Recent reports state the Timberwolves are in discussion with the Toronto Raptors regarding a deal which would send Jonny Flynn and the number two pick to Toronto for guard DeMar DeRozan and the number five selection. While the Timberwolves should continue their due diligence to see if they are able to get more from their assets than only DeRozan, if this is the best they can do, they should think long and hard about it.

DeRozan is a much better player than Flynn.  Also clears a log jam at PG for Minny.   I think it’s a good trade.  Not sure what Derozan’s contract situation is though.

Toronto should look to get more for their assets than Jonny Flynn

The deal makes some sense. In my opinion, DeRozan is better and has more potential than Flynn. I just don’t know who they would target at #5. It’s a great trade for the Raptors. They get the face of their franchise player in Williams (or Irving) and can hope Calderon or Flynn develop into the PG of the future, while the other is a decent backup right now.

I like this deal. Flynn isn’t right for the Wolves, I wanted Kahn to take DeRozan (or Curry) with the non-Rubio pick a few years back. Plus, the Wolves can still get good value with the 5th pick.

Anyone think they might be targeting Enes Kanter?  If Bargs is possibly on his way out this might be a good deal.

I like the idea of the Raptors moving up to get Kanter at 2 but why are they offering Derozan? Did they not say that they were going to build the team around Derozan an Davis? And this is why Bargnani was put on the trade block. Fine way to show Derozan that you’re building around him. I really think the Raptors need to think twice about this and really think if this is in their best interests. I’d try to get Beasley instead of Flynn.

Swapping Derozan for Flynn just to move 3 spots in the draft? that’s lunacy. Derozan along with Ed Davis are the cornerstones of the Raptors franchise. Flynn isn’t even better than Jerryd Bayless who they already have along with Calderon. The dumbest part of it all is the guys the Raptors are likely targeting, Kanter, Jonas, and Vesely, one will definitely be there at #5, so essentially they could be taking a guy at #2 that they might have had at #5, all while giving away their best young player for a guy who won’t even crack the rotation.

    Minny Starting 5: Rubio?,Derozan, W Johnson, Love, 5th pick/ Darko

Toronto Starting 5: Calderon,Barbosa,J Johnson, Williams, Bargnani

Deal seems fair to me, it’s just a matter of contracts now. But i definately have Minny winning this deal just because they would have a young core of guys that have huge potential (besides Darko), although he did have a better season last year than any other year. Toronto should ask for more than just Flynn & the pick. Overall, a good trade though.

I think if Toronto was to move Derozan to Minn. they would want Johnson in return to take his place, Derozan is better than Johnson at this point in there careers but Johnson does have potential and is youing.

The raptors have to pay a premium to trade up in the draft because of the steep drop off in talent and because Williams is going to be in high demand

I don’t even see why the Raptors want Williams so bad especially if it means trading Derozan. To me Williams would just be a luxury pick but not a necessity. Ed Davis is the  PF of the future. Then you have Bargnani and Amir Johnson as those stretch big men and at SF have Kleiza and James Johnson who if you remember the Raptors gave up a first rounder for him just last year. For a team starting Bargnani at center and needing an upgrade at PG trading up for Williams makes no sense unless it involves picks only.

"First lets get one thing clear, a deal for the number two overall pick will not include DeMar DeRozan."…. "Any deal would likely include the fifth overall pick, Andrea Bargnani and/or Jose Calderon and cash."

Just putting this out there I saw this trade and it seems pretty fair:

    TO MINNESOTA:
    – Calderon (to mentor Rubio and give Minny veteran leadership on the floor)
    – Barbosa (they have no SG and he would also be another veteran that Kahn wants)
    – #5 pick (from Toronto)

    TO INDIANA:
    – Ridnour (PG/salary dump for Minny, would be veteran PG for Indy to pair with Collison)
    – Ellington (end of bench player from Minny, purely for salary-matching reasons)

    TO TORONTO:
    – Flynn (PG dump for Minny, would give Bayless good young competition for PG time in TO)
    – Webster (salary-matching from Minny, more decent young wing depth for Toronto)
    – Posey (salary dump from Indy, either bought-out or traded by Toronto)
    – cash from Indy to help facilitate buy-out of Posey
    – #2 pick (from Minny)
    – #45 pick (from Indy)

So let me get this straight, Minny takes on Calderons ugly contract and Brabosas bloated contract and trades away the #2 pick, and that seems fair to you? Yes, everyone could tell that you are a Raptor fans without even seeing your avatar.

