The crys were,"Carmello, Carmello is now a New York Knick!".  Followed by endless updates on  different social networks suggesting  how this new power will be able to take the east by storm now and win a ship.Untill the playoffs…where team depth lead to an early exit and exposed a major flaw in this new power. The "Other hot topic of the town" was bought to the forefront by the media.Did the knicks give up to much talent for mello? Booed 2008 draftee Danilo had become a fan favorite, a serious 3 point threat and mismatch due to his size, the Felton and Stat show had just begun Ray was hitting big shots helping lead a team to its first playoffberth in years,Wilson was the workhorse,Mozgov the body, why give up All young players on an Above 500 team just for Carmello when you can sign him at the end of the year?

I think the knicks did a great job lockout proofing a deal with Carmello. They can now plan ahead building there team knowing they have carmello on board  and not have to worry about losing fans because of lock out ,they now have a bonafide superstar that a automatically bring new fans filling seats no matter when a new NBA season begins.

How do you all feel about the trade now?

I’m assuming they weren’t hurting for fans in the first place, but I guess every penny counts.

From a basketball perspective, I didn’t like the deal, then and now.  The Knicks already had a top 5 offense at before the deal for Melo, and, while Melo could help improve that, the law of diminishing returns makes it unlikely for his presence to radically improve their offense.  An NBA offense is not equal to the sum of its parts; it is dependent on teamwork, as well as individual brilliance.  Melo’s isolation game can help the Knicks only so much because isolations plays are, in general, less efficient than other methods of generating offense, and one less iso by Melo is one less pick and roll by Amare Stoudemire, and Melo’s presence doesn’t particularly help a Stoudemire pick ‘n roll, while neither does Amare’s presence especially help a Melo isolation.

Don’t get me wrong; I think Melo’s presence will help the Knicks offense improve overall, but not enough to make them contenders without another significant change to the team.  The Knicks were every bit as bad on defense last year as they were good on offense, which is how they were able to be only average despite having an elite offense, and Melo probably will only hurt the Knicks defense.

I predict that the Knicks will not play a home playoff game next year (even if the lockout is averted), which will be quite disappointing for a team that traded away most of its up and coming talent to attempt to improve in the short term.

Same way I felt about it at the time of the trade.

Both teams are in their own paths, the Knicks trying to form their own big three, and the Nuggets trying to assemble quality players and just trying to win. If the Nuggets can keep JR Smith and Nene(or at least Nene) then I believe that their future is even brighter. The one dimension that will be gone is the fac thtat Felton could hit threes and Miller can’t but in the big scheme of things, that doesn’t really matter at all. Jordan Hamilton is a promising young fellow, and Faried is a rebounding beast, and a sure thing in my mind(a sure role player that is). If they can get Danillo to 19 points per game and hitting 38% of his threes, and get Ty Lawson to 16 and 8 while making his Jumpshot more consistant, the future is bright, they could be a team to watch out for, but they MUST resign Nene, and Smith would just be icing on the cake. And if Wilson Chandler continues to improve, than I really don’t see what is stopping them from being a top 4 team in the West.

On the Nuggets side, all the chips are in on D Will, CP3, or Dwight signing there. If ANY one of the three sign, than I would see this whole charade as a success, regardless of the result, cause any time you have the opportunity to get three of the best players in the game, you have to jump on it. But if they don’t get one of the three, we have a serious problem, cause by 2013 or 2014, you could be looking at a washed up Chauncey Buillups, an ailing Stoudemire, a ball hog defense ignoring star in Anthony, and a hustle guy but still just a role player in Landry Fields. That is all they might have, but in the end, I think it’ll benefit both teams, but this collective bargaining agreement will really either make or break the Knicks in the big scheme of things.

As a nets fan I felt, that we never really had a chance to get melo(im glad, since he’s all offense no defense) so with that being said I think

    1. Nets tried to force the knicks to give up more pieces then necessary, giving up Gallo,Chandler,Felton, Mozgov(their basic core) for an offensive minded player  who plays no defense turning the knicks into a turmoil(fields game went down after trade as well). Bright spot they also get Billups(getting old but still effective)

    2. Denver obtained the best possible deal they could have gotten obtaining the players above, flipping felton for Andre miller(a great underated mentor for lawson), losing chandler to china though, and having Gallo(Talks about him posisbly be the build around player..is he good enough?..answer soon to come..whenever the damn lockout ends).

    3. Nets- lose out on melo deal and get Deron Williams instead but give up some 1st round picks as well as 3rd pick in derrick favors(who has potential(key word) to become a very good player). Nets now have to take on the stress that denver and utah had in finding a way to keep D will in brookyln, as lockout continues its looking dim each day, unless they suprise everyone. but atleast they got rid of devin harris haha

    4. Utah- Got rid of D-will and nabbed a potential good player Derrick Favors, picked up kanter(nets pick), but got an inconsistant chucker in devin harris

    Conclusion

    – Denver- got possibly the best deal they could have gotten for melo, overachieved in making the playoffs, and future may look even brighter if Gallo,Lawson,Nene(if he stays).. but lack of true star power and lose of some players will come back to haunt them

Utah- got some good potential bigs, but also created a log jam since they now have favors, milsap, kanter, and Jefferson and have an inconsistant pg in d-harris who is not a true pg and more of a chucker.. Coach Corbin has a lot of thought to put into this one

Knicks- tore apart a working system to get a star, they finished with a below .500 record with melo and could have missed the playoffs if the east was stronger. Even if a star pg comes to NY after this season, they will still be a weak defensive team which counts in the playoffs more then regular season.

Nets- gave away a potential good player, away for a star pg, which is great in theory until you realize he may be gone after this season(if there is one), and your left with nothing, then a potential second chance to win the F@@KIN DISGRACE OF THE NBA AWARD. Sad era to be nets fan if this happens, to think about 9 years ago we were in the finals 2 years in a row,,smh

I just now thought of how good of a place it would be for Dwight to go to the Nuggets

    Pg-Ty Lawson

    Sg-Aaron Affalo

    Sf-Dinilo Gallinari

    Pf-Nene

    C-Dwight freakin Howard

i liked the deal and still do…

it can attract free agents to go to the knicks and now NY actually has a chance to play for more then just a playoff spot in the lowly east… possibly ecf in the futre? nba finals if they vastly and rapidly improve??? pretty unlikely for the nba finals

    however…

im not sure what there cap situation is… but they desperatley need depth at this point, and hope my maine men S.TA.T. and mr. big shot are gnna be healthy…

and i hope im not the only one who thinks amare should add a back to the basket game…

his face up game seems kinda predictable to me tho no one can really stop it…

I still see why both side did it and it makes sense.

Knicks angle:  To win a championship in the league today you need multiple legit superstars or players who can come up at times and play like superstars.  To compete with the Heat, the Knicks targeted superstars to compete with that firepower which you would assume you would need to take out the Heat in the future.

Nuggets:  Probably losing Melo regardless.  Get the most you can for it which is certainly what they did.  Pretty much brought in a whole nother lineup of starters.  Pick and choose who to keep and who to trade to improve the squad.
