TC_42ParticipantThis is part of an article from DailyThunder.com…
You may not have heard, but there has been a lot of talk about Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant. Not just in the sense that they’re both incredible individual talents that can do amazing things on a basketball court. But in the sense that some think there’s a chemistry issue there. That Westbrook is trying to assert himself as the team’s alpha and take the big shots and big moments from Durant.
“We butt heads just like any other players because we are both competitive, we both want to go at it, we both have ideas,” Durant said. “That’s going to happen. But I support him 100 percent. Of course, I hated when people were saying the stuff they were saying, and he hated it as well. I didn’t want it to get to his head. I hate when people try to creep into the group and try to break things up.
“I enjoy playing with Russell so much. I hope he understands that, and I’m sure he does. I’m looking forward to next season already. The last thing I’ve been worrying about is what people say about Russ, and I’m sure that’s the last thing he’s worrying about as well.”
Durant was willing to take that even a little bit further too. Not just that he likes playing with Westbrook, but that he sees Westbrook as his point guard, as his guy. “I don’t want any other point guard,” Durant said. “He’s perfect for us, the type of guy he is, the type of player he is, the type of teammate he is. We’re all competitive, especially me and him. We get the best of each other in practice every day, and we want to go at each other and make each other better. We are going to have disagreements. That’s what all good players on good teams do.”
Durant even addressed in another interview the supposed Kendrick Perkins-Westbrook rift, and gave the same answer, noting that he’s argued with Perkins before too. “Yeah, I’ve had arguments with Kendrick in the locker room. I’ve had arguments with BJ Mullens in the locker room,” Durant told SI.com. “We’re not going to agree every time. Russ would’ve maybe said, ‘Perk, you should’ve ducked inside the lane and I’d have hit you for a better pass,’ and Perk was like, ‘Maybe I thought about this, maybe I thought about that.’ So we’re not going to always agree. We’re going to always have arguments, but it’s nothing to the point of where guys are going to walk out of that locker room and say, ‘Nah, I don’t like him.’ We’re all going to get it together and we’re all going to figure it out right on the spot. That’s what happens in a group. That’s what makes a group great. Every team goes through it.
“I forgot all about it. It’s over with. It’s done. Everybody enjoys each other’s company. We enjoy having those disagreements, because we know we’re going to get better from it. To be honest with you, I forgot all about it.”
Now, of course there’s the potential that Durant is just kind of doing the normal Durant thing and saying all the right things. It’s not like Durant would ever say, “You know, I don’t really like Russ too much. We don’t get along and he hogs the ball too much.” But we kind of have to take Durant’s comments at face value. He’s said it more than once — he wants Westbrook to be his point guard. He likes Westbrook as his point guard. Could he be lying? Sure. I’m taking KD at his word on it. He’s never given me a reason to doubt it yet.
For me, the most interesting quote from KD was, "I’ve had arguments with BJ Mullens in the locker room." Wonder what they were arguing about? Did KD not put enough cash on the Kohl’s gift card?

OrangeJuiceJonesParticipantI’ve heard that B.J Mullens thinks his head is symmetrical. When people say otherwise, he gets extremely offended.

Bmore_DCParticipantDurant is right…all the critics talk about Westbrook but the dude is like 21 years old and already a top 5 PG in the league! what more do you want? he got a little selfish but if he thought he had the looks then i cant really hate on that!
Frustration…probably because BJ has yet to prove hes an NBA caliber big-man…so much upside tho IMO

RUDEBOY_ParticipantIf Durant can get Perkins to be on the same page as him..The Thunder will have it made…Perkins and Westbrook fought alot after he came over in the trade..Word has it that Perkins told Westbrook,he was no Rajon Rondo…And Perk wasnt happy with Westbrook’s shoot 1st mentality…

apb540ParticipantAs Perkins should of been. He came from the definition of a team so the dude knows what it takes to win. All Westbrook needs to do is learn how to pick his spots and he will be just fine. I was watching a lil 1992 Bulls the other day on NBA TV and noticed that sometimes Scottie Pippen tried to over-do-it a la Westbrook, but he knew when to get the ball to Jordan in the second half.

aamir543ParticipantDurnat is all we want Lebron to be, a great person, character, teamate, and instead of BSing every question asked, he answers it honestly, and frankly. (Like when he called Chris Bosh a "fake tough guy".)

FastAndFuriousParticipantDurant knows how good Westbrook can be, even tho he’s already a top 5 PG he can still get better, and he also knows how good the Thunder can be if him and Westbrook both reach their potential along with the other young guys…..championship after championship after championship….Dynasty

MJ FOR LIFE 23ParticipantTo average 20 and 8 in a season while 24 and 7 in the playoffs but still get called a ball hog, that really tells something about Westbrook’s skill and potential. His jumpshot is much improved than from the past seasons. All he needs to do is just pick the right time to shoot and feed the ball to Durant when he’s on shooting mode, and not overdo it. He’s still a bit reckless but in time he will be able to control himself. They already made it to the Conference Finals so they’re definitely hungry to win a championship.

