those vocals. Your speech more than likely will need to be something people are willing to listen too. Although, some announcers this is an exception for, more than likely b/c they either were pros or networked their ass off.

Scottoant93Participant^^^^ M-DYMES gave you some excellent advice,
.for podcasting you can try to make one for this site, that would be a good start, or make some videos on youtube, you could also videotape some games your watching mute the TV, and provide some voiceover as if your calling the game.

inukawaii8Participanteveryone already gave you lots of good info.. also, write blogs on espn and stuff, and when you get into college, look for internship opportunities in sports media such as espn, fox, nbc, and etc…

FilipinoEllawhy not use the web? use the youtube, almost everybody knows the youtube, make a podcast there about the recent games?
Dont get discourage if in the first few months, it not a hit, if that is what you love, then continue doing it, make it as honest as possible like charles barkly do, it helps being 6’6 bear, LoL,
Make it FUN for the audience!

Andrew1984Participant1. Double-major in broadcast journalism and sports studies
2. When you go to college, intern or volunteer at the college radio station
3. Understand that you won’t start out as a 22-year-old covering the NBA or NFL. You’ll have to spend some years covering much lower level sports. Everyone has to start at the bottom and earn their stripes.
4. My personal advice would be to pray and ask the Lord to show you His will for your life and career.
0 - Posted on: Thu, 10/20/2011 - 3:37am #604657
Andrew1984ParticipantAlso, analyst jobs almost always go to former professional athletes and coaches. The typical broadcast features a host who generally has a background in journalism and broadcasting, with one or two former players who serve as the analysts.
For example, ABC/ESPN: the Breen-Van Gundy-Mark Jackson team: Breen is the play-by-play guy and host. He has a technical background in broadcasting and journalism. Jeff Van Gundy is a former coach, and Mark Jackson obviously was a former player.
TNT: Ernie Johnson is the host. His background is in broadcasting and journalism. Kenny, Charles, Magic, and now Shaq are obviously all former players. You can throw Chris Webber in there too.
So unless you make the NBA as a player or coach, if you want to get involved, you’re going to have to settle for being the geeky guy. Sorry, my friend!

JSakes22ParticipantIf you’re a freshman in high school and you have any sort of potential there is no one stopping you from going to the NBA other than yourself. You just need to understand that it takes one step at a time, but if you believe you can do it than you can. You are still young (14-15) I’m guessing and that means that there is still more than enough time to work hard, get your head right, and fufill the goals you want to obtain. No one can stop yourself, but you.
I’ll tell you a little story…
I grew up playing against this kid who had a deadly jumper. Lethal. Could hit from anywhere on the floor, but that kid was fat. Very obese and tell you what he really didn’t look or play like a basketball player would, but damn he could shoot. Thing is, this kid wanted to go to the NBA and he wanted it bad. So you want to know what he did? He got skinny, worked on his ball handling, his quickness, his jumping, his strength, all of those things that are needed to be a good basketball player. Wanna no who that kid ended up being?
Jimmer Fredette.
Me and him used to go at it when we were 13-14 years old. Two of the best players in the Albany, NY area. I ain’t even lying to you either there was a time I was better and that’s because I worked hard, loved the game, and had visions of me being a successful player. Then injuries happen and high school and girls and all that stuff that takes your eye off the prize. Since Jimmer is mormon he didn’t get clouded with all of these external issues and kept his eye on the prize and look at the kid now, he’s a lotto pick, National Player of the Year and living it good and I couldn’t be happier for the kid. One of the nicest, most genuine kids you’d ever meet.
Point is, if you want something that bad, then the only person stopping you is yourself. All you need to do is work hard. WORK HARDER THAN WHO WORKS THE HARDEST. Do things to make yourself a better athlete. Run, jump, lift weights, seek guidance. If you are over 6’0" tall and are a good player (and you must be if you’re a freshman on JV) than there is no one stopping you but yourself. You wanna no why 90% of players don’t make it to the NBA? Cause they quit on their dream. They stop thinking they can do it so they can’t.
All I’m saying my brother is don’t quit on the goals you have. Just take them one step at a time, embrace the moment, and work as hard as you can and even if you don’t make it to the NBA I’m sure you’ll be happy where ever you are.

