It seems like Jan Vesely is a lock to go to Washington, my only question is why. I get with his athleticism he’d fit in good with Wall, Young, McGee in a fast paced offense.

My only thing is the Wizards are horrible on defense and IMO a guy like Kawhi Leonard would be a perfect fit to bring rebounding, defense, and toughness.

It just seems to me Washington is more concerned about being an exciting team to watch then one that can actually defend and contend for a championship.

I don’t want Vesely. I think he has the highest bust-potential in this draft. He has no skills. He can’t shoot, dribble and is turnover-prone. I also heard that he’s not a very good defender, even though he has the potential to improve on that end.

I want the Wizards to trade up for Kanter, but if they don’t, they’ll probably choose Vesely 🙁

To be honest, I think the Wizards just need to trade the pick. I don’t like either guy for the Wizards. If they could pick up A couple of 1st rounders next year for that 6th pick and some cash, that would be great. If they end up having to pick there, I’d pick Vesely just because his potential is higher than Leonard’s. Although, I have a massive disdain for Kawhi Leonard, who I believe belongs anywhere between #25-#32, so I may be wrong.

It’s just that Washington has tons of offense so why bring in Vesely, they lack defense but want to draft Vesely, it doesn’t make sense.

It seems like Leonard is dropping so they could trade down to like #12 and still pick up Leonard.

I am jumping off a bridge if they pick Vesely. Having nightmere of Vesely trying to guard Lebron.

Worst case draft burks let Nick Young go.

^ that’s my point, the 3 guard in the NBA is the toughest position to guard and I don’t see Vesely handling that.

Most rookie’s can’t defend much anyways, defense is the hardest aspect of the pro game for most college players to adjust to.  Is Vesely going to get eating alive as a rookie by Lebron? yes, but everyone else in the draft not named Chris Singleton ( who would still get owned, but I think he is the player in this draft best suited to guard lebron) will too, Leonard isn’t very strong.  Vesely has defensive potential, down the line, I think he could be a Birdman type defender in a couple years.

It’s pretty un realistic to think the #6 pick as a rookie can guard the best player in the league.

Vesley can be hidden against non-offensive 4’s and, with Javale and a zone, could actually end up quite deadly.  We’ll know how good Jan can be quickly by how hard he tries on D, I think.

^ Im just saying in general Washington needs defense and not more offense. They were the worst defensive team in the league and I don’t see how a guy like Vesely will help.

I think they see his length as defensive potential, and his energy, length and athleticism will help them on the defensive glass, and altering shots from the get go.  PusleGlazer makes a good point about a potential zone with McGhee and Vesely, that is a very long lineup at the 4 and 5

Zone.  Mix it up. Don’t let teams get comfortable with your look.  Dallas lacks elite defenders too. Length can make up for a lot. Think of the solution, not the problem.

I’m not a fan of Vesely, but I’d take him over Leonard. He hustles just as much as Leonard, and is more athletic, so he has more potential.

Playing zone takes away the Wizards best asset, John Wall on the ball defense and full court pressure.

    Just say no to Vesely.

^ There are a million types od defense, if you’re that concerned about John Wall playing on the ball defense, roll with a box + 1.  Also, most teams don’t keep the same defensive set the whole game, they adjust and even teams that run a lot of zone, by NBA standards, still match up man to man for parts of the game.

Have you actually watch the Wizards play the past three years? For that matter that past ten?

Because that is how long it been since they play any sort of D. Currently they have an above average Point Guard on D. Nick Young is just horrible on D. At the 3 they had/have Josh Howard and Lewis who are ok on D but in no way above average. Blacthe at the 4 who is awful and McGee who can lead the league in block but gives up a ton of offense rebound and has the basketball IQ on a nat.

I am fully aware they you can and will change defense throughout the game. But in crunch time and you are down by two or three are you going to be sitting in a box and one or a zone to get the stop that you need?

Also they took Booker and Seraphin last year to play the 4.

And the final straw on why I do not like Vesely. A 47% FT shooter.

I agree with some of the pints you make. The Wizards are a terribnle defensive team in general, but zone is definitely not their strong-suit. I think we played worse defense everytime we switched to zone.

John Wall didn’t play great defense last year, even though he got better as the hyear went along. Nick Young isn’t horrible on D. He sometimes loses focus, but he’s a solid man-to-man defender. I think our biggest weakness on D is Andray Blatche. I’m one of his bigget fans, but he was out of shape all of last season, and he was allergic to rotations and weakside-D. He played lazy D.

McGee has all the potential in the world to be a great defender, but he’s not fundamentally sound. He still falls for too many pump-fakes (which usually gives up open shots or gets him in floul trouble), and gets lost too much. But he’s an elite shot-blocker and should get better in time.

Their best asset is Javale changing shots.  In a zone he’d be more in place to do so, especially since he makes mental mistakes in man.  As a mix and match and with different types of zone, this could play huge dividends, especially with Vesley and Wall’s speed closing out space on the perimeter.  This actually doesn’t seem so bad and might be Vesley’s best case (he’s a guy literally a half hour ago I thought had no role, but, well, this should work if his motor is as good as advertised).  Imagine this if they got Andre Kirilenko to share the 3/4 spot with Jan.  That’s quite a defense all of a sudden.

In crunch time Dallas often did just that. How’d that work out?

Vesley won’t be driving in crunch time. Duly noted.  Good thing they have that Wall guy.

If you aren’t big on Vesely, that’s fine.  We have a difference in opinion, but to say zones aren’t effective down the stretch of games just isn’t accurate.  But for a team really to buy into tough defense you need a system and a coach to impliment that, and I will say as long as Flip Saunders is their coach, that is not going to be their team identity.  That doesn’t mean their players don’t have the potential to at least be better defenders.

From what I understand, Blatche isn’t a big part of their future and Nick Young most likely isn’t. The reason why they drafted Serephin and Booker last year was because of toughness because they are trying to move away from that mentality.  I think the Wizards will look drastically different in a year or two and I think Vesely’s energy and athleticism can be a valuable asset to the Wizards going forward.

I agree with this. That’s why I don’t think Flip is the right coach for this team’s future. He doesn’t stress defense enough. He treated McGee with tough love (which I liked), but he didn’t treat Dray like that when he was playing lazy with no effort. We need a coach that will hold all his players accountable, and Flip is not that guy.

But John Wall says he loves the coaching staff and wants them top stay, so I’ll evaluate them closely this year to see if anything changes.

Exactly, Flip is a guy who can step in and coach a team of vets who know what they are doing, but I don’t feel he’s the teacher and defensive mind a team like Washington needs right now in their rebuilding process.
