valentineCavs got #1 Irving and #4 Thompson, but would taking #1 Williams and #4 Knight been a better move for the Cavs?
Irving > Knight
Thompson < Williams
But as a tandom, I think Williams and Knight is a better than Irving and Thompson.

TRC1991ParticipantI would say the majority of the people out there felt that a combination of williams and knight would have been better than irving and thompson
btw, cleveland still has glaring holes at the 2 and 3 spot…smh at dan gilbert

colinjayaParticipantI think they should of took D-Will at number one and either Kemba or Knight at #4….Even packaging #4 for someone like Parker or Ellis if they were at all available…..Not too big on Thompson….they still need to get rid of Baron and Jamison if they wanna re-invent the franchise….right now Hickson/Thompson/Irving is the future of that team.

TallmanNYCParticipantA lot of people are down on Knight. It is a subtle stat, but his steals at 0.7 a game is aweful for a PG playing 35 minutes. To put that in perspective, Jimmer averaged double that number. Also you are talking about a 52% shooter versus a 42% shooter. That is kind of worlds apart. If Kyrie lives up to the stats he put up in before the toe injury, he is going to be much better than Knight.

surveParticipantthere are certainly better combos, but the bottom line is, the Cavs were taking Irving no matter what. I have to keep reiterating it for people who believe the hype. the only way Williams goes to Cleveland is if Irving is not in the draft. Its the same situation as Wall/Turner, only Wall wasnt injured and had less question marks than Irving and thats why the perception was that the top 2 picks were closer than they really were. So I dont see how they couldve worked it any better because the priority was to get Irving, not to pick a tandem, and in fact, I am sure they were trying to move that 4th pick but probably didnt get the deals they wanted. What they really wanted to happen was for Kanter to fall to 4.

PulseGlazerParticipantThe Cavs should have really worked out a way to move up 1 or 2 spots. That they failed to is to their detriment. I think Thompson will be very good, but if he wasn’t the ideal combo, in the situation to rebuild your franchise in one fell swoom, you have to move up.

mj23mj23besteverParticipantthey def should have taken williams at 1 then knight at 4 i so wanna root for the cavs too be good again but when they do stupid stuff like what they did in this draft its very hard too i can handle drafting irving at 1 even though they already have b diddy and sessions too play pg but takin thompson at 4 when they already have jj hickson at 4 makes no sense at all then with their first second rd pick they take yet another pf awful just flat out awful job by the cavs

ChrischiParticipantBig mistake by the Cavs imo.
Irving No.1 was fine. They should have traded that pick instead of wasting it.
But maybe we’re all wrong Tristan Thompson will be what Tyrus Thomas could have been.

juslistinParticipantThe cav’s should of really moved up in the draft if they wanted Irving that bad to try to grab him and Derrick Williams, the Timberwolves was not the right fit for Derrick Williams so I assume they were willing to trade down and grab another big man. Steal though in the second round by taking Justin Harper out of Richmond who can probably provide minutes and shooting ability and earn a spot in the rotation. Thompson has the bust factor, as he can turn out being a very good player or another wasted big who was a high draft pick, as I believe Harper is a solid pick who will be a everyday role player on anyone’s roster. Best option would of been to pick Derrick Williams and Brandon Knight or if they stuck with picking Irving find a way to dump one of their point guards, having 3 guys at that postion already with Davis, Sessions and Gibson.

ajcm7ParticipantThis move will continue the Cavs woes and the misery of Cleveland sports. They blew this. Should have taken Williams at 1 and Knight at 4. I think Irving could be great but he is injury prone and physically, he is no Derrick Rose or John Wall. I think he could end up being a poor-man’s Chris Paul which would be good, but I think Knight has almost as good a shot to be an upper-tier NBA PG as Irving does. Derrick Williams is the best player in this draft and could have brought LeBron-esque all-around capabilities to the court that they’ve been lacking.

Counting StarsParticipantThe Cavs aren’t likely to be able to draw a lot of big name free agents, so they really should have swung for the fences in the draft and tried to get players who could help their team.
Irving was the consensus #1, but Thompson plays the same position as Hickson and I’m not sure he’s ready to contribute right away. In the second round, there were plenty of guys who had a chance to contribute to this team but they basically threw both picks away by trading the first and drafting a guy who is unlikely to ever play in the US and plays the one position they’ve managed to stock with some legitimate talent.