TRC1991Participantive said it for a year straight, start harden and give him 35-38 minutes a game and this team is the best in the WC
btw he avg. 26.7 mpg this past year … shaking my f ucking head

hooverballParticipant26.7 minutes a game isnt too bad for a sophmore playing on a top team….this next year they will do exactly what you are saying and they will be the best in the west.
Mabe they should ship out sefolosha for a shooter off the bench with Harden starting?
He isn’t the greatest overal player but Martel Webster can shoot the lights out…bet Minnesota would jump at giving him up for a proven SG. Probaly could get a draft pick too or mabe another guy they like as an end of the bench guy like Toliver.

Anton123ParticipantIgnore the numbers, if you watched the playoffs, Westbrook was the definition of a ball hog, he dribbled the ball up the court ad jacked up silly shots on numerous occasions, there were really a lot of times when the Thunder didn’t make a single pass in an attack, it looked pretty ugly

Anton123ParticipantI am an OKC fan, but I hated that Westbrook got into the all-star game this year over Nash, IMO, Nash deserves it so much more, he had a great year (his per36 assist average was actually the best in his career – 12.3) with a respectable 15ppg, if I could trade Steve Nash for Westbrook I’d do it any day as the Thunder, screw the fact that he’s 36 years of age, I believe OKC would win a championship with him.

simonkildayParticipantWestbrook’s shot selection and decision making throughout the course of the playoffs was horrendous. The Thunder had numerous possessions where the ball only touched his hands, and it seemed as if he was oblivious to the fact that he had the greatest scorer in the world on his team. This is called tunnel vision in basketball. I like his aggressive mentality; with his speed and quickness, he should be putting pressure on the defense and trying to get to the rim every time. Scotty Brooks would be stupid to tell him otherwise. However, he will often try to force shots over double teams even when his teammates are open, and this is the part of the game he needs to learn going forward. Being aggressive doesn’t mean excluding your teammates. He also needs to develop better chemistry with Durant; even when Durant was receiving the ball, often he was not in a good position to score. A lot this falls on the point guard, although I thought Durant could have done a better job coming tighter off of screens. But in the NBA, everything happens in a split second, and it is a point guard’s job to recognize when his scorer is open and in a position to catch and make a move. A lot of times Westbrook would be too late with the pass, and Durant would lose his advantageous position by the time he received the ball. Other times, he would look at Durant, hesitate, then put his head down and make a reckless charge toward the basket.
All that being said, I think it is a little ridiculous that people are calling for the Thunder to actively look to trade Westbrook. Being named second team all NBA is no small feat, and in Westbrook’s case, it was not unwarranted. He had a tremendous season, and is the prototype of the new breed of point guard that is beginning to take over the league, along with Derrick Rose and John Wall. He is as competitive as they come and plays hard all 48 minutes. He has areas of the game which he can improve, but he is still 22 years old, and it is not unreasonable to think that in the coming years he can harness his aggressive mentality and improve upon picking his spots to attack. I don’t believe his play in the postseason was a result of an alpha dog struggle with Durant; that is just pure speculation from media members trying to create a good storyline. I don’t believe he is selfish either, but rather his aggressiveness and desire to win just manifested itself in some bad decisions.
I don’t believe the Thunder should be shopping Westbrook, but that is not to say he is untouchable. If the right offer comes along, i.e. Chris Paul is involved, then they should definitely entertain it. Ultimately, there is no question that it is Kevin Durant’s team, and the Thunder offense should revolve around making sure that he gets the ball. For him to go nine minutes in the fourth quarter without taking a shot, as was the case in one of the Memphis games, is just downright unacceptable, and falls on the shoulders of the point guard. Westbrook needs to buy into this, and he can do so without sacrificing a whole lot. He can still be a huge factor in the Thunder’s success, but he needs to see the whole floor and look to Durant before looking for his own shots. His game doesn’t need and overhaul, just some minor tweaks. Durant is absolutely right to stand by his point guard and friend, from both a personal and basketball perspective. The Thunder can win with Westbrook, as long as he makes these minor adjustments. But if he doesn’t within the next year or two, then it is safe to say that his bad habits are ingrained in him and the Thunder should move him for a true point guard.

IndianaBasketballParticipantPerkins should’ve gotten on Westbrook and Westbrook should’ve listened. Perkins comes from a winning team and understands what it means to play a TEAM game and sacrifice.
Nobody told Westbrook not to shoot… They’re just telling him to slow down a little, make better decisions with the ball and know that KD is the go-to player on the team. Once, Westbrook figures that out, I don’t think he’ll hear the criticism.