aamir543ParticipantYeah, is it possible to have the credentials to become a sports writer/collumnist, while still being able to have the ability to have a degree that would be more helpfull in in more realistic scenarios.
0 - Posted on: Thu, 10/20/2011 - 6:21pm #604810

rileymcshea3Participantok and JSakes I like you comment and Jimmer is my favorite player in the NBA
Im kinda like Jimmer and have unlimited range and shoot about the same percentage from 40 feet out as I do from the regular highschool 3
BUT the problem is Im having huge trouble on trying to shoot above my head like NBA players do because right now I shoot from my chest like most highschool players do
0 - Posted on: Thu, 10/20/2011 - 6:39pm #604812

OhCanada-ParticipantLol young brother of course you shoot from your chest. Your like 14 lol. Correct it and move on it should only take a couple months. Nows the best time to correct it actaully.

aamir543ParticipantSince this thread has turned into a turorial situation, can someone help give me tips on how to get in great basketball shape within a month. There were 30 non returning sophmores at tryouts,(more than 50-60 in all) I made it to the final four, and got cut. But after talking to all the coaches, they told me that the main reason I didn’t make the team was because of my conditioning, and It makes me upset that I had everything except the most basic part of the game.
And because I am a restless competitor, I have this crazy plan of getting really fast within a month, and then trying to do somthing in mid-late November, when the football and baseball guys have their mini-tryouts. I know it’s tough, but it’s somthing I really want.
0 - Posted on: Thu, 10/20/2011 - 6:48pm #604814

Scottoant93ParticipantAamir543 if its not too late join the track team, one of the best way to get in shape is to run, will help your endurance, and also try some weight training
0 - Posted on: Thu, 10/20/2011 - 6:55pm #604817
aamir543Participant^ Already tried that, I joined in the spring, I was seeing great progress- and then I sprained my ankle. I was still at decent speed for most of the summer, my game was getting better and better, but I didn’t keep running while I was fasting during Ramadan. And I was thinking about cross country, but someone told me that the coach wants guys that can at least compete, and the slowest guy on the team has a 6-30 mile, I have never beaten 8.
0 - Posted on: Thu, 10/20/2011 - 7:03pm #604820

Scottoant93Participantyou should til try for cross country, some people say things just to discourage people, but if don’t i found some links for conditioning drills
http://www.basketball-drills-and-plays.com/basketball-tips-conditioning.html

also riding your bike works.

rileymcshea3ParticipantYeah any body have tips on moving you shot move your chest to the head?
0 - Posted on: Fri, 10/21/2011 - 10:28pm #604953

GrandmamaParticipantM-Dymes gave you great advice, I’d try to do everything he mentioned if I were you…One important piece of advice I’d give is to really focus on school the next 3 years. Start browsing for colleges and see what schools offer the best Media Communications or Broadcasting programs. Make it your goal over the next few years to exceed their admission requirements.
0 - Posted on: Sat, 10/22/2011 - 8:04am #604980

NbanflguyParticipantYou could try to sleep with a major executive for ESPN and pretend that your falling for her. Date her for the next 2 years. During the whole dating process, occasionly drop hints like saying, "Being an ESPN NBA analyst would be awesome" or "Thats my dream job" On your 2nd anniversery, take her to a fancy restaurant and pop the question. Have her dream wedding. At the wedding she will most likely invite some of her ESPN friends, do some networking. During the honeymoon, ask her if she can get you an interview. Nail the interview. You got your job
Let me know how it goes.
0 - Posted on: Sat, 10/22/2011 - 8:10am #604981

ProudGrandpaParticipantThere aren’t any female execs at ESPN
0 - Posted on: Sat, 10/22/2011 - 8:12am #604982

NbanflguyParticipantFine then go for a male exec. If its your dream job then you got to do whatever it takes to make it happen.

