…your team won an NBA Championship but you didn’t play a single minute because you weren’t good enough (a la Adam Morrison) or because you were injured (Caron Butler).

I, for one, wouldn’t be too satisfied.  Sure, I’d be very happy for my team but I wouldn’t feel the sense of self-satisfaction because I had little to nothing to do with the championship.

    How would you guys feel?

Atleast I’m not the only one that feels this way.  I just remember seeing Adam Morrison running around after they won and Caron Butler with the biggest smile on his face.  I wouldn’t be able to be that happy.

Yes of course you’d feel a bittersweet taste in the win…

… and what the mavs have to do with butler’s, chandler’s and baréa’s contracts…. ?

Is beaubois yet untouchable with baréa’s success ?

But there are some things you can just not help. The thing is, being a part of a team means that you in some way contribute. Adam Morrison helped players prepare in practice, and Caron Butler did the same thing before he got hurt. It has to be painful not to be a big part of it, or a part of it at all, I am sure you have people questioning you and making fun of you, Morrison, Darko, even guys who played spot minutes like Brian Cardinal are joked about on this forum often. However, all of these guys were part of that team and made their team better in some way. Maybe someone could easily come in and take there place, but you really have no idea, and sometimes it is just the luck of the draw. So, it sucks not to have technically contributed to them winning games, but these players, even in the tiniest way, made contributions. I am sure they feel some sense of satisfaction, even if people do not believe they should for not having played in games. Not saying they feel as much as those sweating the evening they win it, but they still played a part.

I guess I never thought about it that way.  I mean, I’m sure Caron gave advice to some of the players and I’m sure Adam Morrison helped guys prepare, one way or another.  Whether it’s something simple as getting some ice for the cold baths, giving teammates water and towels during a timeout, and other stuff like that.  I mean, it’s kind of lame to have to do things like that but I guess it’s better than nothing.

That’s what I was about to say, a lot of the time those type of players are the ones to stay late and rebound for the elite players on their team, they may not have helped with minutes on the floor, but in practise and encouragement off the bench they do play a factor in a teams sense.

Well for Caron, Butler you could argue that he helped them get al least a couple wins when he was healthy. They were 24-7 when he got hurt, without him, maybe they go 22-9, And thus, fall to fourth as far as seeding goes. The case with the Scalabrines and Morrisons, you have to bew a cheer leader. If Scalabrine doesn’t make himself the laughing stock of the league, he is out of the league, instead he is on a good and promising chicago team. Brian Cardianal is currently giving Scalabrine lessons.

Of course you contribute to the team in some ways, but to get the full satisfaction, you obviously want to be playing, there are players who may not play that make contributions off the court, but someone would be foolish to say they wouldn’t rather be playing and contributing on the court. Rick Carlisle won a ring with 1986 Celtics full of HOF players but he rarely played, especially in the playoffs, and he said he wanted the ring for the Mavs because he moreso contributed to that teams success then say the Celtics team with Bird, Mchale and Parish. When you are a major reason for when something successful happens, you are going to enjoy and honor it so much more.

I wonder how Peja feels? He played the first couple of games and then when they took him out they started winning.

If I was a scrub like Morrison I would be indifferent to the win.  But if I was Caron Butler I would be very excited for next season.

If I was injured it would be worse me then if I just sucked. But regardless I would feel pretty happy for my teammates.

They could always send their ring to LeBron!

Seriously though a championship team in any sport probably has reserves that hardly play and Caron Butler would surely have been in rotation but for injury. You could include the likes of Ian Mahimi who hardly saw any minutes for Dallas but he was still on the roster.

I think Morrison would actually be happier being on an NBA team right now and getting paid rather than having his two rings. Guess that is why someone like Robert Horry always said he would rather have had a career like Reggie Miller’s rather than one where he took home 7 rings.

Thats coming from my point of veiw though…as someone that doesnt have a chance at the NBA and whose bank account probably has never came close to that of even a NBA 12th man..

Im sure players that have been on the top of the world in high school/college for what they could do on the court..and then are sat on the bench/used for jokes for what they cant do on the court when they get to the NBA would have a completely different opinion and would much rather prove themselves as an atleast useful player instead of someone who was just along for the ride.

I guess its like when you go out with your friends and maybe your buddy pulls a girl and you dont…now you might still have fun…but at the end of the night you know he is getting it in…while your logging in..to livejasmin(NBADraft.nets most over used site when talking about por…videos of women doing things)

If you watch the interview, Adam Morrison turns quickly at the interviewer when he says "Well Adam, thank you for your time"  He gives him a look as if saying, "WTF?  Are you serious?!"

mikeyvthedon said literally everything I was going to say in his first post.

It kind of reminds me when I was a fresh in high school and playing varsity. I didn’t play a lot because I wasn’t good enough yet and our team was stacked, but I still helped. I still contributed. I busted my ass in practice and made other players better I feel. I was a part of the team… Encouraging my teammates, watching game film, shooting around with them, lifting weights with them, etc. I played spot minutes during the regular season and was ready to be called on when there was an injury, etc.

I didn’t play in the championship game, but I didn’t feel unsatisfied at all. I was happy I was just a part of it, while being hungry to play more of a role next season when I got my opportunity.

That is exactly what I was thinking when I wrote what I wrote. It feels great to be a part of any team you are a part of, and everyone plays a role. Heck, fans feel happy when their team wins, why would a player feel any other way? I get being possibly disappointed in being hurt or not playing a big role, but even if you are not playing, it has to be great being part of the winning team.
