Lotto StudParticipantIt really has caught me by surprise, if you have ever took notice, the Celtics have always lacked that TRUE backup PG, that just about every other "contending" team has. It’s like they do nothing to get Rondo a legitimate backup if he goes down. We know West can play the PG spot, but he is not a PG. Carlos Arroyo is 31 years of age & that’s not what I had in mind when I am referring to the 2-headed moster at the 1.
For example……….
- Dallas- Kidd/Barea
- Denver- Lawson/Felton*
- N.O.- Paul/Collison*
- Phoenix- Nash/Brooks
- San Antonio- Parker/Hill*
- Minnesota- Flynn/Rubio*
I’m just trying to figure out why Danny Ainge, still has not found that "guy" to be there with Rondo. It’s really like soon as Rondo goe out it becomes a major drop off in overall play for the team. They do not have that Collison, Barea, Hill, etc. type of backup PG who is going to thrive.

Allen_Iverson_3ParticipantYou can’t include the Flynn/Rubio tandem because, apart from the fact that the TWolves aren’t what you’d call a"contender", they never played a game together since Flynn was traded and Rubio hasn’t played a game yet!
Other than that, I understand the point you’re trying to make.
btw the thing you also don’t mention about Arroyo is that he isn’t a pure PG, he’s more of a player looking to play the 1 on 1 (which he does, or at least used to do, very well) rather than to run his team’s offense correctly.

Lotto StudParticipantI was just using them as an example of a 2-headed monster, although they should have not been apart of the list……but I did put contending in quotes.

Allen_Iverson_3ParticipantNate Robinson, like Arroyo but slightly differently, is also not a typical PG. He’s a shoot first PG and when you have Garnett, Allen and Pierce on the court, I’m not sure that having Nate organizing your offense is the best idea.

B-ball fanParticipantHe really wasn’t that bad as Rondo’s back-up. Yes, he wasn’t a long term solution and he is a terrible defender, but he was good for a few years because he didn’t need to handle the ball and the Cs team defense made up for his deficiencies.
Also, Delonte West could be a solid back-up if they re-sign him. He plays physical defense, doesn’t get called for most of the fouls he commits, and can shoot ok.

NO EZ BUCKETSParticipantI think d-west can fill that role for now. They also just picked up avery bradley’s contract option and he could potentially fill that role very well.

Memphis MadnessParticipanttyga,
In another thread regarding Shannon Brown I thought that he would be good on the Celtics as a backup combo guard. He is strong, active, and very athletic. He can really get the crowd going. The Celtics miss Tony Allen’s energy and aggressiveness. Brown can bring some of that back to Bean Town. T.A. is a lockdown defender, and Brown is not but he can still get after it when he needs to. … Shannon Brown can handle the ball some so they can put him at point guard off the bench or he can play the 2 and attack the basket. Also, when Shannon Brown’s shot is falling he can really get going and put some points on the board.
The Celtics could also use him in a younger, faster lineup with Rondo at point, Shannon Brown at the 2, Avery Bradley at the 3, and Jeff Green and JaJuan Johnson up front.
If they go out and get Shannon Brown and also add a center, either splurge on Samuel Dalembert, take a gamble on Greg Oden, or pick up the cheaper Jeff Foster then the Celtics and the Big Three will have one more run in them. DeAndre Jordan might be the best long-term solution at center and could form a promising young nucleus along with Rondo, Brown, Bradley, Green, and Johnson.
Starters
PG Rajon Rondo
SG Ray Allen
SF Paul Pierce
PF Kevin Garnett
C DeAndre Jordan
Bench
PG Shannon Brown
SG Delonte West
SF Jeff Green
PF JaJuan Johnson
C Jermaine O’Neal
Reserves: Avery Bradley, Carlos Arroyo, E’Twaun Moore

NYK2010ParticipantCeltics could use some offense and obviously need a Center now after moving Perkins.
Backup PG isn’t a huge concern, I like the idea of Shannon Brown he would definately help.

Allen_Iverson_3ParticipantFirst Arroyo is a UFA so Boston has no obligation of keeping him and probably won’t.
Other than that, your plan for Boston is pretty nice/ambitious BUT I don’t think the Celtics have enough cap space to offer deals to both Brown and Jordan who will probably ask for around 5-6 million $ each. This is even more problematic considering the possible new terms of the CBA, with for example a hard cap (the players are refusing it but they might give in considering the money they can lose if the lockout is durable) or something of this type…

HarbingerI think hes a good point gaurd to have on a roster he is a vet in a league where most dont make it past 3 to 4 years. Carlos is not amazing but capable to come off the bench as a pg or make a roster spot. For a team like the heat he was a temp they couldnt get better at the time. As memory serves nate was a great spark off the bench for the celts in the past. The problem was not finding an offensive back up for Peirce after posey left (please dainels could barley stay awake and off the ground in crunch time) and losing a defender in tony to back up allen. They wanted to shake things up and they could risk getting a back up for a young pg in rondo, but it would harder to find a nice YOUNG back up for the ageing ray or pau.l No brainer as we seen home court advantage does matter the celts want to preserve paul and kevin for the playoffs and not pay for a high price back up pg when they have a young rondo .So they used nate to get jeff green.Expect nate to take Erics spot next year off the bench to pair with harden. Now you talk about "two headed monsters" there arent going to be many back courts in the west or league who can stop a duo of Russel and Nate.
Thats only if they dont stop themselves…0 - Posted on: Sat, 07/02/2011 - 10:30am #561856

aamir543ParticipantYeah, for the previous two seasons, the Fisher Farmer duo was monsterous. LOL
This is ridiculous, agreed they need a solid ballhandler behind Rondo because Rondo was gassed at the end of the season, but they dont need some one who can can step in and take over the game. I think they will win 50 next seasone, and get bounced in the 2nd round, that is if there is a season…..

B-ball fanParticipantIf they were to find a back-up pg outside of the organization, I think they should go for an offensive spark who can get dribble penetration into the lane. With the Celtics stars getting older, they could use a player to put pressure on the defense when Rondo is out of the game and create open looks for the Big Three. A guy like J.J. Barea would be great, but some team will overpay him for shooting 42% in the playoffs. I wouldn’t like Shannon Brown because he wouldn’t make much of a difference on offense and is more of a combo guard who is a mediocre shooter. I don’t think he would be a significant upgrade over Delonte West.
