laarethekingsParticipantWas just thinking with the Blazers offering 8.8 million one year deal… that’s a lot of cash! Could a team come in and try to sign him to a offer sheet of 5 years 50 million? I can see this happening becuase when he can play he’s good, it’s just can he play?

doubledribblerParticipantThat was basically the amount that they had to offer him to be able to make him a restricted free agent. I hope no team would offer him that much. That’s a lot of money for a guy that has basically played one season in 4 years, especially when owners are complaining about losing money. Even though he’s a high risk, high reward guy I don’t expect anyone to get a monster contract this year, but do think that he will get a multi-year deal no matter what. Whenever free agency resumes I think he will get some nice security, especially if he is taking care of himself and working hard while there is all this extra down time.

Counting StarsParticipantI see him taking the one-year qualifying offer and hoping that he plays well enough and in enough games to get a large, multi-year deal.

PaulsJayhawksParticipantWith his tendancy to get injured, I’d but looking for a bit less cash over more years. I’d take guaranteed money for say 5 years over risking a 1 year deal and getting hurt for good.

Memphis MadnessParticipantWe will have to see how the new CBA goes. He might be the kind of player who puts a contender over
the top. The Mavs had a lot of success this year with Tyson Chandler, a center who doesn’t really have a refined
post game and is not much of a scorer, but he rebounds, defends, blocks shots, and throws sown some dunks.
This describes a healthy Greg Oden. I think Greg Oden needs to slim down some and pattern his game off of Tyson
Chandler and not try to beef up like Shaq.0 - Posted on: Sun, 07/03/2011 - 9:14am #562386

MkadozaParticipantAnd this is why the owner what protection…. from themselves. This topic kinda put things in perspective, but like in much of the NFL labor negotiations revolve around small market team trying to protect themselves from "losing" money, and while the market size is a considerable factor, it comes down to smaller team owners wanting to ‘normalize’ their earnings, despite the fact regardless of payroll and expenses, you can win through smart drafting and solid management, and winning sells.
Which is the biggest issue with the NBA. Stars sell, talent wins. The Mavs, on paper, even without Butler and Haywood, still had Kidd, Terry, Marion, Chandler and Nowitzki. (Chandlers talent level and size impact may drive Odens price up). But again, since stars sell, owners will overpay for players that COULD be stars. Paying for potential is the biggest cap killer in the league because A. LOTS of players look good in spurts, B. Too many teams are run poorly, and cant resist overpaying, therefore bidding wars happen far too often. The owners could just stop doing it, but that would be inconvient.
So while they fight for lowering everyones paycheck, heres to hoping Greg Oden has ANY kind of career. Because it couldnt have happened to a nicer guy.
To answer the question, yes. Oden will get a large deal.

NJHooper95ParticipantWe all know Big men are difference makers you cant teach size. Brian Zoubek was a walking disaster at one point at Duke but he was 7 Feet and he made it tough on opponents to rebound and score because he was 7Foot.
Oden will get paid big BUCKS like Chandler did, Like Dalembert, Like Jerome James did, because you cant teach size. You need big men, even if they are not very good. Haywood will make almost 8-9 million a year in his contract because he is big and because teams overpay big men.

Johnny ChillBoth are coming off of injuries, Yao hasnt played for 2 years, Oden has had 3 season ending injuries.
Who would you rather take?
Oden, a young defensive player or Yao, a All-Star.

OhCanada-ParticipantOden will get a better offer. If we know one thing it is that the NBA is full of crazy offers when free agency comes along. Many teams have tons of cash and no way to spend it because unrestricted free agents dont wanna pla for them. Grabbing Oden would be like a message to their fans that they are trying to win, and also who knows maybe he can stay somewhat healthy.

ilike.panochasParticipantI will be shocked if this guy gets more money than Marc Gasol this off season. Then again, that dreaded word,”potential” has made GMs loose their jobs.

providencefriars1ParticipantI think Yao is riskier than Oden because Yao had brain surgery a couple years ago to stop him from growing and from what I hear that growing disease really takes a toll on your organs. Also he has had stress fractures in his feet the past few years which is obviously caused by his size.
