DipoTimeParticipanthow many people think their teams could have had much more productive drafts? i am a rockets fan and i thought for sure that i knew they would go after a defensive minded small forward, a big bodied center, and a solid backup point guard.. instead they draft a power forward who thinks he is a small forward in marcus morris over a defensive minded small forward in kawhi leonard. then they give up a backup center in brad miller, nikola mirotic, and a future first round pick for another power forward and a backup point guard.. then the rockets decide to keep goran dragic and have him and flynn battle for the backup spot.. i know these guys are professionals, but sometimes i really wonder if we as fans could pick our teams players better than they could. no offense to iman shumpert but really? the knicks could have traded down and got him and someone else like selby or jeremy tyler. but instead they reach for shumpert then pay for josh harrellson who could of easily been an invite and probably shouldnt have been drafted. how do you guys think it would go if the fans got to vote? do you think it would be better bc we would go after team needs and not get sucked into the potential of a guy with a 40" vert? or would it be worse bc most people dont know basketball well enough to make the right decisions? i mean, more people know of marcus morris over kawhi leonard so maybe it would still end up like that, but still.. these teams really make you wonder sometimes

SwatLakeCityParticipantLet’s leave the criticism until the season actually starts…if there is a season. You never know Marcus Morris might be a pretty good small forward.
And I actually liked that pick. He’s a smart player who plays hard. He may think he is a small forward, but I agree with him actually. I mean he played that position in college while his twin brother Markeiff played the PF. He’s probably more experienced at that position than you think. Although Leonard brings more defensive intensity than Marcus Morris does, his offensive game is somewhat suspect. With Marcus Morris you get both. A defensive intensity player who has a good offensive game as well and just plays the game hard. Also the Rockets needed someone to replace Shane Battier. Battier was known for his blue-collar approach and tough-nosed style of play. He plays with that veteran leadership. So the Rockets needed someone who could bring that to thier team. Marcus Morris was a Junior at Kansas and all 3 years he participated and played quite well in both conference tournaments and in the tourney. He was a vital part to the Kansas team. Leonard on the other hand is a sophmore who has 1 year of conference and tournament experience. Marcus Morris helped Kansas reach the elite eight this year, and the sweet sixteen the year before. While Leonard only helped San Diego State reach the sweet sixteen this year. Which one do you think plays with more veteran leadership? I think Marcus Morris does. This is no discredit to Leonard. I think he’s a great player, and going to have a good impact with the Spurs. I also think he should have gone in the lottery as a top 10 pick. Meaning that he would not have been around by the time the Rockets selected at 14. Marcus Morris was one of the players that I was considering for the Rockets to take at 14 way before the draft even happened.
And, no having the fans vote for the draft would be dumb. It would take the fun out of it. Sometimes fans do not agree with the actual pick but that doesn’t always mean that it never works out. There were a ton of Utah fans last year who actually booed very loudly the pick of Gordon Hayward (me included) but that pick actually worked out quite well. Sometimes you’ve just got to trust your team’s GM. Now I admit there are some dumb GM’s (cough David Kahn cough). But watching them pick and trying to guess what dumb move he’ll make next is just so much fun, and then having a great laugh about it afterwards. You want to take that away? I’d rather keep it. There are some fans who just watch the draft just to laugh at the dumb moves that some GM’s make. So that’s why having the fan’s vote for the draft would be worse than what it is now.

Memphis MadnessParticipantI don’t really hate the Knicks draft that much. I think Marshon Brooks would have been good on offense at the 2 guard spot, but the USC center that they wanted went the pick before to Philly.
The Knicks need high-level, defensive minded role players. If Shumpert can finish in the paint, play good perimeter defense, and handle the ball some then I like what he will bring.
Josh Harrellson is a good rebounder and seems pretty tough. He should be ok as a backup big man. He improved a lot last year and turned himself into one of the best rebounders. If he continues to improve he will be a good backup power forward.
With Amare, Carmelo, Billups, and Tony Douglas there really aren’t a whole lot of shots to go around anyway. So they picked up two role players who should fit in with their other role players such as Landy Fields, Shawne Williams, Jared Jefffries, and Ronny Turiaf.
I think the Rockets messed up. They got tweener forward Marcus Morris who is more of a power forward and the Rockets have a lot of players there. They needed a small forward and Leonard and Singleton would have been great picks there. Yeah, that is a head scratcher. That team is supposedly acquiring assets but I don’t think most NBA teams values that team assets like Darryl Morey does. Marcus Morris is ok. Jordan Hill might be ok. But, outside of Scola, Kevin Martin, and Kyle Lowry they don’t really have a lot of tradeable assets that they could get a superstar or even just an all-star for. … I think the Rockets got Chandler Parsons in the 2nd round and that pick might actually be more of a fit for them.

