JoeWolf1The Boston Celtics have been in contact with a former Canadian offensive lineman recently taken in the CFL draft named Matt O’Donnell who measures up at an enormous 6’10” 340 lbs. Despite his great size he hasn’t played basketball since high school.
My question is, if the Celtics are so desperate for size that they are working out guys who haven’t played basketball in 4 years how could they not take Vucevic, Tyler or even Lucas Noguiera if the other two are off the board at #25?
Those are 3 upside heavy bigs that could be available to them, and even if they go for a 4 or a 2 guard then you’d think they’d almost have to go for a C at #55, Greg Smith might be there, Mike Tidsdale, anyone!. Hell, John Bryant would be a better option than a guy who doesn’t even play basketball. This comes accross as more desperate than a mad scientist move.

JunkYardDogParticipantvucevic would be a great fit… but you can not wait for something from tyler or nogeira right now… those are only prospects.
WAKE UP you’re living in a world playing basketball : there is a man called Ioannis BOUROUSIS playing center (6.11 good strength) at olympiacos in greece who could be available soon without battling through the draft process. You just have to put the money on the table and you’ll have a center with great BBIQ, 3 pts range, great D, and mental toughness.
He is the perfect fit.

RUDEBOY_ParticipantSometimes someone within an organization plays pickup basketball with different people and they can become impressed with how a certain guy plays..
And they tell their friends in the front office they should at less see what this guy has to offer..There have been several guys that played in high school, but didnt play in college but get talked into playing by an assistant or someone on the coaching staff…Guys like Ervin Johnson who was packing groceries,he got talked going to college and ended up in the pros…There’s a slight chance everyone will make it..
So dont put too much into this….
Celtics srewed up by involving Erden in that trade…He has some promise…

JoeWolf1I agree RUDEBOY, I liked Erden in FIBA play last summer and although I don’t know if he’ll ever be a starter, he’s got some good tools and for a team that needs size under 35 years old I too think they messed up by letting him go.

Memphis MadnessParticipantI think the Celtics need to give it one more run with the group they have and then rebuild. Rondo, KG, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce is a GREAT core. Big Baby and Jeff Green are solid support guys. Nenand Kristic can space the floor some but he can’t play 40 minutes a night. They need some help down low but they also need some guards off the bench. Maybe Daniels will help if he comes back. They are in WIN NOW mode so they need to draft a guy who can help right away. Shelvin Mack might be that guy (can score, hit 3’s, play some point).
If they want a guy who can play big minutes off the bench at center next year then they need to look at signing Jeff Foster. He’s a tough player and a great rebounder which is basically what the Celtics need up front. I would sign him, go after James Jones (can hit 3’s, is young, and he is familiar with the Heat), and draft Shelvin Mack. With those 3 additions plus the Big Four, Kristic at center, plus Green and Big Baby as the primary reserves the Celtics would be 10 deep with depth at every position. That team can get back to the Eastern Conference Finals with a real shot at getting back to the NBA Finals. … then they phase out the old Big Three and build around Rondo, Davis, Green, Shelvin Mack, Kristic, and James Jones. Avery Bradley might also be a great building block. If they need more frontcourt depth they can bring in Josh Harrelson as a free agent.

providencefriars1ParticipantThey could take a chance on Dunigan or the kid from Chaminade too with #55. I think Dunigan is more of a 4 but he is pretty big and that kid from Chaminade measures at like 6’11”

Pro 1ParticipantI want the Celtics to go after UFA center Sam Dalembert. He’s exactly what they need in my mind.

BasterdInABasketParticipantIts worth taking a look at him… couple years ago the Packers worked out Paulus right after his senior season. Obviously nothing happened with that but it doesnt hurt to look at a guy with that size.

HitsterParticipantLosing Perkins was a blow but there are veteran FA C’s out there and they still have JO, KG, Big Baby and Kristic if he resigns in their frontcourt.
I do wonder if Danny Ainge might get a bit creative in a trade if you remember Keith Van Horn was included in the Jason Kidd trade and the Lakers sent Aaron McKie to Memphis as part of the Pau Gasol trade when he was almost retired. The Celtics still have Sheed and Shaq on their books and with JO’s expiring 2012 deal they have a nice makeweight of contracts. Send the $3 million permitted the other way as well to help with any nominal buyouts for Shaq and Sheed and if a JO buyout is needed and throw in a few assets and you have the start of a deal to get a top level player in.
