Lotto StudParticipantNow that they are Champs, which direction do they go in to "upgrade" the team. Many of us project a PG/SG with their 1st round selection, but is that the route they should go with Kidd, Barea, Terry, Stevenson, Beaubois, Brewer, Jones there? They are loaded at the 1-2 spot. I think there best bet is to go PF, The Custodian is there only hope in last line of defense.

Memphis MadnessParticipantUmm, if they play Caron Butler at the small forward slot some, then they will have Shawn Marion, Dirk, and the Custodian to play the 4. The Mavs are REALLY, REALLY loaded, and their "last line of defense" put the smack down on Wade, drew a key charge against LeBron, and roughed up Bosh pretty good. He also had a nice assist, is rumored to have grabbed a rebound, and hit a 3 in each of the last two games. He was a real game changer at the 4 spot of the bench just as Nick Collison was against the Grizzlies and Udonis Haslem was against the Bulls.
They have 3 centers in Chandler, Haywood, and Mahinmi so they are full there.
I think they should just go out and get the best player available. They are deep at every position and will remain contenders as long as Dirk remains a high caliber player. Kidd is really old and getting older by the second but he could probably average 6 points, 6 assists, and 3 rebounds a game when he’s 45.
A good stretch four off the bench would help perhaps, like Justin Harper as a potential Shawn Marion replacement, or they could go after an explosive 2 guard with size (Barea, Beaubois, and Terry are small, and Butler/Stevenson aren’t that explosive as shooting guards), or an apprentice to Brian Cardinal who they can stick in the D League.
Do they need a rookie to contend next year? No. They will be slight favorites to win again next year even without a new guy to bring in given that Roddy and Caron Butler are coming back.
I could even see them getting a Euro guy and have him stay in Europe for another year or two.
Chandler, Butler, Barea, Stevenson, and Peja are all free agents so they are more interested in keeping some of their own guys. Chandler must be resigned. Same with Barea and Butler. I think they should look at resigning Stevenson and/or Peja or a cheaper replacement. The new CBA might lower the boom on the Mavs though. But, if they can resign everyone then the Mavs will be the favorites to repeat.
Free agency will be the biggest key to the Mavs offeason with the draft being a distant second. If I were them I would go after the guy with the most upside even if he has bust potential.

kaceyParticipantDallas is set at every spot if they resign Chandler, Barea, and Stevenson (I think he’s a FA this offseason). They need to draft a foreign kid and stash him overseas or trade the pick for a first round pick next year.
Nikola Mirotic would be a good pick late in the first round or the Bertans kid. Don’t know if any of them are planning on staying in this draft or not, but I would go in that direction.

Lotto StudParticipantThey really should consider trading up to get a legitimate 4 who brings offense along with defense……Dirk was really going on a slump early on & they had to really on other players who were not scoring from the paint……Dallas really needs a 4 who can be a scoring option in the paint. No plays are being ran through any of the Centers on that team.

khaled_a_dParticipantNo guard please,If we want a rookie guard next year then bring Calathes,he is better than any guard that is gonna be available @26
for me it is either pick a player with high potential and stash him at the D-League or overseas (like Bertans or Mirotic, may be Tyler but I am not a big fan ) or get a PF that we think he can crack the rotation and be Dirk’s back up
lots of Mavs fans speaks a lot about JaJuan Johnson, but I don’t know a lot about him
My wish is that we trade up to get either Motie (who will provide a needed front court scoring from the bench) or Faried(who will provide a needed rebounding) but this looks very unlikely0 - Posted on: Mon, 06/13/2011 - 12:43pm #544408
cward23ParticipantLets not forget that Dallas still has the rights to Nick Calathes who is playing well in one of the top leauges in the world (Greece)( 6’5 pg/sg)

Lotto StudParticipantI did not forget about Calathes I just did not mention him because they are going to keep him stashed for how long??????

iguapops420ParticipantI’ve switched around Bertans, Harper, and Mirotic with them. Also had Bebe more recently as a stashable big who could potentially/eventually learn from Tyson. If Vucevic falls I think they absolutely MUST take him. A true low post scoring threat is all the are lacking IMO. Dirk is more mid post/highpost.

cward23Participant^^ it wasn’t directed at anyone in particular. Chances are he won’t come over next season because of his 500,000, his 2 million per year tax free contract plus the team pays for his car and home.

Lotto StudParticipantI know you weren’t trying to come off, you were just voicing your opinion which is very understandable and agreeable.

natedogggParticipanti think they pick a euro guy with upside that wont come over for a year or two.

aamir543ParticipantJosh Selby if he falls to them. I dont think he falls past houston, can TOL23 tell us who he thinks Houston will pick? If Selby does fall, then I think they take him. Also a guy like Jeremy Tyler is an option. Plus Mirotic is a lottery talent, and if Dallas has to wait a year or two, so be it, he wouldn’t get much playing time in his first couple years as it stands with this stacked Mavs team.

Lotto StudParticipantWhy Selby? Hell why any Guard for the matter? Did you not see the depth chart above with the PG/SG spots not even including Calathes.
