So what do yall think will happen to Brandon Roy?He finished the season (through all the injuries) averaging 12 points a game the lowest for his career. 8.0 a game coming of the bench. 10 a game during the playoffs right now. Do yall think he could still go back to his days of being a star? Get back to his former self? Or will he become like penny hardaway, just dissappear making us all just wonder what could have happened to his career or will he be like Grant hill become a solid starter for the rest of his career. Opinions?

I think what makes a star a star is the fact he can do great things consistently over the course of an 82 game season, plus the playoffs. Based on that, Roy will never be a star again.

However, just like game four, there will be games where he just goes HAM. His body just won’t allow him to do it consistently though.

How his career will turn out from here on out just depends on how Portland uses him, how Roy takes care of his body and just his pain tolerance. He’s going to have to be like Grant Hill and start seeking out new ways to preserve his body and get the max out of what he has left.

The man has zero Meniscus in either knee. That means he has no cushioning. He’s bone on bone. Imagine the grinding. And once Meniscus is gone, it’s gone. You can’t replace it. He’d be blessed to last another two years. I couldn’t even imagine the amount of pain medication he’ll have to take to continue his career, which could have dangerous affects on his liver and kidneys.

Too early to say, Grant Hill had 6 years of injury hell untl he became sound again and Roy has had his injury earlier in his career than Grant did. I think that Portland need to look at the stuation and figure out how to get the best out of Roy over the next few years without damaging his long term health. It might be that he doesn’t practice very much or only plays a certain amount of minutes per game, doesn’t play every back to back game etc.

One option could be that he becomes more a point player and uses his skillset to become more a playmaker and thus control his own tempo and as a distributor he would not need to put such a strain on his knees as he would when driving to the basket etc. Guys can reinvent themselves during their career and several have done it at a much later stage than Roy, he effectively plays within his limitations and develops other aspects of his game going forward.

Yea, but Grant didn’t have bone to bone. Hill had like ankle injuries and such if I’m not mistaken

A man with no meniscus in either knee would have trouble working a job that requires him to stand on his feet and walk for long periods of time. Imagine trying to play NBA basketball versus the best athletes in the world. I had just a small piece of my medial meniscus torn and the sharp pain I felt when I planted was a bitch to deal with.

People say he can re-invent his game, but he’ll be putting strain on his knees just by running up and down the floor, pivoting, cutting, etc. He’s really in a tough situation and it’ll defeat him eventually.

I have known guys with similar injuries in sports like football (soccer) here in the UK who have prolonged their careers by not training or playing only a set amount of games but the time period between games is more than NBA games. Also the travel schedule that teams undertake and the size of the players being on the road or on flights must surely not help ongoing niggles regardless of what luxury they may travel in.

People keep comparing the situations of both of these players, and I think it is radically different. Their situations may have been slightly similar, star players who suffer injuries that mean they have to take on a different role. But, as it has been stated, Grant Hill did not have the bone on bone situation in his knee and that is what is happening with Brandon Roy.

The difference is also that Brandon Roy was a half court player who the offense was centered around, he was not exactly the point forward that Hill was. He was not as versatile as Grant as far as ball handling and passing was concerned, but he was more versatile in his offensive arsenal and a better shooter. Still, the ultimate separation between the two, one which has made Grant the successful role player he is, would be their activity on the defensive end. Grant was, and still is, a very solid defender, and Roy really never was great at that aspect of the game, even when he was at full health.

I am incredibly happy to see him do well these past two games, and it honestly seemed like he was going to be the leader of one of the NBA’s best young franchises. But, unfortunately, I do not think this will be a lasting situation, and Blazers fans have to enjoy it while they can. As has been said, you can not bring back meniscus, and while Brandon still has his skills and mind, he is a major liability defensively. As sad as it is, when someone has a weakness, it gets exposed, and for Brandon, the more he plays in the game, the more you would probably see people go at him.

Indiana, I realize I should have said he should not get many more minutes than he has already been getting as opposed to more minutes. The cap should be 24-30, and I think playing him at the end of games when things get tighter is a perfect situation for him. As a half court offensive player, Roy still has an incredibly dangerous arsenal, which was displayed in full effect in Game 4. Still, if Brandon went back to playing heavy minutes, it would be a very dangerous situation. It is almost as if you need to hope to keep the game close and have Brandon ready for the 4th. As amazing as his performance was, coming back from that sort of deficit will be incredibly difficult in the upcoming games.

I really have no idea what the Blazers plan to do with regards to Brandon’s future. My thoughts are, he will more than likely become at best a 24 minute per game guy and again, one you could possibly use in clutch situations. Though people love to compare this situation to "Grant Hill’s reinvention", it seems like the injuries are different, not to mention that Brandon will never be the defensive presence that Grant is. So, unfortunately, I figure that Brandon’s role will be as someone you maybe bring off the bench to score some points, probably playing about 20 minutes per game. The Blazers are lucky enough to have a viable replacement in Wesley Matthews, who plays solid defense. He will more than likely never be an All-Star like Brandon was, however. Also, Rudy Fernandez seemed like a star in the making, and could possibly team with Brandon at times to provide a couple of dangerous scorers. I hate to be negative, but I feel like Brandon Roy will never reinvent himself the way Grant Hill did, and will struggle to have a much longer NBA career, much less become close to what he was before this season.

Any Blazer fan who watched that game got a season’s worth of sports enjoyment. That was as good as it gets. And if Brandon doesn’t play another season again, much less become a star, well last night was still better than anything he has ever done or could do short of delivering a Championship. I doubt he will ever enjoy a win more than that nor will the fans unless we are talking about a Championship. So in some ways this was enough and let’s not speculate about how the knees are going to be next season. Let’s just see if they can hold out for two or three more games against Dallas.
