Did not expect this to happen. He was their coach for only a year, so he didn’t have much time to work with the team and improve their record. This also makes it difficult to deterimine if this was a smart decision or a bad decision. What do you guys think? Should the Warriors have let Keith Smart go?

Also who will replace Smart as the Warriors head coach?

I remember Charlotte doing the same thing with Sam Vincent ( or was it Phil Ford?) an  it really sets a franchise back because now you have to teach a new system. I think Golden State needs to go defensive ( Mike Brown) and trade either Monta Ellis or Steph Curry ( my vote Ellis) and move on.

Word has it they didnt want him to be the coach from the start..He got it becuz they didnt want to bring in someone outside of the organization during the season….

Curry must love this, becuz he had a problem with Smart’s way of doing things….

It was rumored since about mid-season that Keith Smart might be let go. Word was that he was not at all on the same page with Stephen Curry, who I believe they are looking to build around. I do not think he and Stephen had a riff, but Stephen’s minutes were incredibly inconsistent and down from last year. It may not be inexplicable, as Stephen’s defensive struggles are documented, but the guy also shoots 48-44-93, I do not think he is the entire problem for that team.

I think Golden State needs to strike while the iron is hot on Monta Ellis. He has been putting up fantastic numbers and is a very fun player to watch, also sure the fans would hate to see him go. But, Stephen is the star in that duo, in my mind he is a flat out better player, his court vision and shooting trump Monta’s athleticism and speed. How much longer will Monta Ellis last relying on those things anyway? Monta was right, you can not win with them both in the backcourt, but Stephen should be the guy they keep.

Stephen actually improved in almost every statistical area this season, in fewer minutes per game than last year. What Golden State needs to do is look for some nice perimeter defenders, which they have been lacking, and some stronger, rugged bigs down low. They have been going crazy on skinny bigs (Brandan Wright, Anthony Randolph and Ekpe Udoh last year), and none have worked out for them. Not to mention, adding David Lee was an added gamble in improving a team struggling on defense. At least Lee boards, but he was in a different world against the PF’s of the West.

I have never been a huge Rick Adelman guy, but he could be a pretty nice pick-up for them. Definitely would bring more of a defensive focus, but the odds are that they need a coach willing to run, as that is what the team is built for. So, I really have no candidate, and as of right now it would have to be a coach with a vision for spreading the court and outrunning whoever they are playing. Keith Smart obviously did not instill much of a defensive game plan for them, and I think he let Monta have a little too much control of the offense. Dorrell Wright was a pleasant surprise, but in my mind, their are better wing guys out there. They lack a toughness they had when they had the likes of Mikeal Pietrus, Matt Barnes, Baron Davis and Stephen Jackson. Regardless of whom they build around, they need to try and regain that at the wing positions, and they should address their Center position, in which Biedrins has been injury prone and has not been able to cut the mustard of late.

Keith Smart did a wonderful job in Golden State, he should get consideration for many of the available positions this offseason. I would absolutely love to see him in Sacramento, they need a new Coach.

The Warriors can have Mike D’antoni, and we’ll take Keith Smart. I think he did a wonderful job coaching Golden State. Obviously you have to keep your foundation player happy, but I think they should have worked something out. I mean the Warriors went from giving up 112 points to 105 points, while still bad their is room for even more improvement. They also had a 10 game improvement in the W column. I am not sure if he would have been able to take them to the playoffs next season, but I don’t see any coach doing that for the Warriors next season.

I agree with Mikey that Rick Adelman would be a good choice, but the players might not like his defensive style.

He had a weird relationship with Curry, not  hate but defintately a distain. His rotations SUCK and his offense is sort of jumbled and worst of all he is stubborn. The reason why he was the coach was cause we wanted Nellie out fast but it was right beofre camp so there was no better option. Hes a solid coach with potential who gets in his own way.

It was expected he was going to be fired, rumor is Lacob (new owner) want Mike Budenholzer or Brian Shaw to be the next coach

You guys keep saying Smart did a wonderful job. He did not. His rotations were absolutely awful; he decided to play Acie Law and Vladimir Radmanovic over Ekpe Udoh and Reggie Williams. The fact that he had more wins this season is more because key players are healthy than anything else. I’m very glad he’s gone.

The reason why we ‘improved’ defensively is more because we slowed the pace of the game and gave up our offense than because of any work on his part. I would prefer Adelman, Van Gundy, or Budenholzer…

Everybody’s been pointing to John Kuester as the next coach to be taken off the job instead guys like Rick Adelman and Keith Smart were the first people to get the pink slip…wow…Joe Dumars, I hope you know what you are doing man…

John Kuester’s time will come. I expect him to be fired soon, same with the Kings coach, Flip Saunders, and the Wolves coach. The most suprising of these cancellations has definitely been Rick Adelman. I wasn’t too surprised with the Warriors letting Keith Smart go just thought it wasn’t expected since he wasn’t doing horrible and he really didn’t have to much time to affect a change, but I guess a few people saw this coming.