Cincinatti BowtiesParticipantIf the fans voted, Jimmer would have been third overall. And Euopean players in the lottery would drop tremendously. I was frustrated with the Raptors pick, especially with Brandon Knight still on the board, but maybe Jonas will pan out.

HobbyOGParticipantNo if the fans voted, Jimmer would of went #1! He has the hugest following of any player in a long time that entered the draft. I read one article that he was working out and the gym was packed and then Kyrie came in and everyone left LOL…Fans mess up All-star voting so we def don’t need them to vote for the draft. Remember Iverson was voted a starter and he was avg like 14 pts a game LOL..

JoeWolf1I like Kwahi Leonard as a prospect, but a lot of his potential has to do with him adding an offensive skill set. Marcus Morris has a very well balanced skill set right now, including an NBA 3 point shot. Leonard could be a much better player if he reaches his potential, but if he doesn’t Marcus Morris is a more skilled player right now. Don’t sleep on the twins, they have great work ethics and just because they are more developed than many players now, doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement and if you watched them play at all as freshman you know these two guys aren’t afraid to put in the work.

DipoTimeParticipantfirs of all, i appreciate all the feedback. im new to making posts and voicing my opinions so its good to hear what u guys think about this. i do have to say that i am not sleeping on anybody. im not saying that any of the players that anybody picked are bad players or wont pan out. its all about value and team need. marcus morris is a very talented player who may prove me wrong and be a very well balanced 3 in the nba, but with chase budinger what they really needed was defense and rebounding and that is exactly what leonard brings to the table. he can help with that right away. i also somewhat disagree with the shane battier opinion. i feel that hayes does all the little things like hustling and defense and energy. however, i believe he would b best served coming off the bench playing the 4 and 5 kinda like haslem for miami. the problem with filling the battier void is that they need a wing defender and morris does not have the quickness to guard alot of 3’s in the league, more or less any 2’s. battier would get under kobe’s skin, he would even lock down carmelo at times. do you honestly believe marcus morris can do that? ever? imo i dont think he will ever be able to. maybe leonard wont either, but he at least hs the tools to be able to.
im really not sleeping on shumpert or harrellson either. alot of people think shumpert will b some lockdown defender for them, but he also brings solid handles and good vision as well. he was forced into taking shots and making plays at georgia tech because nobody else could. so maybe he will thrive in new york. like i said though, its all about value. if you can get shumpert even 5 spots later, why not trade down to get more with him? it happens all the time. sacramento traded 3 spots to get the player they wanted and they got other pieces that they believe will help them. and i actually agree with what your saying about harrellson. i loved watching him play at the end of the year and he is a big reason for not only kentucky’s success, but also brandon knights. how many times did he set a perfect screen for knight to get straight to the basket? how many times to he box out to rebound kights forced shots, only to put them back in? so yeah i think he can help them out. he brings to the table exactly what turiaf does, minus some athleticism of course lol.. it just goes back to value though. david lighty has so much more to offer and he doesnt get drafted but josh harrellson does? personally i would rather have lighty on my team than iman shumpert.. he is a proven winner, unlike shumpert. he can knock down open jumpers, unlike shumpert. shumpert plays the passing lanes and gets steals more through his length and athleticism than smart defense. lighty would lock people down with his aggressive defense.
you guys are most likely right about the draft though. the majority of fans would go after the names they know instead of the players their teams need. i just feel like alot of these teams make unnecessary reaches and take the BPA too often sometimes. like the cavs, i know they need talent all over the place, but your best players played the two spots that they drafted. why not take williams and valunciunas? or even irving and val or irving and vesely? maybe they will prove me wrong.. just gotta wait and see
