MagikKnickParticipantA source familiar with the situation said Thursday that Portland figures it must deal with Brandon Roy’s future if it’s truly going to rejoin the league’s contenders. Retirement for Roy is among the options they’re considering.
The Blazers know they hold the distinction of being the only team in the Western Conference that hasn’t won a first-round playoff series in the past 10 years. So they’re eager and acting with urgency.
There are only three viable options when it comes to Roy’s future: A) figure out where he fits and play him; B) set him free with the Amnesty Clause; or C) lure him into retirement.

mikeyvthedonParticipantI have no idea if it is true or how to feel. All I know is that if Brandon Roy continues to play basketball, he will be doing so by causing himself a lot of pain and at a level very much below where he was. This is really ugly, his injury will always be reoccuring and I do not see any way he can play regularly without missing huge chunks of time. Either way, Brandon Roy will never be the same, but to ask someone who still very much wants to play in any capacity possible to retire is plain wrong. Really hope something can be worked out, but Paul Allen better pay Roy whatever money was coming to him. He knew what was going on when he signed him to the extension, and this guy played his heart out for his team. Horribly ugly situation.
For those who want to know more about the injury, and why it is not as simple as Roy "becoming more like Grant Hill", here is a good article:

Lotto StudParticipantCould Phoenix medical staff revive his career like, Amare` & Hill?

TyroberParticipantWell it would certainly look better for the Blazers if Roy retired instead of them cutting him with the Amnesty clause.

6-6-6-lolParticipantCan you elaborate on the Amnesty Clause? It’s pending alongside the lockout right? I think it’s a good rule though (not in the case of Roy but guys like Eddy Curry).
It’s an unfortunate situation considering that Roy is only 26 years old but there’s a lot of money on the line. I wonder what the buyout would be. If there’s $68,000,000 left I think a buyout of about $22,000,000 is fair. I still think Roy will try to play, who knows, if there’s a lockout he may be in better shape come 2012.

6-6-6-lolParticipantMemphis, Amare had microfracture surgery done by a private doctor I think in Colorado. He’s not part of the Phoenix staff. In the case of Grant Hill I do think a lot of credit goes their trainers.
Roy’s case is very serious and I doubt any training staff can revive his knees. Even so, it’s in the matter of private specialists and not team doctors. I’m sure he’s doing his own consultations with the best in the business. If they can’t help, it’s unfortuantely game over for him. I’m suspicious how long they can even prolong his knees.

Memphis MadnessParticipantThat’s pretty sad.
Brandon Roy might retire, but I think Oden will still play. The irony being that the Thunder could really use Greg Oden as a shot blocker/rebounder off the bench.

I NO NOTHINGParticipantbulls are looking for a 2guard he can hit open shots.

HaleParticipantMaybe he should retire, try surgery to replace his meniscus (I think there is one, but not positive) and then he could come back. If he continues to play now, he will barely be able to walk in a few years.

Bnix13ParticipantThe surgery you’re refering to does exist but recovery wise there is no research on if someone can return to high impact sports and it’s contraindicated for high impact activities in general. Meniscal replacement was discussed last year for Roy but the other downside to it is the return to any type of activity such as running is 1-2 years which means his contract would be almost over if he could return to playing after having the surgery at this point and may not be able to return post surgery.

JNixonParticipantIsn’t this incredibly sad? The guy was a top-15 player entering his prime and he is so hurt that retirement is being brought up? I feel bad for the guy.

IndianaBasketballParticipantThe Blazers are a trip.
They’re the stupid people who made the decision to sign him to a max deal despite knowing about his knees. I mean, what did they expect? A basketball player can’t run, jump, pivot or cut without cushioning in his knees. Roy is bone on bone (tibia on fibia) and they knew this… There’s no medical procedure that can save Roy’s career.
This is one bonehead and wierd organization.

bkb77ParticipantIts a shame. This is looking very similar to what happend with "The Boston Strangler" Anthony Toney back in the day with the sixers. Dont know whats gonna happen but its not looking good right now.

Ghost01ParticipantPortland is preying for the Amnesty thing. Easiest way to get rid of him.
I know the fans love him, but its just good business getting him and Oden out of the organization and moving on. They have talent in place.

Scottoant93ParticipantAnyone remember Darius Miles, and Blazers threatning to sue any team that would sign him, Letting KP go because he got too much attention for what a great job he did, letting Cho go because he didnt do a good enough job, now asking roy to maybe retire sad day in basketball, Maybe the jail blazers are on there way back since all the good guys are being treated like shiitt.
