JunkYardDogParticipantJust to talk about an issue towards spain squad : fiba rules allows each international team to have one and only naturalized player…
Spain has serge ibaka (who played in that country when he was younger) who fills a need as an inside force. Not only defensive with his block shooting ability (even more important in fiba basket due to the rules and physical way of playing inside), but also offensive with his very much improving jump shoot and his rebounding ability. That give them a perfect trio (gasol marc and pau, ibaka) complementary and very high (you can also add to them fran vazquez and felipe reyes at 4). The best paint in international basket.
But, here is the issue, spain has also nikola mirotic… who killed everybody during youth internatioonal tournament. Mirotic is the next big thing in europe reminding us players like dejan bodiroga, and therefore he fills a big need for spain : spot 3. Cause at 3 spain has victor claver (young and talented) and san emeterio (very effective underrated young man). But those 2 forwards are unproven in international battles and don’t possess the upside mirotic represents.
As the choice seems easy, for now, it will be very difficult for spain to choose between mirotic and ibaka to be part of the teem in years to come. Are they going to chose size : playing with three guards (rubio navarro fernadez llull sada calderon) and two centers (the gasols and/or ibaka vazquez), which seems to be the choice right now. Or are they going to open their roster to the super talented combo forward mirotic to have a real high scoring creating SF ?
What is the best choice for them ? and what would be yours ?

lbj_6If this was applied to france my team will be doomed lol! Joakim Noah maybe chosed American nationality. Ali Traoré (newly Lokomotiv kuban player) (parents malian of origin), tony parker born in belgium (but no problem for playing in france). Our soccer team would be very weakened if this law applied for them but that’s not possible.

2quick4uParticipanthi, first of all mirotic is not a SF, he is a PF. sure he can shoot the ball pretty well but still he is clearly a PF.
like you say, right now there’s no debate, ibaka is clearly the only option and it will remain like this for at least 3 more years and then will see how mirotic develops and what the national team needs.
pau gasol has said several times that it is very likely he retires after the 2012 olimpic games from the national team so if that happens spain is gonna need another inside force to join marc.
so again, I think ibaka is the only option for spain in the next years, specially if pau retires next year, and then we’ll have to wait and see how good mirotic really is at the next level.

J-BoParticipantHere in Spain there isn’t any debate at all. Ibaka is way better than Mirotic right now.

JunkYardDogParticipantright now of course…
but the question will be raised in the next 3 years cause a special talent like mirotic can’t be ignored.

J-BoParticipantWell in the next 3 years i think that Ibaka will be even better than now. Mirotic is a nice basketball player, but Ibaka gives you a lot of shot blocks, altered shots, rebounds, defense… to me is more dificult to find Ibakas than Mirotics in the spanish team.
Right now Ibaka is a force in the paint versus Australia, he’s blocking every single shot in the paint and Spain is being lethal at the fastbreak.
