In regards to Derrick Rose, can you win a championship with a score first PG? In recent years it doesn’t happen very often. I know his supporting cast isn’t very good and with better players he might pass more, but just in general it seems more teams win champiosnhips with pass first PG’s then score first PG’s.

I mean, Tony Parker won a few rings, and I think Chauncey Billups is probably considered more of a scorer than a passer. You really need the right pieces, which each player had. It is a team game, single players do not always carry teams to titles, but if you get the right pieces around a Derrick Rose, Chris Paul or Deron Williams, I am sure championships would follow. It has not happened too often, but I am not sure you can say no to such a question. Usually championships are more about defense and rebounding than who scores the most points for your team. But, Tony Parker was definitely a score first PG when the Spurs beat the Cavs in 2007.

John Stockton, Jason Kidd, Steve Nash were great passers that never won a ring.  Its a team game and its very difficult to win a championship.  Rose will win one if he gets the right pieces around him.

On another note did anyone else here Scottie Pippen call Lebron the greatest player ever on Mike and Mike

Billups and Parker also had great teammates which I guess validates the point that Rose needs better teammates. I feel pass first PG’s can win championships with slightly less talent around them than score first PG’s.

He probably said that Lebron was better than Jordan because he saw him dominate and hitting everything in this game.

Yes, of course but it depends on who they have to go through to do it…but I want to ask you…do you mean if the score 1st PG is the best player or a player heavily relied upon to score?  Or do you mean if the PG is not a natural at the position and is a shoot-first PG who has adjusted his game to win?  An example of the latter would be Ron Harper.  An example of the former would be Allen Iverson…who couldve done it had the Sixers not faced a team as good as the Lakers.

Pippen said Jordan was a better scorer but Lebron is a better player

I think it comes down to situation, as a PG you need to know when you have to score and when you have to get your team involved. Right now IMO Rose does not know how to change his game to the situation, maybe he will eventually.

In general your just need one guy that makes the people around him better. Jordon’s bulls never ran the offence through the PG. It went through Pippen and Jordon. With the spurs most trips down the floor started with a pass into Duncan. If the guy running you offence only is thinking about "how can I score" you won’t get very far.

^ which is why the Bulls are in trouble. They have so much money locked up in Rose, Noah, Boozer, Deng I don’t see how they can get a scorer

You can win with a score first PG, but I think a pass-first PG would create a better chance of a winning team.

Basketball is a team sport, some super stars can win games single-handedly like Derrick Rose, but when it comes to winning a championship, you need a team.  You need at least an 8-man rotation with good team works and chemistry to win championship.

Why most people would prefer a pass-first PG?  Because the PGs are usually the ball handler, if he tries to score too much on his own, 2 things would happen:

    1) teammates become reliant on him to score and start standing and watching on offense waiting for him to score

    2) teammates would be unhappy about getting touches on offense (scoring is the best way to put up stats and make money in free agency)

If the PG tries to score too much and ignores his teammates, it can create serious chemistry problems especially if other team members are in contract year looking to put up good stats, they would be really annoyed for not getting the ball enough.

Most teams that had a score first PG and won championship would have a ball dominant SG that can also handle and pass.  The ball handling duty is shared between the PG and the SG so both can run the offense, which still create a good environment for team basketball.

Derek Fisher / Kobe Bryant, Tony Parker / Manu Ginobili, Ron Harper / Michael Jordan / Scottie Pippen, etc.

A pass-first PG like Jason Kidd, Steve Nash, and Rajon Rondo allows team to be good without a 2ndary ball handler, but in order to win championship, a 2ndary ball handler is also important.

The Bulls is seriously lack in a 2nd ball handler that can also pass (not necessary run a team) and create his own shots.  I guess that’s why a lot of Bulls fans would like to see a guy like Joe Johnson to be on the Bulls as Joe Johnson is one of the best passing SG in the league.

thyere have only been 2 PGs in the last 30 years that have led their team in scoring…Isiah Thomas and Magic, and they did that by a close margin. –

Rose isn’t score first by nature, he is score first by virtue of being on the floor with guys like Noah, Gibson, Brewer, Bogans, and Asik.

Actually we do. When the Bulls were going with Rose, Gordon, Hinrich, and Salmons down the stretch in 2009, there was no one questioning Rose’s willingness to share the ball.

     EXAMPLES:

    1) Chauncey Billups with Detriot

    2) Tony Parker: Spurs, the year he won the finals MVP

    3) Isiah Thomas: Detriot, career averages of 9assists per game…but about 20ppg too

    4)Gus Williams: supersonics

Yes, its possible… I agree with Charles Barkley…U need a crazzy guy, a go to scorer, and you need an athletic guy

Its not even a question…the reason the Bulls lost had nothing to do with Rose being a scoring PG…it had to do with Rose having no scorers around him. Lebron and Wade are Miami’s primary ballhandlers, whethere they are PGs or not. Scottie and Jordan were Chicago’s primary ballhanders as well. The Bulls problem is not having any other scorers that can create. Its that simple. Also, they dont have a knock down shooter. 3s arent Deng’s forte and Korver was horrible in the playoffs.

BJ Armstrong, Tony PArker, Chauncey Billups, Derek Fisher. Seems they do a pretty decent job of winning IMO.

The Bulls loss had more to do with lacking of a 2nd ball handler and creator.

The only guy who can consistently create his own shot and for others is Derrick Rose.  The Bulls need another guy that can do that to help share the ball handling duty.

Compare to Russell Westbrook, Derrick Rose is lightyears ahead in terms of passing and running a team.

Derek Fisher isnt a scoring guard, hes a PG who is a 3pt specialist
