TripBzParticipantI like how Selby didn’t back down from BJ, he’s got heart. Jennings looks ready to take that next step as a PG at least on offense, Id like to see him become a better defender tho, Selby was getting past him too easy, even tho its just summer leauge..

FritzParticipantEvery thing I see of Josh Selby outside of his first year at Kansas he looks like an elite prospect. If he truly was hurt most of the year like he said, I dont know how a team did not gamble for this kid in the first round. He has top 10 talent and I feel his game is way mroe suited for the NBA than it was at college. Still would like to see more of his passing ability but I guarantee he will be able to put points on the board at the next level. Maybe not year one, but he needs to keep his head on straight and work hard and who knows how good he could get.

The8thDeadlySinParticipant2 great post right there.. LoL TripBz
"Jennings looks ready to take that next step as a PG. . . Even though it’s just summer league.."
All Jennings did in this video is score… How can you see that he is a better PG? So he took it to some second round pick at a YMCA… Yeah, he is proving he is NBA ready…

RUDEBOY_ParticipantIndividual Battles like these have to the talk of every summer for years.
Both it does nothing to help neither player improves his game…Jennings was near the bottom of the list of starting point guards with fewest assists…
And scouts view Selby as a shooting guard in a point guard’s body..He’s fortunate to have been drafted by a team that gives their draftees a chance to prove what they can offer the team…

omar dayzeParticipanti was just going to say that.. his feel for the game is more suited to the NBA = his feel for the game ends at 1 on 1 play. Thats why he dropped.

omphalosParticipantDoes anyone else find it a little funny that Brandon Jennings is always flashing the "can’t miss" sign when he is a wildly inefficient shooter?
Selby will excel as a Lou Williams type player scoring off the bench, and the Grizzlies have the benefit of Vasquez to pair him with who can play the point; bench back-court of Selby/Vasquez will have great size and scoring ability. I hope Josh finds his way into the rotation.

FritzParticipantSo your saying that High school basketball isnt basketball? You think that playing against an established good NBA point guard in Brandon Jennings is not basketball? I think Selby was hurt last year. I watched everyone of his games at Kansas, and I have seen hours of footage of him outside of Kansas. He rarely if ever showed his ability to attack the basket, or his athleticism for that matter. What he did show is he can shoot the three, which out of high school people did not think he was capable of doing that,
Im saying 8th Deadly sin is I think Kansas was not a great system for him to fit in, and I dont think he was fully healthy. Selby was playing the off guard, when I feel he needs to have to ball in his hands to break down his defender and attack the basket.
All im saying is there is a lot more to this kid then he showed at Kansas and I dont understand how you cant agree. There has to be a reason why this kid did not attack the basket more. Its his calling card. Its why he was drafted, even though it wasn’t even shown at Kansas.
Selby to me isn’t a SG, hes a score first PG. He needs the ball in his hands or else hes just an average catch and pop shooter. Maybe he doesn’t crack the rotation next year, but he will score in the NBA and was worth a higher pick than what he was draft at.

Meditated StatesParticipantNot a PG and not exactly capable of being a fulltime SG either. Is going to get humbled when the season starts. He is a guy who comes off the bench and gives you some scoring at best in the NBA.

The8thDeadlySinParticipantLoL… Pickup style summer league games are not real basketball… And no, HS ball is not real basketball.. Kansas is real basketball though.. Real basketball is fitting into a system and buying into your role as a player in that system… He showed at Kansas that he couldnt do that.

GottaFeedTheFamParticipantI dont know how anyone could take anything away from this clip, its Brandon Jennings and Josh Selby playing no defense on eachother, making long 3’s and doing fat dunks, this tells you nothing about how they have improved their game. What it showed me is that neither take pride in playing anything that resembles defense ( I know its a Melo League game, but still were playing like 3-5ft off eachother), they can do fat dunks that they most likely will never do in the NBA because it exerts to much energy for such small guys to dunk like that, and they can shoot wide open 3s in a pressure free situation. Would have been fun to seem them lay as it seems like they were getting a little competitive with eachother. The best part about the whole video was the end with the dude doing those crazy jumps.

M-DYMESParticipantI like Jennings as a person, but I think he is by far one of the most overrated players in the league.
After he had that 55 pt game people compared him to Iverson lol.
The guy is a lower caliber starting PG in the league. I like his leadership and heart, but he needs to improve in all aspects of his game other than possibly ball handling. I could see him developing into a very good starting PG but never great. Notch below allstar caliber I believe is his ceiling.

