aamir543ParticipantIn the midst of a lockout, we are all bored, looking for somthing to do. Well, the other day, I was thinking, that the Dirk-Bird comparision is even further off than we think. Larry could battle down low with the bigs, but he was more of a three, and he could dribble the ball, had good speed, played good D, was a very good rebounder, and created for his teammates. Dirk-great in his own right- is an average defender, a good but not great rebounder, can run the floor well, but nothing to marvel at as far as speed goes. He had better handles when he was younger, playing a point foward role, but not so much. We have to get even more specific than to say that their offensive games are similar. All I can say is that their shooting skills are similar, but other than that and the color of their skin, they are different players. There has never been a player with the skill and size and shooting ability of Dirk, and quite honestly, I don’t think we will see somone like Nowitzki any time soon. He is strong, and a good build that allows him to hold his ground in the post, and from there he does the rest, but if you really think about it, isn’t he sort of a cross between Hakeem and Kobe. I know it seems crazy but think for a moment. Watch the videos at the end of the thread, and see the similarities. I’m not saying he is as good as either one, but what I waw a lot in Hakeem’s mix was a lot fakes, and then going straight up for the jump shot, he takes dribbles, but alot of the time he just goes straight up after an array of fakes. Kobe as we all know dribbles to his spot, gets his feet together quickly, and then fades. What I see in Dirk’s mix is just a lot of "one dribble, two dribble, fade." And also a lot of fakes, let the guy come into you, then fall way back, make him stay straight, and just fallaway and sink it.
Let me know what you guys think, or any suggestions or other comparisions.

rileymcshea3ParticipantHaha Symbol that made me lol but aamir dont you think maybe Dirk is his own new breed of a type of player. Like every type of player has to start some were ,back when Larry Bird was playing on the Celtics you couldnt compare him to any one well maybe thats how Dirk is in todays game .If there was no Dirk wouldnt it be crazy to compare Andrea Bargani to Larry Bird.

frogmanParticipantYeah we dont have to keep fishing for comparisons for players. There has never been anyone in the history of basketball that reminds me of Dirk, he is so unique. BTW I think Dirk’s ball handling is underrated, he has a very good spin move. He just doesnt use it much, hell I wouldn’t put the ball on the floor if I could shoot like Dirk haha.
This being said he is much closer to Larry Bird than some kind of Kobe-Olajuwon hybrid

Bmore_DCParticipantstop comparing players in general…the only time i wanna hear a comparison is when they are coming out in the draft…dirk is his own breed, never been one like him – never will be. he has gotten better each year while adding different weapons (ballhandling, top of the key fade, spin move for a lay up)
