highflyer0ParticipantI understand that this will probably get me a lot of negs(although points don’t matter much to me) but I feel like I have to get this off my chest. I honestly can not stand John Calipari. In every interview I watch of him, I take whatever he says with a grain of salt, because I believe he’s a liar. He got in trouble at both UMASS and Memphis and left right after it happened. He didnt mess up once but twice, and although there may not be evidence, he is most likely going to be caught cheating at Kentucky within the next few years. There was already trouble with the grades of players last year. I understand that he is a good coach but he is by no means a great one. Every year he gets the top point guard along with other five-star players and can not get to the championship game. I know that those players only stay one year but I have a feeling Coach K would do a little bit better with those same athletes as would other coaches. He seems very slimy and downright annoying in my opinion and I always root against his team because I truly believe he has been and always will be a crook. I’m am extremely sorry for this rant but I’m tired of hearing praise for Calipari. I know he’s not the only one that has cheated but he just keeps getting away with it and he doesn’t deserve to coach the University of Kentucky.

llperezi think he just has lots of connections that do his dirty work. Guys who pull the kids aside and maybe give them phone numbers to call or whatever if they need some cash or something. Calipari has lots of friends and connections im sure. He probably just turns a blind eye more then anything. Obviously he knows how to relate to kids and tell them what they want to hear and his resume of guys getting drafted is gonna open eyes as well.
But i think theres other coaches doing that stuff too. Cal is just better at it. I dont get too mad. I honestly think the sec in general in both football and basketball probably lets things go under the table more then any other conference.

TimbosliceParticipantIt almost hurts me to say this, since I’ve been a die-hard wildcat fan since I was a toddler, but I have to agree with certain points of your rant. While I wouldn’t say he’s slimy and a crook, the way he gets all these top shelf recruits makes people wonder what’s going on behind the scenes, even those in the big blue nation. I really hope nothing happens as far as violations leading to probation or other sanctions. For right now I, along with the rest of the state, am enjoying the teams success as we seem to be back at the level we were when pitino left. Tubby was pretty mediocre and we don’t even bring up the short lived Billy Gillespie era. I’m sure alot of people share your disdain for coach Cal, however I love what he’s been doing with our team and hope he can keep it up in a clean manner.

highflyer0ParticipantI have nothing against the fans of Kentucky as they are very knowledgable and loyal. However, the current situation reminds me a lot of the Pete Carroll era with USC football and we all know how that ended…

NJHooper95Participant@HighFlyer, I agree Cal is not a great coach, he is good but not great. I do believe he is a great recruiter, but not a great coach. The way he lost to Kansas speaks loudly about his x’s and o’s. That game should not have be lost. Cal brings in great recuits, and I will say they do only stay a year and thats part of the problem. But the other part is him he gets out coach and thats why he cannot win the big one with all that talent.
He puts guys in the pros, even some that should not go (Daniel Orton) so the big-time guys will continue to flock to Lexington.

Bmore_DCParticipantYea ive been on this subject for awhile now too…good post.
I mean you have to wonder what is going on with this. Im pretty sure he is doing what most other big schools do, its just that hes the best at doing so. It seems he uses this "1-and-done" to his advantage in recruiting top players. And now its a snowball effect because all he has to say is he coached Derrick Rose, Wall, Tyreke, Cousins etc. He also set the record for most players picked in the first. His program is a direct funnel into the NBA, coaches and GMs know this. Ill even admit that im looking at ANYBODY Calipari recruits. Call him a slime ball, call him shady…but he is only a microcosm of what college sports (especially the SEC) has become.

