Memphis MadnessParticipantWhich contender are you most interested in tonight? The contending teams don’t have great picks but at least one of them will get a solid player in my opinion. In the first round I think that Chicago really needs some help at 28 and 30. With only one pick the Heat have to get a good player (spent all their money on 3 guys, a guy who can’t score, the untradable Mike Miller, and they will also have to pay up for Chalmers) since they need to use the draft now to add pieces.
The Grizzlies is my team who could use a good player. Supposedly we want a stretch four who can shoot. Greg Smith is getting love on the Grizzlies’ message board. Jon Leuer is being mentioned too. I think we have to get a guy that we can use as a deep bench player at worst. I don’t think we can afford to completely miss so we might try to play it safe a little bit.
The Mavs are pretty deep if they can resign everyone. They will be in contention next year and could repeat. So with their pick it will be between getting a guy who can help next year as opposed to getting a guy who can help in the future. If everyone comes back (including Caron Butler) they don’t really have any weaknesses so they might be better off just getting the best player on the board and hope that they at least are a decent 11th or 12th man who can give them a few good minutes this year.
OKC isn’t that deep and could use a third scorer. Singler would make sense, but I think they need some low post scoring too. The Thunder are another legit contender next year and could use a player who could help immediately as well as down the line.
LA, Spurs, and Celtics are still borderline contenders who have another year to make a run AT MOST. They might be better off using trades to improve but their are some pieces out there. If Boston drafts Jeremy Tyler and he does well next year then they could have another good year and be a top 3 team in the East. … The Lakers need solid value. They don’t have to hit home runs but they can’t totally whiff either. The Spurs need to get some youth. Supposedly then need a good young center, but I think they mostly need athleticism at the 3 and 3 spots. Duncan, Blair, and Splitter are good inside, but Richard Jefferson won’t cut it and McDyess is basically done.
Who needs this draft the most of these teams? I think the Bulls do. Followed by OKC, and then the Celtics. The Grizzlies could really help themselves if they get a guy who can add some depth to the team. I think that this draft is very important to the Heat, probably more than people think. The Heat aren’t going to get great draft picks now and this draft will be as deep as it gets. Their window is open but Wade is already 30 and LeBron has played a hard 8 years and might the oldest 26 year old NBA player ever. The Heat cannot afford to waste a draft pick with teams like the Bulls, Thunder, and Grizzlies getting better, the Lakers regrouping, and the Mavs back for one more run.

jonus grumbyParticipantare they proactive or reactive? I hope that IF they have someone targeted they make the move to get them. They will face a small fan backlash if they just sit back and take who falls to them. They will face a backlash if they sell one of their picks for $$.
Heat. I am afraid they will take Tyler and he turns into the stud some are predicting.
Lakers. I am afraid t-pups are as dumb as some are saying and trade Love + #2 for Gasol

doubledribblerParticipantEven though I’m on the idea of this being a weak draft, I think it’s going to be one of those drafts where a few of the players drafted later end up being huge steals. Now to my Bulls, I think they should look at Shelvin Mack and Jujuan Johnson. I think Mack is a great fit as a backup and Johnson can provide a mix of things that they don’t have. Even if he’s buried on the bench I think he could contribute in the future or becomes a backup plan if Gibson ever ends up getting traded or were to leave in free agency. The guy I wanted them to get was Marshon Brooks, but he’s likely out of reach for them.
As for other teams. I’m not sure the Celtics will get anyone that can help them this year, but I could be wrong. The Grizzlies will have some nice depth so I see them taking the best player available and that guy might not even crack their rotation. I think OKC would need to pick up scoring. Most of the teams I see finding depth or insurance in case of trades or injury. However I think that whoever Miami picks will be a guy that can step in and play from day one. They have their core signed and are in win now mode so I’m not sure they are in a position to take tons of risks to develop guys unless it concerns 2nd rounders.