I don’t think the Raps would do this trade… now if it was DeRozan for the 2nd pick… I could see it happening. That would give the Raps the 2nd and 5th picks in the draft.

They take Calderon to mentor Rubio and recieve Barbosa to fill a hole at the 2…  And they do this while offloading Flynn is considered a bust by many, and still keeping a relatively high pick at 5.

Sorry bruh that trade for Minny is absolutely horrendous. Minny trades two young solid SG’s in Webster and Ellington, trade a solid backup PG in Ridnour, and drop 3 spots in the draft all for an awful contract in Calderon and an expiring in Barbosa. If they really want Calderon that bad to mentor Rubio a simple swap of a few players already on roster would suffice.

    @bksmith

I agree this trade isn’t done but this shows groundwork. Btw Barbosa currently doesn’t have a contract he’s a free agent.

TO may have to put more into it, but giving up Flynn & the 2nd pick isn’t going to get you a Superstar, like I said before throwing Bargnani into the mix with added assets from both teams could be more intriguing.

If the raptors traded away derozan for the 2 pick and jonny flynn who is arguably worse than both calderon and bayless i would no longer be a raptors fan. Demar has more potential in my opinion than derrick williams since hes not a tweener and haas already proved he can put up huge numbers. 36, 37 point games already in his short career.

I would trade calderon, bargnani and 5th pick for 2nd pick and whoever you want to involve in that trade. Anyone but derozan, hes the future of Toronto.

when did d. williams become a special player???  to me d williams is the "good looking friend" in a ugly crew after a few drinks…  we know what DeRozan can do in the league and u dont trade away a potential all star caliber SG for a D. West/M. Beasley type player…  Colangelo is alot of things but a retard he isn’t…. sorry to disappoint all twolves fans out there but is a deal is done with Tor. its going to involve Bargarnani/calderon/5th pick

if Colangelo did lose his mind the only way i see him moving DeRozan would be on a draft day deal and it would be b/c the cavs pasted on k irving besides that no way raps move DeRozan to get d williams

I’m a Raptors fan. I like DeRozan. I was thrilled when we picked him, as I thought he and Brandon Jennings were the only smart picks at that point.

However, I think most of you guys are overrating Derozan. What has he done besides score points? He’s pretty efficient in scoring so far, but he doesn’t show any of the other skills needed to get to the all star level. Scoring is the most abundant resource in the nba. Pretty much every team in the league has a Jamal Crawford type guy who can score.

Derrick Williams is a complete prospect. He has similar offensive potential to Derozan. If we look at Derozan’s scoring ability, it stems from mid range shooting and penetration. Williams has potentially a better jumper, plus he has rebounding, post skills, and well defined leadership skills that Derozan simply has not revealed yet.

I am not saying that DeRozan won’t develop these abilities, but I think Williams is the higher probability bet here. Irving also seems to be a much better prospect.

I like this trade for the raptors.

If I was raptors GM, I’d be calling the Bucks about Brandon Jennings as well.

I don’t really like these trade scenarios and when they start involving Bargnani it seems pointless as an offence based C who doesn’t rebound is not what the T-Wolves want.

One trade I could see is maybe moving Darko to give the Raptors the size they need at 5 and allow Bargs to play his more natural 4 with Davis and Johnson playing around them.

     @Hitster

Who says the Wolves get Bargnani?

The Pacers need a scoring PF, and they definitely have some assets that could interest both TO & Minny.

after that 3 team deal that was stated earlier i think the line ups would look like this:

    TOR- Irving*(Flynn), DeRozan(Bayless), J.Johnson(Webster), Davis(Posey), Bargnani(A.Johnson)

    IND- Collison(Ridnour), Rush(Ellington), Granger(George), Hansborough(McRoberts), Hibbert(Morris*)

    MIN- Rubio(Calderon), Barbosa(Honeycutt*), Beasley(W.Johnson), Love(Randolph), Milicic(Valancuinas*)

    * means they are draft picks that i think they would pick that would still be around when the team is picking (p.s.- i have cleveland drafting williams first over all)

    – these rosters are also without signing free agents, so there is a chance these lineups get better.

I don’t think any team really drops off to much talent wise from the year before and all look like they have a good future.
