We all know plenty of cases where a player in college has had to make the transition in the NBA from SF to SG, or from SG to PG.  What about some guys who played PG in college but had to play more SF in the league.  Obviously they are very skilled players to be able to play either position and do it effectively.

The first two that come to mind are guys I grew up watching and saw them play numerous games.

    Jalen Rose and Walt Williams.

For his career at Michigan, Rose avg 17.5ppg, 4.7rpg, 3.9apg.  In the NBA he played 13 seasons, mostly at SF and SG and avg 14.3ppg, 3.8apg, 3.5rpg

For his career at Maryland, Williams avg 16.2ppg, 4.6rpg, and 3.9apg (avg nearly 27ppg as a senior)

Both of these guys were incredibly entertaining to watch in college and were rarities being 6’8" point guards.

If there are any of your favorite players who had the versatility to play from PG, SG, to SF (it doesnt matter which order) in the college and pro ranks, shout them out here.

Didn’t Iguodala and Walton play on the same team ? How could they both be playing point? And I never would have guessed Ronnie Brewer played PG at Arkansas. T-Will has been very unsuccessful playing off the ball in the pros and has become a ball stopper because he was so used to being the play maker, I hope he puts it together, he reminds me of a JR Smith minus the shooting ability.

Brandon Roy would be another one of these guys.

Steve Smith was compared to Magic Johnson at Michigan State, playing 4 years and ending up being the 5th pick in the 1991 draft. He averaged 18.5 ppg, 6.1 rpg and 3.7 apg, he is listed on basketball-reference as being 6’7, though I remember him being listed as 6’8 for most of his career. He definitely played PG in college, though was more of an SG/SF in the NBA. Smitty played really well on the Heat, Hawks and Trail Blazers, making one All-Star game during his career. He won a championship playing sparingly for the Spurs in 2003.

I do not remember Brandon playing much point at UW, much like Iguodala and Walton pretty much didn’t. Iggy and Luke only played one of Iggy’s two years together, and in Iguodala’s last year he did average 4.9 apg. They all definitely could pass well, and may have brought the ball up at times, but I never really thought of any of them as PG’s. T-Will definitely was a point forward, he is the only one I remember actually being a sort of PG. Never really thought of Brewer as a PG, though he is a pretty awesome athlete and probably brought the ball up at times in college. Couple others I can think of are Joe Johnson and Jamal Crawford, who were both considered PG’s in college.

A couple really famous point forwards, who I believe were PG’s in college, were Paul Pressey and Scottie Pippen. Both of them were classic point forwards who brought the ball up at times during their career and were great distributors as taller players. Lamar Odom plays that role at times on the Lakers, and was constantly compared to Magic as a younger HS player. Never really considered LO a PG at Rhode Island or in the NBA, but he is a solid point forward at times, that is for sure.

The O.P. didn’t ask whether they played PG, just that they had the versatility to play PG,Sg, orSF. Just as guys like Walton and Iggy did. Also Tyler Smith for Tennessee and Jeff Green at Georgetown. And yes, Brewer played PG at times for the razorbacks.

the op kinda asks 2 questions. FIrst it says at the top "college pg’s who played sf in the nba" then asks at the end "shout out versatile players who could play different positions." So my bad for correcting you.

let me clarify my post guys, I am looking for guys who have played some of all 3 positions, whether in college or pros.  I never saw Iggy play at Zona and only saw a game or two for Luke, never seen him play anything but forward…did he play some 1 or 2 at some point either in college or pro?

No, Walton pretty much played forward, but he was an initiator/facilitator in the half court. 6.3 assists sophmore year. Most of those guys didn’t actually run a lot of minutes at the multiple poistions. Your question was just mildly confusing. I was just assuming point forward’s or half court point forwards also applied.

yes, Reke is another one of those guys, also T-Will played point in the summer league last year because I guess the Nets were trying to see if they could get some minutes out of him there, I dont think he showed very much or in preseason and was traded shortly after…I thought Grant Hill was going to play a lot of PG, he definitely was a point forward though….which brings to mind…anyone remember the original Point Forward….Paul Pressey?

I didnt see Roy at UW, bet he was a treat, he is a guy who likes to play the point and I like how in the playoffs Nate got some minutes out of him there, he is a very smart player.

question….does anyone think Harden can play some serious minutes at point?

I personally doubt he can pull any meaningful minutes at the one. Not the quite the ballhandler to be a main point. He’s best suited as a secondary ballhandler who makes smart decisions beside of a shoot first erratic pg like Westbrook. Similar to Aaron McKie and A.I.

I used to love Paul Pressey’s game, he was another one of my favorite players for a period.  Anthony Tucker at Wake was another Point Forward, he was the point forward on a monster squad that included Randolph Childress, Rodney Rogers, Chris King (the guy who discovered Timmy-D), he was highly touted Mickey-D AA who transferred from Georgetown if I remember correctly…didnt make it in the NBA though.