Scottoant93ParticipantThis is a little out of topic but why does calipari always get guards who lack a jumpshot(tyreke evans, rose, wall, knight was pretty good with his jumpshot though)
Alright now back on topic, I don’t dislike him, but I know he does something under the table to get players, and he always disappears when the program caught and coaches somewhere else to avoid punishment. Maybe one day he will get caught but til then he is going to keep getting top recruits and he’s at kentucky now, one of if not the top jobs in college basketball so if he blows this there is nothing but going down from here. I mean where will he coach next considering all the top schools have had there coaches from ages(Coach K duke, Roy Williams UNC, etc). Time will tell though

jaysmith1987ParticipantCalipari is one of the best coaches in college hands down he constantly puts players in the pros and ready to contribute. Look at guys like Joey Dorsey, Josh Harellson, Eric Bledsoe, and Chris Douglas Roberts, these guys werent all americans Calipari developed them and look at the coaching job he did last year getting UK to the final four with a far less superior team than the year before. Deandre Liggins was turned into a pro by calipari as well. He just now is starting to get the overall classes that rival duke and unc. If you wanna talk overated coaches just go to unc and duke count up all the all americans and how successful they were in the nba. Coach K and Coach williams turn superstar talents into role players while Calapari demands greatness from all his players. Last thing recruits come play for calipari not because he puts players in the nba but he puts really good players into the nba.

Scottoant93Participant^^^^ yeah but has he personally been punished got a violation at memphis and vacated wins and final four, championship appearances(who the players pay), and for calipari himself a nice promotion to kentucky one of the top jobs in the country, they weren’t that good then but still did you expect them to stay down forever

inukawaii8Participanti disagree with you jaysmith… when did joey dorsey become a good player in the nba? i give you that he got harrellson drafted… but all of the players who came out of his schools were already highly rated players out of hs, and most ppl knew they were gonna go to nba anyways.. CDR was def a top 100 recruits.. eric bledsoe, i remember when he came out of hs, ppl said he could start in any team but he chose to backup john wall… did he prepare them for the nba? maybe… but you cant say its bc of the coach, these players are in the nba…
as for why calapari keeps getting these PGs.. this is what i read: coach K and roy williams preach winning and team basketball… ben howland preaches defense… calapari? when recruiting pgs, calapari always tell the players that he will allow them to run and showcase their abilities… i think for any pg, this is the dream scenario… if you are a flashy pg who is quick and have the ability to go to the hole any time you want.. why wouldnt you pass on this opportunity?
but yeah i agree with everyone here… there are probably some shady businesses going on..

mikeyvthedonParticipantBut, that thing about connections is true, he has a lot of them and they like him more than some of the other coaches. Whenever a coach keeps getting top recruits, I always feel something shady is going on, and Calipari is basketball’s version of Nick Saban (Yep, I said it, guess Pete Carroll could be another one as well). One thing though, is that while I know that UMass and Memphis both had Final Four’s stripped from them NOTHING was ever directly connected to Calipari. In this regard, he is much like Pete Carroll (or Gene Chizik at Auburn), in that every violation was due to some other figure besides the head coach.
Now, of course this is totally suspicious, and I am sure he knew what was going on, but nonetheless, he got away with a fairly scot free reputation, while the Universities got the brunt of the bad publicity. Nonetheless, World Wide Wes LOVES John Calipari, and he is just one of the "advisors" who has pointed recruits his way. As he is supposedly getting nor giving compensation from these players, it is considered legal by NCAA standards. I think the NCAA is a pretty crooked business, and that many of these coaches have sold their souls in one way or another.
I think all of these guys are cheaters, John Calipari just looks the part more than others. I think most NCAA rules violations are fairly ridiculous, and I am kind of shocked when coaches get villainized for breaking rules that if you look into them, are pretty marginal and silly. Well, until (or when) John Calipari actually gets caught, he is technically not doing anything wrong. Even so, players love playing in his system, and he actually seems to have a very good relationship with them. Nonetheless, until he wins a championship, he will probably just be the slick haired car salesman who is more style over substance.

TheLastWordParticipantWell regarding this year he called Kanter the #1 pick. Saying any team who passes on him will look back and wince. If Calipari called this correctly, and isn’t just trying to get his player a few million more dollars, I will gain a lot of respect for him.
