I would like to pose a question to ballplayers here in the forum.   What players did you try to emulate and pattern your game after or who were your favorite players at your position? (2 player max)

Please include the level you played at and your position.

I played HS Varsity at SG.

I was probably the biggest Isiah (J.R. at that time) Rider fan.  I had never seen someone score so many points so effortlessly against top opposition.  At UNLV he almost didnt break a sweat it seemed.

I was a huge Joe Dumars fan as well and tried to pattern my game after his.

I just finished my freshman year, but when i was little I tried to emulate my game after Shaq and Yao.

Last year, I played like Gasol. In one of my leagues, they called me Gasol, also cause I sort fo had a beard.

Now they say I play like Dirk, so….

Personally, I have like the way Sheed played, a big that can shoot from outside, but can also bang inside.

Whats funny is that I patterned my game after Mark Jackson. The way he used to back down defenders and throw up that floater. After that I began to watch Kobe Bryant, the younger version, and didn’t emulate his moves, except his shooting motion. He use to extend his arms the most on his jumpers, still does! I do it now too.

My highest level has been Varsity at PG-PF, I played in small regions so the biggest forwards were 6’3 or 6’4.

Last year was my freshman year and I started for the Freshman team at Power forward.  I also played a lot of center as well.  I’m 6’3 and I have a lot of strength but lack the athleticism of a player playing for a division 1 college.  I am going to try to work through High School so I can make it, but I’m not sure about it yet.  I will play for our JV team this winter and play on the ‘B’ team for Varsity as a sophomore.

Since I play both power forward and center, I will let you know who I resemble my game after for both positions.  Power forward would have to be Jeff Green from the Boston Celtics.  I am an average jump shooter from anywhere on the floor.  I like to put the ball on the floor and get to the rim.  I also play very good defense because of my size advantage over people.

For center, I believe I resemble Andrea Bargnani.  I am a jumpshooter who has good size.  I lack good leaping ability and a good wingspan.  However, I seem to bring down a decent ammount of rebounds.

So my game resembles that of a mixture between Green and Barg.  I like to shoot from anywhere.  I am good from behind the 3-Pt line but I’m not a knock down jump shooter.  I play good defense, both on the perimeter and in the post.  I can guard man to man and in zone defense.  I tend to have a powerful shot, so I hit the backboard a lot.  I don’t have the softest touch, so I can tend to miss some layups around the rim, but my spacing allows me to get my own rebound and keep going up strong until I either end up making it or I get fouled.

High school Varsity I started at SG/SF for 4 years (all years from grade 10-victory lap)

I attempted to emulate my game after anthony parker and shane battier

I knew I wasnt a dynamic scorer or athlete (in fact I could barely touch the rim) but I had a good knowledge of the game, could hit 3’s and defend well….

Watching shane battier and anthony parker play I seen how they carved out roles for themselves in the nba and tried to mimic their style of play to fit my strengths and hide my weaknesses

When I was in high School I played the 4 and the 5. I patten my game after Kenyon Martin at the time. I led the team and owned the school records in blocks(still do) And when Kenyon was healthy he had some really nasty blocks. I had blocks like that. One time I blocked a shot swinging down ball hit my teammate in the face so hard it broke his nose. Not proud of it but that’s how I was rolling..

Juco ball last year I guess it would be Dennis Rodman. Only reason I played was rebounding and defense. Our team was undersized, alot of guards and shooters, I’m only 6’3”, 185 and got big minutes at the 4 and 5 which was very different for me but it got me more action than being a perimeter player.

If you miss open layups, you might as well just quit basketball. I didn’t miss open layups since like 4th grade and I am not even near a good basketball player.

It wasn’t open layups I was missing.  I make all those.  I missed contested layups at times, nobody could really block me, so I tried going up strong a lot and sometimes I tended to go a little too strong.  But a lot of times I could get my own rebound or I’d get fouled so it didn’t matter to me.

Rider and myself are the same age, by the time he was at Vegas I was in college and not balling then except for pickup games so I didnt pattern myself after him WHILE I was playing.  When I was on the team I patterned myself after Dumars.  Just wanted to clear that up.