I didnt catch Joe Johnson at Ark, (I was absent from the basketball seen for a number of years) but I know he can play some point now in the league.  His idol was Magic Johnson…but then again all the guys we mentioned probably felt the same way about Magic.  Pippen WANTED to be a PG in the league.  Penny is another guy who could play those spots but he was at his best at PG.

Scottie IMO was the best point forward of all time. To me, there are a lot of guys nowadays who are reffered to as point forward because they can handle the ball and rack up assists. It takes more than that IMO. You need to actually be able to read the defense, control tempo, make your teammates better. Very few of these so called point forwards these days can honestly do that. Pippen was one of the very few who can do that. BJ for as good at playmaking and making others better, even he is fairly poor at recognizing and controling the tempo. Turks in 08 looked pretty legit point forward like.

I made a thread here a few months back about the Magic comparisons.  There were a lot…but in terms of coming close…as far as being able to get minutes at any of the 5 positions, IMO its Odom.  As far as the best player, it would have to be Lebron.  The best at playing the point, Penny.  When I saw close I mean CLOSEST as compared to anyone else…not close to Magic…..no one has been remotely close.

+1 surve. No one has ever come close, and no one ever will. Like I said, tons of guys have parts of the things that made a true point out of Magic, but no player has been able to bring every piece to the table. Honestly, the closest comparison to Magic for me wouldn’t be ODOM as he’s just too poor of a decision maker, but Magic’s old rival, Larry Legend.

oh no, in terms of skill, there arent too many things if ANY that Odom can do better than Magic could, maybe not even rebound, if Magic had a lot of minutes inside.  Magic was a good rebounder and I just think his shooting was underrated, I seen him get hot too many times from behind the arc.  Odom is a guy who has that versatility to play all…because honestly I dont know anyone else who could play PG and Center.  Magic proved that he would be a good player even at center….he had a mean sky-hook too!  Another guy who was seen to have that type of versatility but proved otherwise was Tim Thomas.

all of the guys we are naming are VERSATILE…but versatility does not mean they come close to Magic in how they could effect the game.  Lebron is great in his own way, but if he truly would be effective playing PG…I think the Heat would have at least experimented with it this year.  J-Rose and the Wizard were great in college, but once again, they were more score first guys, just tall for point guards.  Then you had other comparisons, like Livingston, Owens, Manning, Liberty, Scott, Sun Yue, etc….I mean at a point the comparions just become ridiculous.  Anyone who was over 6’6" and could dribble basically…but I havent heard many of those comparisons in a while, thankfully.

Obviously some of you guys look at stats and highlights only. Iggy, Roy, Walton, Tyler Smith or Ronnie Brewer ever ran point for their respective teams! They attack from wings and make plays, that doesn’t make them points. Just guys 6’6 or better who are above avg ball handlers and/or passers.

Julius Hodge was another versatile guy.

Troc, you cleary need to reread some earlier posts where we clearly said those guys were just versatile and could play point. And I disagree with you sir, Garcia did in fact have moments of point play at louisville whether he was a shooter or not.

Julius Hodge was another versatile guy.

Ronnie Brewer played alot of PG at Arkansas. He’s a reasonably good ball-handler in the NBA when he decides to show it too.

Julius Hodge played alot of PG, especially his Sr. year. He never really saw minutes in the pros though.

Tayshaun Prince was mostly a wing at Kentucky, but I do remember him playing a little PG too.

Thank you JNixon, I was pretty sure Brewer ran a lot of pg. Part of the reason broadcasters compared him to Joe Johnson on draft night.(Man was that comparison WAY off)

I too remember Tayshaun getting a little burn at the point. If I’m not mistaken, he even ran a litte PF.

I was going to make that point too. The next player experimenting the transition from PG to SG/SF, although right now it’s a reach to say he’ll have J-Rose or Walt Williams’ level, will be Iman Shumpert. I think it’s more of a forced reconversion cuz we all saw that he couldn’t drive a team efficiently at Georgia Tech.

T-Mac!  A lifelong SG/SF who has resurfaced in Detroit as a PG!

forgot about Ron Harper who I seem to remember was a forward in college, then with the Cavaliers was a high scoring SG, then with the Bulls and Lakers was the PG.

Yeah. I remember Ime Udoka was actually listed as a pg/sf around draft time. VERY UNSUCCESSFULL.

IMO, Zoran was actually a pretty decent guy, just never really got a chance. I remember always wondering why he never really amounted to much. Never like Jiri, and Marko was expected to be a lot better than he was. IMO, he was actually vest suited as a forward as he had good passing and ballhandling, but not quite PG level. At the 3 he was able to exploit those skills a little better. Just think, he was expected to be one of the players brought in to keep K.G. happy in Minny lmao.

I remember Roger Mason played PG at UVA.  I like Jaric’s game.

Roger Mason is a good call. He used to be a great ball-handler, and he was fairly quick too. He played at Virginia back when I 1st started watching basketball. Him and Donald Hand was a good backcourt

He was definitely a damn good defender. I believe this sight actually had him listed as Eric Snow comparison.
