UPDATED at 12:20 p.m. with source saying Ross could return in January

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Freshman LaQuinton Ross won’t be with the Ohio State basketball team at the start of this season.

Ross was ranked as the No. 43 player in this freshman class by Rivals.com, the highest ranking among the incoming OSU freshmen. There have been questions about his academic eligibility, and on Monday the NCAA ruled Ross a non-qualifier academically. Ohio State, which starts practice on Oct. 14, announced Ross will not be on the roster when the season begins.

By NCAA rules, non-qualifiers are those athletes that don’t meet eligibility standards. If they remain at a school, they can’t receive an athletics scholarship for a year, can’t practice or play for a year and they lose a year of eligibility.

But a source said that Ross plans to leave Ohio State and attempt to get the necessary test scores and GPA that would make him eligible. If he does that, he could enroll at Ohio State in January as an academic qualifier and be eligible to play.

Point guard Shannon Scott is the freshman many expect to contribute the most for the Buckeyes this season, but at 6-foot-8 and 225 pounds, Ross certainly had a chance to help Ohio State as a scorer on the wing.

The Buckeyes lost three seniors off last season’s Sweet 16 team – David Lighty, Jon Diebler and Dallas Lauderdale – but could have a deeper bench this season.

Big man Jared Sullinger, guard William Buford and point guard Aaron Craft will certainly start, while DeShaun Thomas should join the starting lineup and provide more scoring as a sophomore. Sophomores Jordan Sibert and Lenzelle Smith Jr. should fight to be in the mix, as should incoming freshmen Scott, forward Sam Thompson, center Amir Williams and center Trey McDonald. Junior transfer Evan Ravenel also will provide depth in the front court.

I was really looking forward to seeing this kid in a buckeyes uniform. I hope he somehow makes it back to the team.

I remember hearing about LaQuinton Ross the summer before he even started HS as the only player going into the 9th grade in the Elite 24 (he even scored 10 points). I think he was about 6’6, but he was pretty close to the height he was now back than. As time went on, I heard that other players just kind of caught up to him and that he had a questionable "motor" and work ethic. These are just what other scouts and services were saying, but, all in all, he still ended up as a highly regarded prospect at the wing. I think the Elite 24 did kind of give him unreal expectations, and I noticed this year it was all juniors and sophomores. Also, I think the fact that LaQuinton never really bulked up at all probably is another reason some kids passed him in the rankings.

Had heard rumblings about him not being eligible, hoped he would be. Really wanted to see how he did this year, hope that he gets the chance to play as a late academic qualifier. He definitely has game and length for the wing position, I do not know if he would have played a huge role early on, but down the line I am sure he will be at least a strong contributor. Ohio State still has a nice group of recruits coming in, including Sam Thompson who is fairly similar to LaQuinton, if less highly regarded. Nonetheless, while this is a bummer for Ohio State, I do not think it ruins their season.

Yeah I agree with MikeyV. He’s one of the guys I think could have surprised some and emergeed as a major prospect down the line if he was coached properly by Thad Matta. His skills at that height are not common. He’s incredibly smooth and has one of the prettier jumpers ive seen in this year’s class.

I thought he and Sam Thompson would have complimented eachother well and been able to bring different things off the bench this year for the Bucks. Ross could stretch the D and on the right nights is capable of having big games at the Big Ten level as a freshman. Thompson could be an energy player this season and a game changer with his dunks. He also has all the tools to be a standout on the defensive end.

Is it me or are more recruits ineligible or in question of being eligible this year than usual

    Well that stinks to here.

I had them as my champs and while i still do it never hurts to have another body on the bench