Another question, if you had a friend or such that you balled with, what Duo did you compare yourself to at the time?

For me, it was me and my cousin.  We would call ourselves Graham and Chaney or we would emulate the Hill’s at Duke (Grant and Thomas).  Isiah and Dumars…that was a given.

lol, not supposed to miss open layups, but I will give you some slack.  but seriously, as a guard, missing an open layup is unacceptable, you would be yanked.  same thing with missing a dunk (although I never could in a game) if you are not sure you are gonna make the dunk, you better lay it up.  that brings to mind that people question Isiah’s leaping ability because he rarely dunked….he explained that he tried to dunk in high school or something once and missed and was so embarrassed it became a mental thing for him.

I used to try to play like Gerry McNamara and Salim Stoudamire back when I played in middle and high school. Now I try to add different parts of Ashton Gibbs and LaceDarius Dunn to my game. I try to not miss free throws and make clutch shots like Gibbs, but I try and have a bunch of different shooting forms and that old school kind of game like Dunn.

The highest level I played was starting for my high school team.

I was a combo forward but started at the PF or C because our school didn’t have much height and I was a high jumper so I could front post players on D because of my vertical.  I’m only 6’2” and it was tough because we went up against guys 6’7”-6’9” although the average starting C in my league was probably 6’4”-6’5”.

I tried pattern my game after young Kevin Garnett ( I playd HS 96-2000) , because he could do it all at the forward postion play 3-5 (which I had to do) and I loved the way he swatted shots out of bounds on D.  When I first started to play I tried to pick up moves from MJ which is why I’ve always had a very effective fade away in the post.

I played well on the aau circuit. I started varsity as a 10th grader. I played one year in a small D-1 college, didnt work out. People say may game was a cross between Scottie and Penny I only 6/2 1/2 but Im long with a good wing span. Scottie was my Idol.  I wanted to be an all-round player so that no one could stop me from impacting the game.

    I still play.
I’m going into a 5th year of highschool for ball.

Almost everyone says I play like Jimmer, and my entire AAU team calls me it.
This is mainly because of my scoring and crazy range.
But i’ll be honest, I’m no Jimmer.

I do try to play like a mixture of him and JJ Redick though, but obviously not as good as those guys.

    High school varsity at pf/c

Birdman (poor mans version) Coming in from middle schooI was starvin marvin skinny with long arms, giant feet, big hands, and 0 post moves, but was a pretty decent passer, and good at grabbing boards and blocking shots.

after putting on muscle and losing some ups around my Senior year due to 2 knee surgeries in my 4 years of high school i tried to play more like Charles Barkley. I worked on ball handling, low post moves and a turnaround jumper.

I’m a jump shooter who can slash a little bit. There’s no need for me to try and model my game after Lebron James and Kevin Durant if I’m a 5’10 160 combo guard.

I was always a giant and earned my playing time as a Center from elementary school up until high school. Around sophomore year, I had to diversify my offensive game though when the competition caught up in height. Today, I’m more of a combo forward at 6"2’/6"3′.

As far as my games goes, I’m a role player that doubles as a lockdown defender (PG’s through C’s) and a pick and pop/jump shooting offensive player. I am very poor at finishing layups (although I have a solid baby jump hook with my right hand) and also a mediocre ballhandler. I do make up for my poor ballhandling skills with change of pace and hesitation moves that are solid enough to mask this fact and the fact that I can only go right. I also happen to have excellent if not great court vision, which allows me to make crisp passes anywhere on the floor (especially into the post, out of the post and to cutters). Rebounding wise, I’m above average but not remarkable. If I had to compare myself to a NBA player, I’d say that I most closely resemble Tayshaun Prince (but more fluid physically and not nearly as gangly) or possibly Chris Singleton depending on how he develops. More specifically, I have Wilson Chandler’s offensive tendancies and skillset; Boris Diaw’s court awareness and passing abilities; and Jared Jefferies’ defensive versatility and length.

As far as the direction I’d like my game to grow in, certainly Carmelo Anthony offensively and Scottie Pippen with everything else.