Meditated StatesParticipantYou can take nothing from this. Skiles does bottle up Jennings game and the Knicks are a perfect fit I agree. NBA paint play is three times more physical than what we are seeing here. Neither guy is doing much of what we saw regulary in the L outside of maybe shooting, but they playing NO D

FritzParticipantAll Im saying about Selby is that he should of got drafted higher on potential alone. Most the 2nd round picks in last years draft will be out of the league so I am just saying he was worth the gamble at a higher pick.
8th Deadly sin, and yes I dont completely disagree with you, thats why I didn’t give you any negatives, but its a fact that some players thrive in certain systems and are just not very good in others. There is a reason Brandon Jennings struggled in Europe, inexperience obviously, and I dont think his game suits the physical style of play overseas. Selby played last year at SG next to a PG in Tyshawn Taylor who is also a slasher and not much of a distributor. Their games did not complement each other, so Bill Self didnt play them on the floor at once and instead put shooters in that role instead.
I dont blame Selby for not being able to take the starting PG role from a good veteran PG in Tyshawn after missing half the year from an suspension and then more time from an injury. Kansas was trying to win a title and they werent going to put their title hopes in a freshman who missed most of the season.
Someone mentioned earlier how Selby’s game is only suited for 1v1. Well my argument is the NBA is a lot closer to that style then having to go against zone defenses. NBA plays a lot more man on man defense. It gives him better oportunities to break down a single defender and then attack the basket instead of just shooting balls that were swung to him on the perimeter.

GottaFeedTheFamParticipant@Fritz are u serious about this "and I dont think his game suits the physical style of play overseas." The euro game is not even close to as physical as the NBA or college ball in the states is, the euro league is full of floppers, stretch 4’s and 5’s who dont wanna rebound and bang down low, porous defense, and very few players who slash to the hole and absorb contact. Now I believe Brandon didnt fit over there because he wasnt used to the very complicated offensive schemes that preach smart, team oriented ball movement, pick and pop, quick backside cuts to the hole, and outside shooting, none of those things are a strength in his game and primarily the reason he didnt get a lot of playing time and didnt contribute statistically over there.

FritzParticipantFull of stretch 4’s and 5’s? I dont watch a lot of Euroleague, so im certainly not an expert but their are just as many stretch 4’s in the NBA than their is in Europe. Just because the more successful Europe players in the NBA such as Dirk and Bargnani are stretch players does not mean anything about the physicalness of Europe players. You may call them floppers but I find players such as Ginobili and Andres Nocioni as some of the toughest players in the league. Takes balls to put your body in front of freak athletes driving down the lane.
There is certainly more athleticism in the NBA but the euroleague certainly isnt soft. I dont know where you got that impression from but heres an old video of the Euroleague season highlights, certainly doesnt look soft to me.

Heard Selby had 48 but they couldn’t get an official stat line for Jennings

GottaFeedTheFamParticipantCome on Fritz a highlight film is not going to change my opinion, nor should you use it to make an opinion. All of the top Euroleague league teams that I have watched ( I watch their games on NBA TV or sometimes stream them online) start at least one stretch 4 or 5 and sometimes both players are stretch players, the NBA has way less stretch big men and its not even close. The euroleague cant compare in physicality, one of the reasons being the games are officiated much tighter than the NBA games are, and a second being most players over there are much skinnier. smaller, and weaker than their NBA counterparts. Case in point, look at the Euro draft prospects from this years draft almost all of them needed to add muscle and/or toughness to their game: Jonas, Jan, Donatas, Nikola, and Bertans. For every Ginobli and Nocioni there are 5-7 euros who enter the league and need to add strength, toughness, and also become mentally tougher to handle the rigors of the NBA.
I really dont wanna argue with you, but your statement was very inaccurate and seeing as you admitted to not watching a lot of Euroleague ball it makes perfect sense.

iguapops420ParticipantGotta Feed, while you are right about size differences, and bigs playing like 3’s, i must say you are off base on the comment of Europe not being as physical. Sorry, but in Europe, far less fouls are actually called as players get hacked constantly and defenders are allowed to give a little chip to a driving player where in the NBA its called a blocking foul. Not to mention, in today’s NBA, if you’re trying to guard a pg, pretty much all they have to do is drive and it’s almost always a foul. No hand checking allowed.
Doesn’t hurt Fritz’s argument that I’ve read players such as Kobe Bryant,Marcus Williams, and even Timmy D all say they thought that Europe was a more physical league.
