valentineWhen the big 3 first got together last summer, I always felt they needed a big time coach that could handle their egos, esp. Lebron and Wade. I think Spoelstra isn’t ready for the Finals.
Should the Heat give Eric one more year to coach or fire him?
Personally, I would like to see a guy like Jerry Sloan come back to coach the Heat or Coach K after the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Thoughts?

BBall4life88ParticipantI think he deserves one more shot. He got them far and it’s not his fault his superstar had an all time bad Finals performance.

omphalosParticipantThere’s a pretty good coach in the Miami Heat organisation who fits that bill, maybe they should look up that guy, I think his name was Pat Riley?
But really, I think Riley should come down and coach them next season, even if just to get them over the hump where they actually win a championship and then let Spoelstra take over again. It’s a matter of confidence with Miami, once they get their first they will be hard to stop, but for now there are still too many unanswered questions for Spoelstra to get the job done.

mikeyvthedonParticipantBut, he could have used a better team around the three players who basically carried them the entire season. You need a team, and the Heat’s issues at Center proved to be huge, not to mention incredibly inconsistent PG play. I for one do not know why Spoelstra always felt that they needed a PG on the floor, but Mike Bibby got the Heat in more holes than the O-Zone layer with his lack of defense and inconsistent shooting. Was really surprised about that whole thing. I like Mario Chalmers, but you need more consistent play out of role guys to take that next step. If Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry did not have JJ Barea, Shawn Marion and Jason Kidd, they lose this series. The Heat hopefully will get players who are not a complete liability on one end of the floor (be it offense Anthony, and defense Mike Bibby), and I think Spoelstra should be given a chance to see how it goes.

ghrghrParticipantI know Miami hasn’t got the deepest roster, but you have to put some of the blame on Spoelstra. Dallas was able to protect the paint and Miami wasn’t able to solve the Mavs’ D.
Dallas, on the other hand, was able to score much more in the last 2 games, mostly due to their adjustments and some kind of mental breakdown from the Heat.
Spoelstra is a good coach, but he had never been in such a high pressure situation, maybe he learned from it and next year he becomes a better coach, but if I’m the Heat I’d be looking for a substitute, but only firing Spoelstra if there’s someone with titles or huge experience.

MuggsyParticipantSpoelstra is a joke, always grinning like a mischievous kid.

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantSo you’re going to fire a coach that advanced to the NBA Finals?
Makes sense.

nba00Participantheat fans always or maybe lebron fans always got something to blame come on i think he did a great job coaching based on what they did on the playoffs. It is once again lebron’s fault, he did not dominate like he used to. Dallas defense made me realize he is not as good as thought in breaking ankles, tmac is better 6’8 ankle breaker but lebron is better overall player.

PHILA9ParticipantWhy the hell would you fire a coach when he brought the Heat to the NBA Finals on their first year together?
0 - Posted on: Mon, 06/13/2011 - 5:24am #544077
Johnny ChillBecause it’s about winning championships, not just getting to championship games.
Plus, I dont give Spoelstra much credit to the Heat making it to the finals. Most of it goes to Lebron and Wade.
Also, when the Heat made it to the finals, Spoelstra failed to make the kind of adjustments both on offensive and defensive. Him putting Chalmers into the starting lineup came 1 game too late.
But most importantly, I dont think Lebron and Wade respect him as a coach. That alone can get a coach fired, see the Detroit Pistons, who didn’t even make the playoffs.

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantWade absolutely love Erik Spoelstra so I do not know why you put him in that phrase.
So you dislike the fact that the 2nd youngest coach in his THIRD year brought a team to the NBA Finals? Well, that makes sense.

IndianaBasketballParticipantLeBron and Coach Spo bumped heads earlier in the season, but they settled their differences. Wade has always had respect for him. I don’t think respect is an issue.
He made some mistakes this season and during the playoffs, but I thought he handled himself well. This was a circus and he had to deal with the biggest ego in NBA history. The defensive scheme he implemented was amazing and the players bought in. Offensively, when the Heat were moving the ball, they were unbeatable.
I say give Coach Spo a chance and let him grow. He’s young. I like what he represents… He’s worked his way up from the very bottom.

HitsterParticipantEric Spoelstra if he has D-Wade on side has a strong ally. I’d say he deserves another season at least as the Heat won their Conference and were very close to winning the NBA title outright. A lot will depend on how well they respond to this loss, it took Dallas several years in the play offs to get over that 2006 defeat to Miami.
I find it strange that so many other HOF coaches are mentioned when the Heat have Pat Riley in the front office, himself a HoF coach who is no older than several guys mentioned. Riley could easily have an experienced GM hired to the Front Office if he returned to the bench but I don’t think he’d want to return long term.

Johnny ChillHis age doesn’t make him, it is his lack of experience. Spoelstra made Rick Carlisle look like a coaching GOD.
Working his way up from the bottom is fine, but he’s coaching the wrong team with the wrong players. He should be coaching Toronto or Minnesota, teams with young unproven players that he can grow with. Not proven superstars like Lebron and Wade. At the championship level, there isn’t any room for rookie mistakes.
Here are some of the Championship coaches in the past decade, see where Spoelstra fits:
Jackson
Riley
Brown
Rivers
Popovich
now Carlisle.

Jlv2011it was Lebron’s fault.

Johnny ChillBut the Heat ain’t gonna trade Lebron….so the inexperience coach must go.

boxn1ParticipantHe is a good coach,he needs some help with offense, maybe an assistant that specializes in designing plays,or developing a better offensive attack. The Heat sucked in set offense most of the season.Their defense was championship worthy, their offense was offensive. But making it to the finals buys another 2 seasons. Atleast its what I would give him.

cward23ParticipantI have no problem with the Coach. He came up with some good game plans and i agree with what’s been said abou thow they usually ran great plays that worked out of the time out