ProudGrandpaParticipantAin’t no gays, either
0 - Posted on: Sat, 10/22/2011 - 8:22am #604984

NbanflguyParticipantListen Gramps. This isnt the 1930’s. Gays are free to be gay and Girls are now spotted outside of the kitchen on a regular bases. Not saying i agree this, but its the world we live in now.
0 - Posted on: Sat, 10/22/2011 - 8:27am #604985

rileymcshea3ParticipantOK but does any one have advice on how to move your shot from your chest to over your head because im having a hrd time doin it
0 - Posted on: Sat, 10/22/2011 - 8:29am #604986

ProudGrandpaParticipantHow old are you? If you are already out of college, it may be kind of late. I have similar aspirations, so I joined the HS newspaper as a sportswriter. I’m gonna go to college and get a journalism/communications degree. After that, you just take whatever openings you get. Maybe get involved with a fledgling sports website (like this one) then that might lead to yahoo sports.com or something, and finally to ESPN. That’s the fastest way I can think of if you want to join The Network.

rileymcshea3ParticipantIm a freshmen in highschool
0 - Posted on: Sat, 10/22/2011 - 10:45am #604995

Scottoant93ParticipantIt takes just reps… balance, set your feet, jump, raise ball above head, follow through. You will eventually just do it on you own. or just follow this video(i know expertvillage blows, but he explains it pretty well)
0 - Posted on: Sat, 10/22/2011 - 4:41pm #605008

ProudGrandpaParticipantget on your newspaper staff. If you’re not a great writer already, maybe go to a camp at a local college. and try to announce for one of your school’s teams.
0 - Posted on: Sat, 10/22/2011 - 8:59pm #605043

rileymcshea3ParticipantWell Im NOT retarded and have never shot a basketball in life
I know how to shoot a basketball
I just have trouble switching from shooting infront of my chest to shooting above my head
0 - Posted on: Sat, 10/22/2011 - 9:25pm #605046

Scottoant93Participantdude im trying to help you, im not saying your retarded. If you watch the video it shows you how to set up your shot. you just need to go in the gym and practice until you feel comfortable with your form. When i played I just started raising my elbows and shooting over my head(was i good at it at first, no but with practice and adjustments it worked). sorry if you felt offended that wasn’t my intentions,
0 - Posted on: Sun, 10/23/2011 - 3:16pm #605125

rileymcshea3ParticipantOK I apreciate it but in all honestly that guy doesnt look like he knows that much basketball
0 - Posted on: Sun, 10/23/2011 - 6:01pm #605142

GrandmamaParticipantChanging your shooting style will come with time. A lot of it has to do with strength. I wasn’t able to have a normal stroke until 8th grade. As you grow and get stronger, it will become easier to have a normal shooting stroke.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 10/23/2011 - 6:30pm #605146

rileymcshea3ParticipantOK so should i just try to over my head with proper form then overtime i will have it down?(and how long do you think it will take)
0 - Posted on: Sun, 10/23/2011 - 6:33pm #605147

Scottoant93ParticipantBelieve in or not according to the bio that dude played college basketball is name is Travis Corpening, played guard at Francis Marion University, and played semipro for the Wilmington Sea Dawgs of the CBL. may not be that impressive but he got farther then most.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 10/23/2011 - 6:35pm #605148

Scottoant93Participantshoot over your head and over time you will get it. How long, depends on how many hours you spend working on it, it might be tommorrow, it might be in a few months. Just chill you will get it, and then you will wonder why you worried at all
0 - Posted on: Mon, 10/24/2011 - 7:08pm #605284

rileymcshea3Participantaight thanks
